    Osipova and Hallberg were wonderful

by Milusia on 3/26/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This is one of my favorite ballets, and it was done beautifully. Osipova was perfect as Giselle and the pas de deux in Scene II was ethereal and amazing to watch. Hallberg was delightful as Albrecht. I am so glad I was able to see it! Bravo to all!

    Surprisingly disappointing

by Pinklemon on 3/26/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Of course, the ballet, the music, the story by themselves are amazing. Their quality is not to be proven or discussed anymore. What bothered me during this show, and what makes me say that it was disappointing, is the performance of the dancers, which was surprisingly average. It was the first time I went to see a show by the American Ballet Theatre, and as I understood they were pretty famous, I was expecting a performance ranking from 'very acceptable' to 'very good'. On the contrary, on the day of the show, the dancers seemed to be not fully prepared, as if they still were at a stage of rehearsals. For example, one of the dancers simply fell down during the first Act, also, one dancer missed her entry, and had to join her partners by walking across the stage to take her empty spot. Those are two noticeable occurrences, but there was also an obvious overall desynchronization among the dancers. It was sincerely the first time I saw such a low-level performance from a national ballet company. As a conclusion, I highly recommend everyone to go see 'Giselle' as it is an amazing piece of art, but not by the American Ballet Theatre!

    Awesome!!

by bpadge on 3/26/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

The performance was amazing, and the dancers are top notch. The elegance, professionalism, and making the most difficult seem effortless was simply astounding. The tickets were a little steep for this market environment, but hey to me it was worth it.

    Giselle

by Anonymous on 3/26/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Great performance though the second act was far superior to the first. My only complaint that my seat in the Orchestra section literally shortchanged me. It was at least 6" short on leg room. Us single ticket buyers shouldn't be penalized just because we're single.

    Amazing

by Twinklepleck on 3/25/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Outstanding performance by ABT! They danced with passion that was deeply felt. Our 9 year old attended and she loved Giselle. She will be attending the ABT Youth Summer Workshop in NY this summer so it was extra special for her to see what hard work and years of training result in. Beautiful performance!

    Captivating!

by Liiya on 3/25/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Giselle performed by the ABT was wonderful to watch. They were so fluid and elegant. I saw the show on March 23, 2012 which was my birthday. So, glad I decided to see it! I've been telling everyone about the lovely costumes. I can't wait to see them perform again in the future.

    Constrained excellence

by Sailomanr on 3/25/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Wonderful company. Wish they would bring more programs. Looked at times that the performance stage constrained. But they rose above this with some superb dancers, marvelous corps, and not to be missed engagement.

Julie Kent is amazing. The production was fabulous and it was a grand opening night. I hope the other nights are as good. ABT rarely disappoints.

    ABT's Giselle was fantastic!

    by Dance3 on 3/24/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

ABT's performance of Giselle this past Thursday evening was wonderful. It's a classic ballet with choreography that one patron referred to as "so satisfying" when I mentioned that it was all symetrical. In this performance, the relationship of the dancers' movements and the music was done in perfect time. The dancers' movements were beautiful as well. And the dancing as well as the acting of the two main characters (Giselle and 'Loys') were particularly excellent!

ABT/Julie Kent & Marcelo Gomes Absolutely Amazing!

by Judyoody on 3/24/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

The entire production was very special but the performance by Julie Kent and Marcelo Gomes was beyond beautiful. Julie is light, quick and perfect in the role of Giselle and Marcelo is the quintessential Prince. Together their dancing and their acting was so moving and the lifts appeared to be effortless...it was Absolutely Amazing!

    Real Artists on Stage

by lulubolshoi on 3/24/12Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Giselle is a ballet to be performed by great dancers. Good dancers know how to turn, jump, etc, but only great dancers can do what Julie Kent and Marcelo Gomes did last Thursday. They gave it all to the audience. Great performance. Great acting.

    Beautiful ballet!!

by JennyLu on 3/1/10Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton Rouge

ABT II's preformance was wonderful. I really appreciated the variety of moods and energies among the different pieces they presented. Swan Lake and Pavlovsk was full of emotion and beauty. Le Corsaire really proved the dancers' skills and talents, showcasing their athletic ability with very difficult turns and leaps within a very high-energy number. The last piece, Interplay, was a great modern dance to end the night.

    ABT II in Baton Rouge

by bec7 on 3/1/10Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton Rouge

All five of the dances were great. The one which was most impressive was the pas de deux from Swan Lake, as the ballerina was perfect -- very strong, technically spot-on and very emotive. The dance "Pavlovsk" had a great backstory and so made the piece memorable. We also really liked Le Corsaise pas de trois -- good showcase for the dancers.

American Ballet Theater - OUR National Treasure

by Countplato on 7/27/09Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - Los Angeles

American Ballet Theater did an outstanding performance “Romeo and Juliet.” This is the second time I’ve seen ABT’s performance of Prokofiev’s masterpiece. The American Ballet Theater is one of our nation’s treasures. There might have been a time when Russia was showing us how it’s done, but I believe ABT has superseded any ballet company to date. The lavish set designs, elaborate costumes, and outstanding performances of the entire company is a sight to behold. Herman Cornejo (Romeo) and Xiomara Reyes (Juliet) capture our hearts from the beginning. I found myself tearing up at the end of the first act as there dancing and acting was so sincere. The tension between the characters Mercutio (Carlos Lopez) and Tybalt (Isaac Stappas) is immediately apparent and the choreography of the dual scene is exactly in step and beat to the music. Also of note was the market scene brawl where several characters are sword fighting, and you could see the intense training that these people perfected. The brilliant comic relief of Kelley Boyd (Juliet’s nurse) kept us laughing at just the right moments as the storyline is rather dire. Conductor Ormsby Wilkins’ orchestra was amazingly sprite when they needed to be as well as ponderous when the scene called for it. Wish I knew who they were as it wasn’t written anywhere in the program. The pomp and circumstance for many of the scenes within the acts were filled with perfection even with all of the incidental characters. By and large, it is a production to behold. You won’t come out of there disappointed, but you will come out of there teary eyed.

    Juliet stole the show!

by toothpick on 7/23/09Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - Los Angeles

ABT's presentation of Romeo and Juliet was lovely and unexpectedly lively. Even the village scenes were fun to watch. The choreography was full of pleasant surprises. While Jared Matthews was impressive as Mercutio and Cory Stearns was darling and youthful as Romeo, it was Hee Seo who took my breath away. In fact the whole audience seemed to gasp in amazement as Ms. Seo danced her first playful scene with the nurse. By the time we got to the balcony scene, the audience was totally entranced. And, to see her finally dance as a limp and "lifeless" body in the arms of young Romeo was both impressive and heartbreaking. The quality of Ms. Seo's movement is light and etherial, yet her ability to express emotion in her face kept her grounded in the character of Juliet throughout. Well done, ABT!

    Romeo and Juliet

by Runaroundsue on 7/22/09Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - Los Angeles

The pairing of Roberto Bolle, the Italien heartthrob, as Romeo with Kiev-born Irina Dvorovenko as Juliet in Kenneth MacMillan’s 1965 three-act "Romeo and Juliet."was superb. What a great combination! They were a perfect match for each other. Bolle told Romeo’s story through his athletic, musically astute dancing, and through his total commitment to the role and to his Juliet. Dvorovenko started as a naive and spoiled child, then morphed into an adolescent flirt. One could virtually see her grow until the final transformation when she dragged herself across the bier to touch Romeo’s hand one last time before expiring. Prokofiev's score was inspiring, the costumes lavish and the scenes impressive. All in all, it was totally what one expects the performance of a great ballet to be.
