About

John Newton (Tony Award® nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart (Erin Mackey). Accompanied by his slave, Thomas (Tony Award® winner Chuck Cooper), John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.

Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

    AMAZING!!

by Dellilly on 10/19/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

I am sad that this is going to have a short run, as it is a wonderful play with great music and acting and a story that is historically significant. I hope that it will start a run on "Broadway Across America" so that more people can see it.

    True Grace

by Graceonbroadway on 10/19/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

I don't want to over dramatize it but this show captures the essence of grace as well as any show or movie I have ever seen. At it's core all grace is undeserved and it's power comes to us through forgiveness. This show reminds us just how horrid slavery was and how it is only through forgiveness that there truly can be reconciliation. May this show in some way help to catalyze a new hope for race relations in America.

    Fantastic

by mikiebabe on 10/19/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Before I bought tickets for this show I read the poor reviews from the critics. All I can say is that I totally disagree with their sentiments. This is a brilliant show-strong cast, great singing, well produced and a great storyline. The last scene where the whole cast sing Amazing Grace brought tears to my eyes. My wife and I always judge events on a count of 10 and we both agree that this is a 10 out of 10 experience.

It closes in one week and this saddens me so much. It was superb and I was so moved by it. If it goes on tour I urge everyone to go see it! Bravo!

Musical score well done, although the role of John Newton was played by the understudy he did an outstanding job.

Just like the title, it was AMAZING.. Done very well i really enjoyed this play. Some of the music was a bit weak in places, but the acting superb and we all loved it. Great to know the story of John Newton and learn some history as well. Keep it on Broadway longer so more folks can see it!

    A Refreshing Broadway Alternative

by ThePerl on 10/13/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Many Broadway musicals rely on a heavy diet of inuendo or filthy talk. Not this one. This is a wonderful story of the coming of age of the Human spirit. Refreshing to see this. A bit over priced, but worth it.

Beautiful Singing, Average Acting with Overacting

by Paige222 on 10/13/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

The voices of all were top-notch, well trained and beautiful. The acting was not as strong. The sparkle and energy one expects from a Broadway production was uneven. The leads lacked passion, while supporting cast over acted at times. Costumes were wonderful. Dancing impressive. Some prop distractions (using silver chain link with iron manacles when wrapping Thomas made me wonder if the actual chain was misplaced and someone grabbed one off of a bicycle out back) I was disconnected toward the end of Act One, but the effect of them torn and Thomas' saving of John gave me hope that Act Two might pick up. I was most surprised by the slow move into the final crescendo of the hymn Amazing Grace at the end. I expected more feeling from John. The feeling came when the cast, then the audience, joined in.

Awesome through and through. Went with wife, kids (10, 8, 6) and in-laws. Kids sat through without complaining, but much was above their comprehension level. Probably more for early teens and up.

    'Amazing, amazing Grace'

by Rich18 on 10/13/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

The first act was a bit slow in developing the story plot, which we have seen before in other stories, but the standout was the redemption of a man, the soul of a woman who wanted to correct injustices and even though a history piece, it all seems so relevant to today. The second act might have been called, get out the kleenex!! Geez, we did not bring enough... quite powerful and emotional and so very relevant. We are scratching our heads as to 'why' this show is closing? Seems like the holidays would have been perfect for such a message from the heart...

    Amazing Grace beyond amazing!!!

by Rockettemama on 10/12/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

As a frequent visitor to NYC, I've seen many musicals, but none has ever moved me like Amazing Grace. The acting was SUPERB; the special effects were unexpected and thrilling; but the story line stole the show. This is a musical that stirs your soul, uplifts your spirit and leaves you wanting more. I've seen Wicked, Les Miserables, American in Paris, and dozens more, but nothing on Broadway has ever matched Amazing Grace. I'm not sure anything ever can.
