John Newton (Tony Award® nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart (Erin Mackey). Accompanied by his slave, Thomas (Tony Award® winner Chuck Cooper), John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.
Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.
The show was very interesting. I took my dad it was a awesome show
To set the record straight, we all need God's grace provided by His Son, but the cast was not in need of any grace from the audience as each of its members were superb in regards to acting, rapport, and especially with their vocals. The mix from the sound booth was spot on, and the orchestra sounded tremendous. When this cast comes to a theatre near you, make sure you attend a performance.
I'm not aware if the relative short run on Broadway was contractual or because of sales, but the message, acting, and singing was excellent.
Saw Amazing Grace in NYC last week & thought it was terrific. It's very evident that the actors are really dedicated to the story, because they are intense & electric with each line and song. They all deliver one powerful performance after another and they make history come alive. This is not only an important story, but also a part of our human experience that needs to be shared and healed together. The entire theater audience & cast singing the song together at the end of the performance was what I was waiting for and it delivered 100%!
I saw this AMAZING show last night and I'm still in the clouds! Wonderful music, marvelous acting, stunning sets and even special effects worthy of a Spielberg movie. What more could you ask for? Also, a story that will break your heart AND lift your spirits. How could such a great show be closing so soon?!! When it goes on tour I will travel to see it again. Hope a cast album is recorded soon!!!
I was excited to see this show as a friend said it was great. I was not disappointed. Unbelievable sets, talent and content. It was a wonderful experience. Do not understand why it is closing so early. I hope it goes out to other markets and makes it way back to Broadway. I would see again.
I just had to write and say the production of Amazing Grace was...well amazing! I attended the 2pm performance today and it was incredible. Wonderful acting, beautiful singing, a few humorous moments, intense dramatic scenes, (the "water" scene of John and Thomas was breathtaking and of course an inspiring story came through of hope and perseverance during a time in history that will never be looked on fondly. PLEASE DON'T STOP THE SHOW. Advertise, promote do whatever it takes, but keep the show going. In this day and age of despair for so many it shows how adversity and the "norm" can be changed. It gives hope. Thank you for a entertaining, delightful, thought provoking show.
This is truly live theater at it's greatest. Every component was amazing! I am so glad I saw it and found myself in tears more than once. Job well done. Bravo to the cast and crew!!
Loved this play. The performers had beautiful voices. The storyline based on John Newton's life was dramatic and compelling. The second half of the play captured my heart and the ending-Outstanding!!
Great voices and surpisingly true to some of the more bizzare events drawn from John Newton's life. Of course- many aspects of the story-line are fictitious which helps move the plot along. Beautiful rendition of the beloved hymn to close the show.
So sorry it is closing on Broadway. Great story. Broadway needs more uplifting stories being told.
What a spectacular job done by the cast, crew, director, producers, writers -everyone involved- absolutely outstanding! From the intricacies of set and costume design, to the choreography of movement to music, this was a captivating experience from start to finish! The rich history of the story depicted the message that is so powerfully poignant, nothing was watered down, the precious gift of grace was completely made evident. Hoping to see this production back on Broadway sooner rather than later!
A great show if you can see this production before it closes . Go see it!
Amazing Grace is a beautifully done, highly uplifting show. I went through the full range of emotions during this show, which is about John Newton, a slave trader who found his way back to God. The music/songs were wonderful - the main characters (John Newton and Mary Cattlett) had superb singing voices. There was an incredible underwater scene at the end of Act I. I am saddened that this show is closing next week. I've seen it twice during its' short stay on Broadway and would go back again - it's that good. I guess with witches, lions, phantoms, and all the other characters in current Broadway shows, there was no room on Broadway for a well done, highly uplifting show about returning to God.
Amazing Grace was - not amazing. The entire production reminded me of a very good collegiate production: good lighting, good acting, good sound, good music. But non of it captured me, nor did it convince me that the actors were anything but 2015 actors playing a role. Disappointing to be sure - not worth seeing. And - by singing the title song as a finale - seemed a shallow way to insure a standing ovation for a show that does not deserve one. One shining scene with Prince Henri - the most believable character.
We were watching Fox News one morning and saw a review of the Play. We immediately bought tickets and traveled 3 hours for a Sunday show. It was one of the best shows we have seen in New York. The cast was fantastic, loved the depth of voice of Josh Young. The story was refreshing and as for the rest of the cast we loved them all. Saw real emotion from the cast as they became the characters both physically and emotionally. The crowd was on their feet. We wish it would stay but anxiously await the dates if it goes on the road.
We enjoyed the show tremendously. Loved the acting and the music.
This show was simply beautiful. Words can not describe how sad I am that it is getting cancelled next week. The acting and singing were superb. Josh Young, Erin Mackey, Chuck Cooper and Chris Hoch all performed Tony worthy performances. I have seen many shows on Broadway, and this is rated at the top for me. Also, there is a drowning scene at the end of Act I that is by FAR the best special effects scene I have ever experienced.
LOVED it!! The acting, the vocals, the costumes, the story -- all inspiring!
This was one of the best shows I have seen. Captivating from start to finish. Very moving. So sad that it is closing so that more people will not see it. I highly recommend going to see this before it closes next week.
