About

ALVVAYS IN CONCERT:

Canadian indie pop outfit Alvvays made big moves in 2014, releasing their self-titled debut album to heaps of critical acclaim and a No. 1 spot on the US college charts before hitting the road on a highly anticipated tour. The band's live shows picked up where the album left off, featuring the wry, honest vocals of frontwoman Molly Rankin atop a gauzy wash of distorted guitar, jangly percussion, and vintage synth riffs. Rankin's unaffected voice is an ideal vessel, allowing her conflicted lyrics -- mundane and full of wonder in turns -- to really shine on songs like "Adult Diversion" and "Archie, Marry Me". A rising young act with big things on the horizon, Alvvays has fans eager to experience their nostalgic, fuzzed-out live shows on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Alvvays formed in Toronto in 2012 around the music of Molly Rankin, a budding singer-songwriter who had previously released a solo EP in 2010. Shortly after that solo outing Rankin teamed up with childhood friend Kerri MacLellan (keyboards) and high school buddy Alec O'Hanley (guitar), and with the addition of bassist Brian "Ginger" Murphy and drummer Phil MacIsaac they became Alvvays. The group spent a couple years honing their sound and building a fanbase with regional shows, and in 2014 they released their self-titled debut album. The record was a success, topping the US college charts and earning praise from critics including Stereogum, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone. The group made good on their growing reputation, delivering a string of powerful performances on their first headlining tour. Alvvays continues to deliver their high-energy indie sound to enthusiastic ticket buyers across the country, building anticipation for their highly anticipated sophomore album.

Over the course of their career, Alvvays have played venues such as The Depot, the Fillmore, and the Observatory North Park to capacity.

    Props to Sound & Staff

by Danny T. on 10/29/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

It’s tough to beat The Fillmore for its historical relevance as an iconic venue. And despite loving the band and being hyped to see them perform, when a staff is as courteous and professional as they were on Wednesday, plus a sound engineering crew that doesn’t lazily default to a heavy bass in the mix that so prevalent these days, it makes for a truly unforgettable experience. From the line in, to search, to ticketing, to wristbands, to the bar, to the merch table, to the ushers, to the poster handlers on the way out. Fantastic event.

    but....

by alvvaysenjoyer on 10/29/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

the band was great. there were unruly mustached Hawaiian shirt wearing ingrates MOSHING (semi-understandable but totally inconsiderate of literally everyone in the immediate vicinity) despite fervent pushback. One even had the gall to taunt me to "have fun" when I was getting involuntarily bashed every 3 seconds. I was in the same spot for over an hour. Unreal.

    Awesome gig

by Jake V on 10/24/22Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Haven't seen alvvays back in Boise since Treefort. 2 band bill on a weeknight with the support band being Slow Pulp was a welcome sight. Kicked off at 8 and Slow Pulp ripped a set and was done by 8:30. 9 Alvvays goes on.. They just put out a new album which rocks of course. They played a ton of new songs which is totally welcome as well as some of their big hits like Archie, Marry Me and In Undertow. They even got a two song encore. Great gig. Well attended.

A+ for the bands, C for the venue

by Limaruwa on 10/21/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

I was blown away by Slow Pulp and Alvvays, especially Alvvays. They are one of the rare bands that actually sounds even more incredible live than they do on their records. I can't wait to see them again. The Depot is an okay venue. The sound guys do a great job. In fact, all the staff I encountered were very nice people. I noticed on a set of stairs in the venue, one of the steps had no reflective tape on it. I saw probably 50 people stumble over that step. The venue was also PACKED, uncomfortably packed. They sell fried food at the bar, and it tends to stink. I was quite happy with my Liquid Death ($5) which came out of the freezer and had bits of slush in it--it was absolutely delicious.

by Foxy on 10/21/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

Alvvays was unbelievably good! They sound even better than they do on their albums. The chemistry between band members and the stage presence they command is impressive and makes for a really great and high energy show!

Never Going To An All-Ages Show Again

by SP on 10/21/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

All ages shows are a no-go for me going forward. So much of the high school/college crowd just recorded way way way too much. Social media has ruined shows. One person directly in front of me must have recorded 6-7 entire songs. So frustrating. Music sounded good, but the phones killed the ambiance.

    Best concert ever

by $wagbot on 10/21/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

I’ve seen Alvvays in the past, but this was next level. The atmosphere was amazing and the music was better than the recordings. Slowpulp was great too! Much love to all bands and those in attendance.

    totally awesome

by nathanofthesevenseas on 6/1/18Port City Music Hall - Portland

molly rankin is the best songwriter to come along since the early nineties. the show in portland was electric. when music resonates with people you can't help but respond. it was hot, sweaty and the crowd swayed in solidarity.

    Highlight of the night

    by RTB9 on 12/12/17Express Live! - Columbus

Saw Alvvays as an opener to Spoon, loved their performance. Sound was a bit muddy but Molly's vocals rang through and the keyboard was also very audible which was great. Played a lot of their new album which helped me discover a few new songs I still hadn't listened to in depth before. Would totally recommend seeing this band live.

    OK performance; Poor sound

by Baloo822 on 10/29/17The Fillmore - San Francisco

The band was OK. Not a great live band, but not bad either. No better or worse than just listening to one of their studio albums. However, the mix was terrible. This is jangle pop. You have to be able to hear the high end -- vocals, lead guitar, high end of the keys. The Fillmore had the sound set for a different kind of band. The keys were way too loud, especially the low end. The kick -- which you can barely hear on any of their albums -- was louder than anything. Basically, the low end overpowered what you expect to hear from a band like this. The poor mix turned an average show into a below average one.

Alvvays is definitely my new favorite band! Their song writing ability is amazing! I loved their first album so much that I was scared that it had to go downhill after that, but amazingly their second album is just as good or maybe even better (can't decide). The good news is that they are playing almost every song from both albums on this tour. I WILL ALWAYS GO TO EVERY ALVVAYS SHOW THAT I CAN AND YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME.

    With Alvvays in Paradise

by eumat on 10/6/17Paradise Rock Club - Boston

This was my first time at the Paradise Rock Club and I can say with confidence that it will not be the last one. Great acoustic and great location. The bars are perfectly distributed so it is easy to get a drink. Alvvays put together a remarkable show! Maybe they should have kept a couple of hits for the 'encore'. I would love to see them again and again and again.

    Great Performance

by abcam on 6/12/15Brighton Music Hall - Boston

The time listed on the ticket was 8pm, but the opening act did not start playing until 9, but that is to be expected. Open act was impressively good, I enjoyed it. Alvvays sounded great live, I was able to hear every instrument clearly and distinctly. They were very nice too, I think the lead singer said "thank you" after every song. Great experience, would recommend to everyone.

    Impossible not to love

by TBCT on 11/15/14Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

This band does melodic, melancholy garage pop better than anyone I've heard in a long time. I've seen them three times and they have a wonderfully fresh and infectious sound without a hint of pretension. Just blissful pop with a great balance of jangly guitars, keyboard and singer Molly's sweet (but never saccharine) vocals. The album is consistently strong with hooks galore.
