About

Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs

Named one of the most fun people in show business by Time Magazine, Olivier and Tony-Award winning actor, singer and author Alan Cumming makes his debut in Melbourne with a raucous one-man show. Alan Cumming: Sings Sappy Songs is an eclectic, wildly entertaining mix of intimate stories - from the sentimental to the sassy - and witty reinterpretations of pop songs and stage classics, especially tailored for his tour down under.

Sings Sappy Songs is inspired by Cumming’s year hosting the infamous “Club Cumming” in his dressing room during the revival of Cabaret on Broadway and recently scored rave reviews during a residency at New York’s legendary Carlyle Hotel.  Joining him on stage for a night of irreverent humour and mischief-making is long-time collaborator and Emmy Award-winning musical director Lance Horne. Both will be rocking out with an Australian band.

Alan Cumming is a shape-shifting trickster, as enthralling and nimble with Shakespeare as he is with show tunes, and an irresistible presence in any room. He’s garnered a legion of fans through his career on stage and screen, including his acclaimed turn as Eli Gold on CBS’s The Good Wife, and his work as a columnist and author of the NY Times Best Selling memoir, Not My Father's Son.

"In the underpopulated arena of male cabaret singers, Mr. Cumming may be the only one with the talent and drive to change its direction.” – New York Times.

“Forget sexy. Tony Award winner Alan Cumming is bringing cabaret back. In the one man show, the Scottish actor-singer unveils a naughty and comical evening. His visceral banter is balanced by his performance of kooky and mainstream songs. Yes, this irresistible scamp has feelings. But he is first and foremost fabulous.” - Los Angeles Times.

“Taking command of the stage with the ease of a vaudevillian who has been treading the boards for decades, Mr. Cumming entertained with a capital E.”- New York Times

This show was all the things that Alan Cumming is: talented, witty, smart, funny, and just a touch melancholy in between. He put on a great show, and I was glad I got to see it. Fun and worthwhile!

    A Fantastic Evening

by RobnTeegsMom on 12/5/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Alan Cumming is an amazingly talented performer. Obviously he is a versatile actor, but he also has a rich and powerful voice that will move you to your core. The song choices in his Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs performance are a unique mix of, yes, sappy, but also deeply moving and unique choices. He is a gifted storyteller, who will draw you in with his very personal tales of his remarkable life. It was a most enjoyable evening, shared with both my husband and daughter.

The BEST performance at the Majestic I've seen!

by BrdwayGal on 6/29/16Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

As a season holder I've seen several Broadway plays and attended a few live performances this year at the Majestic. I have to admit that Alan Cumming was by far the best I've seen this year. Perhaps because he is one of my favorite TV stars, or Broadway performers, I enjoyed him so much. However, this is the first time I've seen him perform by himself. He OWNED that stage. Loved it!

    Alan Cumming blew my mind!

by SMP3 on 6/29/16Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

I went to see Eli from The Good Wife. I went to see any of the characters so well played by Alan Cumming. I was treated to- no, thrilled by this funny, transparent and immensely talented performer. He didn't just sing sappy songs, he embodied them. I left feeling as though I had been to a top Broadway musical performance. Bravo!

    Lots of Fun

by Fan0123 on 6/29/16Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

Great sense of humor, really connected with his audience, great venue (The Majestic Theater in San Antonio). The only negative was the volume - too loud. The yelps of praise from the Texas audience were also deafening. Otherwise great fun.
