  • Beautiful!

by Pergolesi on 10/18/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Brian K. Johnson sang a profound Opera backed by a flawless orchestra. I was amazed, speechless and my jaw dropped durring the performance several times. The song to the moon was amazing. If you haven't been to an opera before I would suggest going to one. In fact, I would suggest anyone put an opera on their bucket list (List of things to do before you die, or kick the bucket), and this one would do just fine for that requirement. This show was high quality and the orchestra and singers did not make any mistakes.

Very enjoyable evening.... Putting together the Orchestra, with the Chorus and the Opera Singers makes for an incredible performance. Well done.

  • Disappointing at EJ Thomas....

by AkronUGrad on 10/17/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 3 out of 5

While the Akron Symphony Orchestra and Chorus were enjoyable, the sound from the chorus seemed muted as they were seated behind the orchestra. The strings had a feature which was quite lovely. The featured performer, Dina (soprano), was disappointing, although part of that was due to my distraction with the uncomplimentary shawl she frumpily wore and which always seemed ready to fall to the floor in the first half. The tenor seemed very nervous and inexperienced while the baritone stole the show for me. He had a rich, beautiful tone. While EJ Thomas was not very full, ticketmaster's system did not allow us to purchase different tickets even though I made several attempts at different seating under the same price range. It kept coming back to the original offered seats.

They did a beautiful job! The cast was very talented and amazing!

My husband and I had a good time and especially enjoyed the placement of the 'chorus' in the balcony. It was a surprise when they stood up during the show and sang. It created an added interest for us. The actors had to work in a small stage area with spartan props, but did a good job bringing the story to life.

  • Porgy and Bess

I enjoyed this show because it was so well done, also for its historical and controversial value, and because it provided me an opportunity to explore racial issues with a friend who met me at the show.

Trying to read the words above the actors was tricky to keep up with what was going on on the stage

  • ASO Triumphs with "Porgy & Bess"

The Akron Symphony presented the event of the year this past weekend when they offered "Porgy and Bess." The voices excelled and the orchestra was magnificently led by Maestro Wilkins. Tutti Bravi!

  • Porgy and Bess was excellent. Music was the best.

by Sunshineallday on 4/17/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

The music for Porgy and Bess was wonderful. The local singers were excellent vocalists and actors. They seems to be having fun, too. What talent we have in the Akron area.

  • Porgy & Bess - E.J. Thomas, Akron, OH

by RandyWW on 4/17/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

Started promptly at 8 PM, as advertised. This was the full operatic version ... everything sung with just a little dialog (eg the police detective). Parking was adaquate. Leaving took a while. The presentation was in 3 acts, with an intermission mid way through. It took a full 3 hours. Although the seating was comfortable, it tended to get harder by the end of the performance. If E. J. Thomas has one downside, it is its lack of a center aisle. If seated in the center, you had to wade through one half of the entire row to leave. The cast was wonderful, and the Akron Symphony Orchestra outdid itself. It was handy to have the actual words being sung projected on a small screen high above the actors. The scenery was minimul ... little more than a few stairs and platforms, used throughout the performance (3 acts). The cast was quite spirited in their efforts, adding an extra element to the overall performance.

The actors were amazing and the singing was heavenly ! I definitely would attend this event again, and I hope it comes back every year. There was good harmony and synchronization between the opera and the Akron Symphony. Great job done by all!

Fantastic evening. Michael and his band blended seamlessly with the Akron Symphony resulting in a magical performance. Michael has only gotten better since his broadway performances in Movin' Out, showing off his wide range of vocals and instrumental abilities (playing the saxophone, guitar, piano, and harmonica...what's next drums?). Would love to see the "Songs of John" show come to town!

  • by Anonymous on 2/15/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Michael is a fantastic performer and a very multi-talented musician. I would highly recommend seeing him again. He did mention that he does a "Music of Elton John & More" also, and I would love to see this come to E.J. Thomas as well.

  • Michael Cavanaugh was amazing

by EBartz on 2/14/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

We had seen him in Cleveland for Moving Out and knew we had to see him again. The performance was fabulous. The crowd amazing. We need this type of entertainment more frequently...Not just Akron Symphony, but people appearing with them.

by RosyRosy on 2/14/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert! Michael Cavanaugh is an extremely talented musician who engages the audience non-stop for 2 hours. Beautiful backing by the Akron Symphony Orchestra.

  • Just a great Concert

    by Three36 on 2/14/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Having never heard of the artist, I did not have high hopes. After the first song, I knew I had a winner. His music whether by Billy Joel, Elton John or written by him were all extraordinary. The Akron symphony was just superb. The String section was fantastic. I would have paid double what I paid to see this performance.

  • Michael Cavanaugh was awesome!

by Lindajanek on 2/14/11E.J. Thomas Hall - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

I became a fan of Michael Cavanaugh when I saw him in Movin' Out in Cleveland. He is extremely talented and doing the music of Billy Joel in conjunction with the Akron Symphony was brilliant! I hope he will be invited back to E.J. Thomas--it was a great venue for a performance like this!
