About

Extreme alt-rock outfit AFI, short for A Fire Inside, continue to keep their punk rock spirit alive after more than two decades together. The four-piece California band, impressively composed of the same lineup since 1998, has revitalized hardcore punk ever since their 1991 beginning, though the crew didn’t see mainstream success until their 2003 platinum-selling “Sing the Sorrow.”

Since that time, AFI has satiated ticket holders at amped up concerts nationwide, either on their own headlining runs or as part of the Vans Warped Tour on several occasions.

After a four-year recording hiatus, AFI unveiled its ninth studio set, “Burials,” in October 2013. The collection, produced by Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World), peaked at No. 9 on The Billboard 200. Some tracks on the Republic Records release (“17 Crimes” and “I Hope You Suffer” for example) lean more toward hard rock than horror punk or goth-punk, both labels AFI’s received with past work.

Let me start this review by saying that I am in no way a professional artist. I am just a working stiff that attends 20-30 different shows each year. AFI needs to invest in back up singers to support Davey or maybe even a cool local choir for a few songs. Davey has carried this band on his back for the past 10 years with his voice and unfortunately that has taken it's toll. The music itself was decent however, very easy to get caught up in all of the memories each vintage song brings. A few tweaks and this could have been one amazing show.

It was a show you would bring your wife to.. mostly all popular songs from the past on the set list

  • AFI - Oakland - Did NOT deliver

by JennaJoMama on 1/24/17Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

You would think that, returning to one of their so-called "home towns," AFI would really spit out some righteous, original punk wonderment.... but no. It was all the current, poppy-funk schtuff, and NOTHING for us original AFI'ers! Not ONE song from even Black Sails... no God Called in Sick... no Prayer Position.. no At a Glance... nothing from Very Proud of Ya... I mean, it was just a joke. A push pit in the middle, these funkers didn't even know how to collaborate with folks for a real pit. It was pathetic. My husband said he will never see another AFI show in his life - and he's been to at least 10 over the years. Thanks for nothing, guys.

  • Love them!

by Stefahknee on 1/24/17Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great show! I felt like I was 16 again, they sounded just as good than, as they did tonight!! Really a great performance, the venue was great too, small (not a bad seat in the theatre) great acoustics and lights! Over all I'd love to see AFI again, and I'd love to go to the fox theatre in Oakland for another show.

  • Exactly What I expected

by frankthetank on 1/24/17Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, it was exactly what I expected. They played the classic. I wish it was a longer set, they only played for an hour and ten minutes. Regardless, great show and had a lot of fun.

  • Best passionate show I've been to yet.

    by Amendez4l on 1/24/17Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Since I'm 5'4 I would've had to be all the way up front in order to see anything, but besides that it was a fantastic show overall.

  • AFI = Mindblowing!

    by Bunny042693 on 10/20/14Iron City - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen a lot of concerts and this is my favorite one I have ever been to. The stage presence was absolutely amazing, the reaction with the crowd was great and they sounded just like they do on albums without the nonsense of lip syncing. Davey's crowd walking was so cool. I could not have asked for more out of a concert.

  • AFI with Nostalghia amazing!

    by dAtA29 on 10/12/14Mercury Ballroom - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

First off, just wanted to say the venue was amazing. Second, the bands were fantastic. I'm just thrilled AFI came to Kentucky. The show was fantastic, and I would highly recommend checking out shows at the Mercury Ballroom , and seeing AFI. The guys sounded great, as always. And Nostalghia was seriously kick ass. The lead singing has a very unique voice, and she puts on a good performance. Also props to AFI coming out saying hi to their fans. And as always a thank you to both bands for their amazing performances.

AFI is outstanding. Great stage presence and truly entertaining.

  • Great show, but shorter than expected.

by jensch on 10/11/14Mercury Ballroom - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

AFI played a wide range of songs, old and new, which was great. However the set was only 1 hr long....out of the many albums they have, you would think the set would be MUCH longer. A little disappointed in that. Otherwise, they put on a great show as always. This is my second time seeing them and they are just as talented now as they were back in 2005 when I saw them!

  • Afi/Nostalghia bring it

  • AFI rocked!!!

by Blackaudio on 1/31/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The Ritz was a great place to see a show! The opening acts seemed like they took forever. Wasn't impressed with either of them. But, AFI was fabulous!!! Played old school songs and new. Havok sounded amazing!!

  • Unforgettable Night For Sure At Center Stage

by thatlavenderblonde on 1/30/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I had reservations about going alone to a concert, I'd done it before, and had a decent experience. But I could not pass up the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands at an affordable price. If you've never been to a concert at Center Stage before, it's hands down one of the best music venues in Atlanta. I've seen shows at Phillips Arena, The Tabernacle, and The Masquerade. The Masquerade is easily one of the worst venues but caters to a ton of my favorite metal and hard rock bands. But Center Stage is fantastic -- compared to hole-in-the walls like the Masquerade. The stage area allows the artist to connect with fans and choose how intimate they want to be with the audience. With the option of seating and floor at the same price, it's really a win-win. Now, as for AFI, they really took the stage by storm, and Davey gave 100%+ during his performance. His energy never dissipated and the expressions and emotions he displayed were incredibly powerful. While his voice may not be 100% as clean as it use to be, he has in no way lost his touch. A true front man. The set was crazy intense, with a good bit of old, new, and really old stuff from their roots. The rest of the guys, Hunter, Jade, and Adam were awesome as well. Never letting up and always keeping energetic pace with Davey. This band really moves as a body of art. Nothing that you would see in much of mainstream musicians. The hardest part of the night was when it all ended, while they played the encore. I don't think they could ever play long enough to satisfy my craving for this band. All in all, AFI is one of the single most dedicated bands left in their genre, do everything you can to see them live before it's too late. They are worth every penny, and worth the wait.

A Fire Inside = awesome sauce. This venue is awesome, the bands are so close to you!

  • by Anonymous on 1/28/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

Best show I've seen at the Ritz, and possibly my favorite concert I've ever seen. I eagerly await the next time AFI comes here.

  • AFI great as always!

by KatVP on 1/27/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The opening acts were terrible, but I came to see AFI. Set list a bit short thou.

  • Bathroom attendance?

by Tribbrus on 1/27/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Konig was a horriblely lack luster band and Youth Code had promise. Youth Code had a great beat but due to sound issues their words were muffled and incomprehensible. AFI, on the other hand, sounded amazing the entire time. The lead singer did a standing crowd surf that was out of this world. The concert went much better than expected other than having to deal with a bathroom attendant. Seriously, did I really need someone to pump soap into my hand and give me a wash cloth?

  • AFI was awesome as usual

by nolaboa on 1/27/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

ANNND i liked the opening bands when apparently many did not

  • Amazing performance

    by kp11 on 1/27/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The openers had their good and bad moments, but AFI was consistently incredible. Great sound and engaging performance.

  • mediocre... granted Im a bitter 30 yr old NOFX fan

by Anonymous on 1/27/14The Ritz Ybor - TampaRating: 2 out of 5

pretty lame. sorry AFI. The singer was jumping all over the place and pointing to the sky like he was trying to work an arena - good show of enthusiasm, but just not relavant. They band had zero cross-chatter or talking to the crowd, very boring performance. Musically, they played their songs well. I guess I am not just into the band or the venue or just wasn't drunk enough... if you like a lot and have the money to blow and its easy to get to and from the venue then go for it, otherwise dont go out of your way...
