  • A Christmas Carol with a twist!

by Scrooge1 on 12/8/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

This was our family's first time seeing A Christmas Carol and we all thoroughly enjoyed it including my 16 year old son. It truly was entertaining for young and old. I thought Wood's son did a wonderful job as Scrooge and loved the references to his father and the cameo by Ira David Wood himself. Enjoyed having it come to the DPAC. A great way to start the holiday season. I love the interaction with the audience and the comedy is so unexpected with some current day references. Yet there were the tender moments you expect from A Christmas Carol.

  • Cheddar cheese

by DissappointingDickens on 12/8/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

Too hokey and cheesy, I would have prefered a modern story if you are going to tell modern jokes, seemed like he was doing an impression of Robin Williams doing Scrooge.

  • A Christmas Carol was wonderful!

Ira David Wood IV was amazing in Theatre in the Park's production of A Christmas Carol. The legacy continues.

  • Christmas Carol Fantastic!

by scubadood on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third time I have seen "A Christmas Carol". When I heard that Ira David Woods III would not be doing it, I was disappointed....however, his son did an amazing job! It was as good as ever from beginning to end. This really needs to be part of everyone's Christmas rituals each year!

  • A perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!

by MorganLS on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

A classic with a twist! Theatre in the Park's A Christmas Carol is always a great way to get into the Christmas spirit! I attend every year, and have since I was a little girl, and plan on continuing the tradition each year. I recommend this show to anyone who loves a good story and a good joke. It is the perfect combination of a classic story and comic relief, with dancing, singing, and incredible talent. It only gets better each year!

  • Christmas Carol's Future is Secure!

by scoutdriver on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I attended the event at DPAC and was concerned given the substitution of IDW IV in his dad's role, but any concern was uncalled for. What a fantastic production and the role of Scrooge is in very good hands. Of course the writing is still IDW III's so the wit and wisdom was in the core of the production. I hope to see IDW III back in his role next year, but if he isn't, I'll still be there!

  • A new Scrooge

by Bill28848 on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Good entertainment. Showcased the very talented Ira Wood IV in song, dance and character portrayment. Cast of thousands and great sets. A bit too much contemporary humor, particularly in the first act, which detracted from the overall tone of the play. Second act was better, with a good finish. Sound quality could be improved - some dialog was difficult to understand.

  • Scrooge is still Lovable, Bless his heart......

by Zarafa on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I would say the son did his father proud! It was a terrific show, great talent and the costumes better than ever. Wonderful to see Ira David III walk across the stage in his cameo appearance, he looks terrific. We have been going to this show for 30+ years off and on as we moved away from Raleigh then back. I'm a big promoter and we took friends at times. The show is full of great talent and laughs.

I have been to see this show for the last 17 years and this show did not disappoint! It was as uplifting and insprirational as ever. The actors were phenonmenal! The script with all of it's nuances was fabulous! The costumes and scenery were incredible! I took several friends with me who had never seen it before and they were all so enamoured by the show that they vowed to make it a new holiday tradtion within their family!

  • A Christmas Carol for the Whole Family

by HillsboroughNative on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

I was not familiar with the IDW version of a Christmas Carol, so was a bit surprised in the first act by all the slap stick humor and popular culture references. By the second act I was laughing and enjoying and fully embraced how great it is to see a classic adapted for my home town. Adults and children will enjoy the comedy and timeless message of this play.

Great show and great triangle tradition. IDW IV was great stepping into his father's shoes.

  • A Christmas Carol was equal to 2008

by pkayhill on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

The part of Scrooge played by Ira David Wood's son was equally entertaining and funny. The whole production was a must see. I will make sure it is on my holiday list every Christmas it plays at the DPAC. This play of the traditional story incorporates current events that keep if fresh and hilarious. I needed this great laugh to start the Christmas season. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Ira David Wood IV is a genius in his role of Scrooge, and I congratulate him on a phenomenal performance! . Thanks, DPAC for providing another professional event.

  • Truely Awesome

As wonderful as the very first time I saw it 20 years ago... I would like to know who the walk-on was in the first act? I think it was the one and only IDW3 If you come to this play and dont leave sing "Put a little Christmas in you heart" you are a real scrooooooge.

  • Fantastic!

  • A Christmas Carol was quirky but fun

by PAB68 on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

This was my daughter's first exposure to A Christmas Carol in the theater. She is 8, so the liberties taken in this script were a stretch for her to grasp. At the intermission, she asked me "where are the ghosts?" and I wasn't sure how to answer her. That being said, I appreciate this play for what it is -- a musical take on a classic that seeks to be funny and at least marginally contemporary. Still, I personally don't see a problem with having Marley actually be in chains as the book suggests -- after all, that fate is ultimately the whole point of the ghostly warnings.

  • Great Optically- Bad Jokes

by Mike6833 on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

Would have been a whole lot better had they stuck to the story and left out all the feeble attempts at humor. Some of the jokes were embarrassingly bad. A very bizarre take on a great traditional story.

  • "A Christmas Carol", not what you expect

by KickingSand on 12/7/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Ira David Woods' "A Christmas Carol" is not for you if you are expecting the traditional story that leaves you with a lump in your throat and a good feeling in your heart. It DOES present a lot of pageantry, singing, and dancing, but the main gist of the play seems to be to present opportunities to crack corny jokes about recent political events. The audience laughs, but it seems to be from obligation instead of true entertainment. The actors themselves are great, but the play just didn't leave me with that "WOW" feeling I was looking for. I've seen it twice now (the other time was 12 years ago) and will not be going again. Charles Dickens would not be happy that his title is being used as a drawing card for a play that doesn't really capture the tone or spirit of his story. If you like song and dance and slight laughs at political misgivings, attend this play. However, do not go expecting to leave with a warm feeling about the upcoming holiday season.

  • A Christmas Carol - A Holiday Tradition

by habasso on 12/6/10DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

My family was once again thrilled with our annual tradition of seeing Ira David Wood's A Christmas Carol. DPAC made it an even better experience - making entrance, seating and even bathroom breaks fast and seamless due to appropriate staffing at those times. Ira David Wood IV was wonderful as Scrooge - following in his father's footsteps. The cast was amazing - but we did wish that the actor playing Scrooge's nephew could keep his mouth closed while dancing... a small distraction overall.
