Charles Dickens is rolling in his grave
by J. L. on 12/23/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5I thought we were going to see A Christmas Carol... I'm not sure what this was supposed to be. Perhaps I didn't read the description, which I didn't think was necessary for something I've seen 100 times, and it indeed says "musical comedy" but this was one of the oddest things I've ever seen. When the first musical number started, I thought, ok, didn't expect that but it should be a nice little change. Then Scrooge shows up and starts firing off corny jokes that have nothing to do with the story. It only goes downhill from there, as he attempts to perform terrible magic tricks that take 10 minutes that once again have nothing to do with the story, and then the political jokes come out. Ok, I understand they are trying to make it funny and entertaining for the children but I cannot understand how they think Trump and Bernie jokes belong in A Christmas Carol. We hear enough of nonsense already, and go to events like this to escape it. Intermission finally arrived and we haven't even progressed in the story. So far, after an hour and a half, we know that Scrooge doesn't like Christmas (and oddly loves Halloween, which made no sense) and his partner is dead. We haven't even gotten to Marley in chains yet and it's half over? We left at intermission and saw many others doing the same. I was shocked to see after that this show has been going for 45 years. I guess that explains why Bob Crachet was 90 years old. So apparently some people enjoy this show but we felt this didn't deserve to be called A Christmas Carol. We now know to avoid anything with A Theatre in the Park before the title of the show we are trying to see, but if Charles Dickens knew they were calling this A Christmas Carol, he'd be rolling in his grave.
