UB40 on Tour

A UB40 concert doubles as a lesson in how reggae has informed pop music over the last few decades. Weaving together island-inspired covers of American hits like "Red Red Wine" and "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You" with their own songs such as "Food for Thought" and "Love Is All Is Alright," the band keeps people dancing and vibing throughout their whole set.

Currently, there are two versions of UB40 touring. One features founding members Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan alongside vocalist Duncan Campbell, while the other features founding vocalist Ali Campbell and percussionist-vocalist Astro. (Please check with your venue to see which group will be appearing.)

UB40 Background

For more than four decades, Birmingham's UB40 have been one of the world's premier fusers of pop and reggae, with their working class, multicultural heritage and keen ear combining to create big hits. Formed in late 1978, the band named themselves after a form Brits had to file in order to receive unemployment benefits. They released their first album, Signing Off, in 1980, and its blend of dub, ska and reggae with pop hooks plus socially aware lyrics made it a critical favorite that launched two Top 10 singles in the UK. In 1983, they had a commercial breakthrough with their fourth album, Labour of Love, an all-covers collection made up of songs released between 1969 and 1972. Songs by reggae and rocksteady stars like The Melodians and Lee "Scratch" Perry made up the bulk of the album, and its biggest hit was a take on Jamaican singer Tony Tribe's cover of Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine," which lets Campbell and Astro trade verses over a bubbly beat.

The global success of "Red Red Wine," which went to No. 1 in the UK in 1983 and topped the American charts five years later, helped UB40 become Britain's de facto reggae ambassadors. Blending self-penned reggae songs with Caribbean-influenced covers of pop hits like "I Got You Babe" (a collaboration with Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde) and "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You," UB40 have forged a path as one of the world's leading reggae bands, their dual commitment to social issues and groovy beats only growing stronger as time goes on.

    by Porsche44 on 7/18/23

What a great venue and a fabulous show. Thank you UB40 for such a magnificent performance!! The giant dance floor right in front of the stage was full of happy dancing people who could feel the love and let their bodies move to the rhythm of the outdoor reggae concert.

    Beautiful Night!…Great Show!

    by RD on 7/18/23

Open Massive dance floor was perfect for UB40 and Inner Circle. Made for a great vibe through out the evening. Loved the hits along with the new stuff from UB40. More classic reggae R&B shows would be awesome for us older folks.

The UB40 concert 2023 was off the hook.! It was so amazing to see old school reggae performances and my all time favorite child hood music. We enjoyed the show and we hope they can come back every year. The best concert ever! ♥️

    Excellent show!

    by Vitofritobandito on 7/18/23

I have been following UB40 since their debut album back in the late 70's I've been fortunate to see the band 5 times since 1984 tour in the paramount theater. Although they have had some changes I was really impressed by the new singer and other new members of the group I was really thrilled to see they added some old school songs to the set like "Sing our own Song"and "don't break my heart"and many others. As usual excellent band and show!

    UB40 - Awesome Concert - Don't Miss It!

    by Bill K. on 7/10/23

My first time seeing UB40 live in concert and I was awestruck. Saw them in Westbury, NY on 7/6/2023 with my dear wife. Each song sounded so good -- top notch musicianship and great set list. UB40 got the 60-year old me off my feet and I danced and we had a wonderful time (I never dance). THANK YOU UB40!!! Damn this group is superb -- they've aged like fine wine, like fine RED RED WINE. Go see UB40.

    More covers than original gems

by fan since the 80's on 7/10/23

Was looking forward to this show more than any other this summer (a total of 7) and travelled an hour and a half to get here. Swag table had retro "Rat in the Kitchen"shirts for sale in both black and white. So excited! Bought two since it is my wife and my favorite song. THEY DID NOT PLAY THE SONG!!! False advertising?! They did not stay true to the song "Sing our own song"and did not repeat the lyric "Amandla Awethu"We saw them in the 80s and they absolutely killed it, especially during the encore where they disappeared one at a time and then re-appeared. Blew us away! Totally disappointing this time around.

    Great night...

    by Jamie on 7/10/23

Amazing show, new lead singer been with the band for 2 years. The 2nd singer who sang all the hits had to retire due to illness. Give the new singer a chance sounds alot like the 2nd brother. Three brothers started the band, only one remains! Is the new singer better than the original no, but all of the original members are still playing, 45 years and still going! Go see them before they hang it up, thank you UB40 for making it a special night with my bae! Your music is timeless!😊

Great show. See them if you get a chance.

    by Brian on 7/10/23

I've been a UB40 fan forever and was going to see them once many years ago and was disappointed that the show was cancelled due to visa issues or something and I don't think they tour US too often, so I am thrilled that I finally got another chance. This was at a small theater in Medford MA and the sound was pretty good what you'd expect for this type venue. The performances were all top notch musicianship and sounded pretty much like they do on the recordings. The drummer still has that 80's type drum sound if you are into that. The new singer sounds EXACTLY like the original singer. I don't know where they found him but he really gets the job done. The set list was excellent, and they did pretty much all of their big hits and I was surprised that they did several songs off of my favorite album Signing Off. Yep, see them if you can.

Should have played all their hits

    by Eli on 7/10/23

While I would still recommend this concert, I was disappointed that they didn't play all their hits. They dried us for 90 minutes with this and that from their this and that albums, and left their hit songs to the very last part of the show. But... then, they didn't play all of them. It's not like they have 20 his songs, so they should have played all of their hits and, of course, play as many others as they wish. You could see how the audience was thrilled when they played their hits, so, if you are a 45 y/o band, play your hits! They didn't play "Rat in the Kitchen"and "1 in 10", for example.

    Great show, venue not great.

    by Thirsty Banker on 7/10/23

UB40 delivered all the hits. They sounded great and had the crowd up and singing along. The venue needs some improvements. Only one bar open which causes a crush when entering the venue. Also, only one set of restrooms on the main floor. If you are sitting in the balcony you’ve got to travel up and down stairs which is definitely not good for the age group that most of this venues shows target. May not attend another show here. Have been twice and no improvement. Lynn Auditorium is a similar venue but is much more patron friendly.

    UB40 CLASS ACT

    by Cmeruelo on 7/10/23

We got the VIP package which included a meet and greet after the show. We were at the very front for the whole concert and they were fantastic. New stuff old stuff. It was all great. When we met them, we talked about all sorts of stuff like regular guys. They are truly the nicest bunch of guys ever. We will definitely be seeing them again next time they’re in town. The Space at WESTBURY is a great venue to see any show. We really had a ball.

    UB45 year anniversary tour

    by EMK on 7/9/23

Glad to have gotten GA tix last minute to this show billed as UB40’s 45th Anniversary Tour. While not the exact original lineup of band members, they still sounded great with the addition of the lead singer who looks like Jude Law and sounds exactly like Ali Campbell. They played almost all the hits and a couple from their upcoming album. The venue was small and intimate, and general admission was the way to go: no way I was sitting down for even one song!

    Superb

    by Peter on 7/9/23

I have been a UB40 fan from day 1. We came all the way from Amsterdam (The Netherlands) to watch this show in New York. The music was great. The new lead singer is great. A magical evening.
