About

The Cher Show is based on the life of Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman or as her friends call her, Cher! The kid on a tricycle, vowing to be famous. The teenage phenom who crashes by twenty. The glam TV star who quits at the top. The would-be actress with an Oscar. The rock goddess with a hundred million records sold. The legend who’s done it all, still scared to walk on stage. The wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend. The woman, looking for love. The ultimate survivor, chasing her dream. They’re all here, dressed to kill, singing their asses off, telling it like it is. And they’re all the star of The Cher Show.

Featuring her beloved chart-topping hits, The Cher Show will feature a book by Rick Elice (Tony Award-winning best musical Jersey Boys), direction by Jason Moore (Tony Award-winning best musical Avenue Q), choreography by Tony Award-winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies), and orchestrations, arrangements and musical supervision by Tony Award-winner Daryl Waters (Memphis).

It's campy and over the top. Essentially, it's exactly what you want from a show about CHER.

    Cher needs work

by Honeyballs on 7/17/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

While the 3 women who star as Cher in various stages of her life are incredibly talented, the show seems to chug along as we’re asked to believe that this strong, driven woman was blown about by the vagaries of her various husbands and boyfriends. While there is a germ of truth to this story, it feels as if it dominates the play. And it’s very telling that the absolute best moment of the play is a dance sequence performed by a dazzling dancer (not specifically named in the program) while Sonny and Greg Allman croon, forgotten, in the background. This woman stops the show - and Cher is nowhere on stage. The costumes by Bob Mackie and the dance sequence are almost compelling enough to make the ticket price palatable. Almost but not quite. (There was also some major snafu with the curtain call at the end of the play on Saturday night - and it wasn’t professionally handled. Not a good last impression to leave an audience with.)

    Entertaining

by StudiousSue on 7/17/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

It was a unique approach, but I was thoroughly entertained. I would have liked more of the songs sung in entirety. The costumes were fabulous. I liked learning about Cher’s life!

    Great fun!

by Awhorn on 7/17/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The three Cher’s performances were all amazing as were Sonny and Bob Mackie! Costumes and lighting were over the top just as you’d expect...very visual show. It’s the perfect amount of camp and fun while telling her life story!

    Cher show

by Btwlks on 7/17/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Excellent show! All the actors were pheonomenal. They had her mannerisms and voice down. I could close my eyes and hear Cher.

    It was okay

by terrynstl on 7/16/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The show was okay, it had its moments. The three Cher’s harmony will be booed off stage in NYC. The show was a tad choppy at times, drag queens in the role would be fabulous!

    The beat goes on...

by RoxxyR on 7/16/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The Oriental Theater is a breathtaking marvel of beauty and excess. I rated that a 5 but would rate the play a 3/4. The Cher Show was fun, entertaining, with Fab costumes. I like that three women played Cher. They all had wonderful voices but the older Cher (Stephanie?) was incredible. She not only had the best voice, she nailed all of Cher's mannerisms and even her voice. However, it felt like it dragged at times. The piece about Rob Camaletti seemed too long. I'm sure he was an important part of her life but it didn't add that much to the play.

    Entertaining show - great costumes

by AliciaQ on 7/16/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I thought the show was good but did have some room for improvement. There were some segues that were not totally clear from one point to the next in Cher’s life. There was a dance number in the middle that was amazing but I didn’t know what it represented. Also I thought there were too many slow songs in the second half - with all Cher’s upbeat, fun music I think they could have had it be more energetic to get the audience more into it. The costumes were amazing though - and I thought all the actors and dancers were great.

    Cher Show

by TwirlerandCurler on 7/16/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The beginning was a tad slow as actors didn't seem into it. Singing and dancing began soon thereafter and everything was amazing. The three actresses that portrayed Cher are phenomenal singers; most of the dancers were awesome...some were not as great as others. The one female dancer spotlighted with the male dancers was a heck of a dancer and the choreography was fantastic. Wowza to the costuming and showing all the outfits through the years that Cher donned. I learned a lot about Cher and her life and many segments brought back great memories of the Sonny and Cher Show. The energy from the audience and Cher's many fans made the show even more exciting. Overall, a terrific show!

    Good but not great !

by Loumans on 7/16/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Should be 3 1/2 stars.....cant do 1/2s...Storyline dragged the energy out of great music, dancing and costumes.

    Fun GNO

by lesliemann on 7/15/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I went to the show for the costumes by Bob Mackie!! They did not disappoint. I loved the way the story was told from the POV of three Chers who all have incredible voices that seem like Cher herself is actually in the room. The show focuses on Cher's life story and success in the 70s. This is why this show is geared towards an older audience. 50-60's age group. I was really surprised that her BELIEVE tour was not addressed during the show. That is one of the most successful tours on the planet and it was glossed over. Great show, Great GNO, but seeing it just once is all good.

    The Cher Show is amazing!

by lmbklb on 7/15/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I loved it! It was a great show and really followed her life story. All the actresses that played her at various ages had her mannerism down pat. The actor that played Sonny sounded just like him.

    It was SPECTACULAR

by Chershow on 7/15/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I went in with an open mind after hearing bits & pieces that the show needed to be tweaked. Well, if it did it was. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cher Show. The 3 Chers werent confusing to me at all as others pointed out. Different phases in her life. Whats so confusing about that? The voices of all were just wonderful. The costumes were by Bob Mackie so of course they were wonderful as well. I remembered some of them from the TV show. Cher would come out all covered up & THEN....a barely there awesome dress. A look at a her hard life of love & love lost. Songs were great left me wanting more but that would have been way over time. I enjoyed the show & recommend it.

    Worth going

by Jsirb on 7/15/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Really well done review of Chers rise to fame and her life in music. The actresses playing her really got her voice, it was a joy to hear them. And even tho I lived thru the era of Cher I still learned a bit as well. I would go again!

    Fun Evening

by Suzie1111 on 7/15/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

If you love Cher you will love this show. The performers that play young Cher, middle aged Cher, and mature Cher, were excellent. The Sonny performance was right on ... sounded and acted just like Sonny Bono. Aside from the performances, the play dragged in spots. It needs a bit of tightening up before broadway. That is why I gave it 4 and not 5 stars Otherwise a great fun evening.
