About

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together over a hundred of the world's foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists. It also boasts the world's only full orchestra that embraces both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is distinguished by its conscious effort to remain independent of China's communist regime, which has abused and impoverished the arts for decades. It is proud to thus include members who practice Falun Gong. The company aspires to create original performances that not only entertain, but also more deeply educate, enrich, and inspire. The company's rich repertory is drawn from the pages of history, universal themes, and the world around us. All choreography and music performed are original.

    Not as Good as Expected

by Laurah on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The women dancers were beautiful and wonderful to watch and the men's acrobatic moves were impressive. We were expecting the whole program to be like that. However, that made up only about half the program at best. The rest consisted of the men dancing (not that great), some plays, and two (horrible) singers. Our party of 6 were all disappointed.

    ShenYun

by KAM on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Program was a bit too long. The dancer's were spectacular and the costumes were just what I expected from seeing it advertised. I did not think much of the message the singers were putting forth.

    Not what I expected.

by Shari E. on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

My expectation from the marketing material and the high ticket price was to see a professional show combining Chinese ballet with Cirque de Soleil-like acrobatics. This production was a propaganda-filled disappointment. The animation integration of the screen was so poor that it made me laugh out loud. I did enjoy the classic Chinese dance for both the men and women. The orchestra was very good although much too quiet and the soloists for piano and Chinese instruments were wonderful. The singing was painful. Some of the costumes were gorgeous but many looked like they were designed for a high school play. I left wondering how this show is still in production from 2006.

    More than expected

by HunterSoul on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

We were lucky to have front row seats. We could see the faces of the phenomenal orchestra and watch as they beat on the drums or use the bow of the violin or plucked on the strings of the harp or Chinese instruments Or pursed their lips for the flute or other wind instruments. Just feet from them we could see the phenomenal athleticism and beautiful smiles of the Chinese dancers. The host and the hostess working hand-in-hand kept a smile on our faces. It was professional, colorful, melodic, and I love the storytelling behind each of the scenes. The two solo artists and the accompanying pianist were wonderful to listen to. To know that they change up the routine every year, even though they might come back to the same City leaves me wanting more.

    It was ok.

by Thundermn on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I went to the show to see the costumes and the dance but felt that there were way too many political overtones which detracted from it.

    Venue was great

by SherStPete on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

This show was not what I had expected. I found it to be a bit religious, which is not a bad thing. I expected more aerial during the performance, however the backscreen was a very nice effect. The costumes were pretty on the women & I loved the way they flowed across the floor. This is a show i would not see again.

    A magical evening

by Rich on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Shen Yun was a very athletic event. I did not expect that. The performance was extremely beautiful. Not only did we have a performance on stage, but we also had a three-dimensional video background which became the performers on stage. The coordination between the background and the performance was an absolute delight to behold. We had a wonderful day and evening. Shen Yun was the frosting on the cake. The only reason that I didn't give a five-star rating is because I was unable to clearly understand what the narrators said. Even though I was using hearing aids, I couldn't hear what they said.

Worth seeing once - Terrible audience behavior

by Showgoer007 on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

This was my first time seeing the show and the technical aspect of the dancing and acrobatics was truly incredible. The visual aspects of the costumes and props had some really beautiful moments. The singers and specialty musicians were incredible. Some of the stories were…. Odd, and the computer/projection effects for the background were almost distracting in a way that did not enhance the show. The disrespectfulness of the audience was unbelievable. The amount of talking, getting up and down all throughout the entire show, leaving before it was finished, leaving their trash behind was just embarrassing. The show was worth seeing once. Essentially it was the same dancing on repeat and just a little bit too long, but the artists are truly talented.

    Repetitious

by GG on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The colorful costumes were beautiful, the performers graceful, and the backdrop screen was very clever. However, the dancing was repetitive after the first few. Would not go again.

Incredible dancers, beautiful backdrops, colorful costumes

by Serenity on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

One cannot deny the talent of the dancer, who seemed to float through the air. The "interactive"backdrops reminded me of a country filled with beautiful mountains, lakes, and architecture. The costumes were colorful, and enhanced the grace and beauty of the female dancers. Overall, I preferred watching the lovely ladies, with their various "group"formations. Some of the story-telling performances reminded me of the old "keystone cops"shows, and the music during that period was too repetitive.

    Spectacular - Beautiful - Engaging

by WIMNDEEC on 5/7/24Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The show (and venue) were outstanding. I had interest in the past but decided not to attend due to the high prices. But when I saw Shen Yun was in town again, I looked into tickets and found they were reasonable. I am SO glad I did. What an amazingly beautiful show. I loved the many and varied stories told in music, dance, with added interactive projections that help to convey so much more detail in each story. The programs include a synopsis of each story and I am so grateful for that. As I read through it the days after the show, it helped me recall each vignette with great detail. The show was so much more than I imagined. The live orchestra with western and Chinese instruments combining to make the sounds unique and ethereal; the pure athleticism and refinement of the dance, the vibrant and historically accurate costumes (if the program is to be believed, and I have no reason not to believe it). I learned the show is created anew each year, including stories, dance, music, costumes, etc. It is more impressive when you consider the amount of work and dedication that consistently goes into each year's production. I also learned the show is created in the United States and includes stories of China's past prior to the communist revolution. This means the creators enjoy freedom of expression. I don't have to weigh my conscience over the risk of supporting an oppressive regime and the potential oppression of artists with my ticket purchase. In every way, the show was a beautiful and soul-enhancing experience. I would love to return to see Shen Yun in future years and I highly recommend the experience.

More of an interpretive dance some what disappointed

by Alta35 on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

My anticipation for Shen Yun was fueled by glowing reviews, despite the somewhat steep ticket prices. I anticipated an immersive blend of visual spectacle and auditory delights. However, my experience fell short of expectations. Instead of being swept away by a grand production, it felt more akin to a high school theater performance, complete with narration and interpretive dance. Adding to the disappointment was the lack of consideration from fellow attendees. Loud chomping and bag rustling from those indulging in snacks detracted from the performance. The venue should have either prohibited noisy snacks or provided designated eating areas away from the performance spaces. Furthermore, I had hoped for a live showcase of talents such as drum performances and original symphonies, rather than relying heavily on video presentations. While the performance was decent, it failed to justify the hefty price tag.

    Underwhelmed

by Greta on 5/7/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The dancing - when they danced - was incredible. Well trained, fit, disciplined dancers. I didn't like that the show was a series of vignettes, out of chronological order. For the price of the tickets, I expected more. I've been to several shows so far this year; my favorite, for value, entertainment and comfort, was Cirque de Soleil.
