New England Patriots History

Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the New England Patriots were the eighth and final franchise to join the American Football League in 1959. After joining the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, they changed their name and moved to Foxborough in 1971.

Producing some of the league's greatest players — from AFL MVPs Gino Cappelletti and Jim Nance, to future Pro Football Hall of Famers John Hannah, Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett — the Patriots have fielded more than a few successful teams. The 1978 team won 11 games while setting a then-NFL rushing record that stood for 40-plus years with 3,165 yards. That year, the team's 11 wins tied the franchise record and earned the Patriots their second division title in team history and an opportunity to host their first home playoff game.

On Jan. 21, 1994, Kraft bought the Patriots from St. Louis native James Orthwein, keeping the franchise in New England. The Patriots went to the playoffs four out of the next five seasons and have become a modern-era dynasty, recording more than 20 seasons with at least 10 wins since Kraft purchased the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots dominated the division from 2001 to 2018, making nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six championships.

The Patriots are currently tied with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six. The Patriots hold the NFL record for the most Super Bowl appearances with 11.

The Patriots’ home-field success has helped power a dynasty that has consistently propelled the Patriots into the playoffs. Since 2002, Gillette Stadium has hosted 23 playoff games, including seven AFC Championship Games.

    Gillette Stadium is a Blast!!

by jollimonn on 10/25/17Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

The seats are high, but great view to all field and screens in each end zone. Space is fine. Ramps to the upper level were fine and the 25 stairs was okay, but best was regular price and not some stubhub sale where you pay 3 times the cover price. Overall, it was a blast. The fans were excited, the view was awesome, and the experience was great.

by Comishiner on 9/27/17Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Game was great, Brady led comeback win. SO disappointed that some patriot players would not stand for national anthem. Went to first 3 pats games this season. No more for me. That is my right.

    Problem with the backpacks

    by Cdias89 on 9/4/17Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

The game was awesome, the stadium is huge! The problem was in the entrance. As travelers, we were with our backpacks, as we usually are (with clothes, cameras, documents...) Despite of knowing that many places in the USA have the policy of no backpacks allowed, we never thought that the Gillette Stadium complex (with hotels, many restaurants and shoppings) wouldn't provide a luggage store. Also, any of the estabilishments accepted to stay with the backpacks during the game. Eventually, after walking around for almost 40 minutes, we find a nice guy that stayed with the backpacks for us and we could see the game. We understand the concern about terrorism and other terrible crimes, but maybe there could be a review about the no backpacks policy to make things easier for the foreign people like us, that support the New England Patriots around the world.

We went to the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was our first time attending an NFL game and it was AMAZING! So looking forward to going again and hopefully it won't take us 20 years to do it. Just the experience alone with worth it.

The players-the Cheerleaders-the employees and most important the Crowds of people it has attracted is testimony. What a Day!! Thank you Security, methods-personnel and results! Good game, bad customer service

    by tc7777 on 12/27/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

A few of the handlers employed by the Patriots, as with other games, were atrocious in their conduct with customers. Some of these Patriot employees treat people like they are the enemy. Because of the sky high seating it was necessary to bring binoculars to the game. Despite having used these same binoculars at prior Patriot games, the lead security person declared the carrying case as unsuitable for entry to the stadium because it was too large. This bag folded up to the size of two decks of cards. I was given the choice of walking 10-15 minutes back to my car in the pouring rain or surrendering the carrying case. I asked to speak with the supervisor and she declared that she was the supervisor. She was rude and treated me like I was a drunken hooligan. I don't drink alcohol and am a veteran of the U.S. Army. I have not been treated this rudely since basic training. The joke of it all is that the security screening is a complete joke with only superficial measures being used to detect potentially harmful objects. Issue #2: while seated in the 'alcohol free' section, we were routinely assaulted by loud mouthed people using abundant profanity. There were no ushers near our section to respond to the situation. I've been going to Patriot games since the 1960's, and the worst part of the experience is routinely having to deal with just a few ignorant/rude employees of the Patriots before, during and after the game.
