New England Patriots History

Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the New England Patriots were the eighth and final franchise to join the American Football League in 1959. After joining the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, they changed their name and moved to Foxborough in 1971.

Producing some of the league's greatest players — from AFL MVPs Gino Cappelletti and Jim Nance, to future Pro Football Hall of Famers John Hannah, Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett — the Patriots have fielded more than a few successful teams. The 1978 team won 11 games while setting a then-NFL rushing record that stood for 40-plus years with 3,165 yards. That year, the team's 11 wins tied the franchise record and earned the Patriots their second division title in team history and an opportunity to host their first home playoff game.

On Jan. 21, 1994, Kraft bought the Patriots from St. Louis native James Orthwein, keeping the franchise in New England. The Patriots went to the playoffs four out of the next five seasons and have become a modern-era dynasty, recording more than 20 seasons with at least 10 wins since Kraft purchased the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots dominated the division from 2001 to 2018, making nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six championships.

The Patriots are currently tied with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six. The Patriots hold the NFL record for the most Super Bowl appearances with 11.

The Patriots’ home-field success has helped power a dynasty that has consistently propelled the Patriots into the playoffs. Since 2002, Gillette Stadium has hosted 23 playoff games, including seven AFC Championship Games.

    Good stadium, great game

    by vistor2bostonFromSeattle on 11/16/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Pats fans host a good party. Gillette Stadium is an awesome place to catch a game with good sight lines and passionate fans. Transportation to and from isn't perfect, with the drive into the field being hectic (but that's hard to avoid with 67K piling into the arena) and the single train back to Boston a long, crowded ride.

    Welcome Home Brady!!! AMAZING

by PatsfanfromBmore on 10/19/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

I'm a patriots fan from Baltimore. This was my first visit to Gillette Stadium and the atmosphere was electrifying. The fans were amazing. They really love sports, football and the Patriots. You could feel the energy and how much Tom Brady was missed when he ran out that tunnel for the first time this season. I had so much fun interacting with the fans in my section. It was like family. Trying to get tickets when we play the Seahawks and Ravens. BRADY BRADY BRADY. Let's go Patriots

Slow Start - Great Ending - Welcome Back Brady

    by Cartier11 on 10/19/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

It was a perfect sunny and warm day for tailgating which is a great way to start the day. The stadium filled up fast - everyone just waiting to Welcome Back Brady. It was kind of slow only 3-0 at the beginning. But after 1/2 time it was the Patriots as we know them. They kicked butt and gave us fans plenty to cheer about. I think I was one of the last ones to leave the stadium. It was such a great day to remember. Go Pat's.....

I go to the patriots games as often as I can. just want to say even though this game was the worst ever. Gillette is my "happy place"! I want to state that the seats that I ordered thru ticketmaster were awesome. I had no issues with ordering the tickets. I received them in the mail well in advance. I have used ticketmaster in the past for other games and I was always pleased with the service you provide. thank you

    New England was unstoppable

    by Mannypr83 on 9/25/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

First football game I attend: It was pretty awesome to see all the things going on. The game was enjoyable although I did arrive 1.5 hours before the start and payed $40 for parking and still had to walk a long while to get to the stadium. The other thing was that after I arrived had to turn around because they didn't allow carrying backpacks inside. I had to waste like 30 mins walking back and forth because I was not going to throw my backpack in the trash can. I attended Fenway park 2 days earlier on a Red Sox vs Yankees game. A much better quality game and brought my backpack with absolutely no issues.

    Who needs Brady!

by Fanzone on 9/25/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Second visit to Gillette stadium, really enjoyed the whole event again. Not a Pats fan but would recommend seeing a game here to any sports fan. Facilities are excellent, views are great from any level. Getting to the stadium from Boston is a bit of a hike but atmosphere on train was part of the whole experience.

This was my first in person Patriots game and it was AWESOME! Traffic was expected and actually not that bad. Tailgaiting a blast and the seats were as expected. Pretty high up but we still had a great view.

    A Fun Night Out

    by Cat5678 on 8/24/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Patriots tickets are ridiculously expensive so going to a pre-season game is a nice way to see the game at a more affordable price. Parking prices, however, are exorbitant. Forty dollars to park a car for a couple of hours is insane! It doesn't even cost that much to park in Boston.

    Getthedetails

    by Outoftowner2016 on 8/21/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

The stadium and area the stadium is great! My son is a Patriots fan and the game was good. Now some helpful details to know about the process and getting yo and leaving the game. 1) had to call Ticketmaster to get the game tickets emailed to me, the eticket link on the email confirmation did not work. 2) found out the hard way that Gillette stadium does not allow taxis to access the stadium during an NFL game. There is a commuter rail train from Boston that runs to and from the game, but it's one shot there and one shot back. We took the train to Mansfield and took a taxi to the stadium, the driver dropped us off in a residential area and says it was closer to walk a path through the woods than to go around to the stadium with traffic. The driver could of told us the real reason he wasn't going to the stadium, but the walk was short and we could see the stadium where he dropped us off. We left the game in time to catch a taxi back to the train depot, that's where the truth came to light. U asked the exit gate attendant, where do I catch a taxi, he said over to the right by the #5 sign, we walked there and no taxis. Walked back to the entrance and asked another person and they said we had to walk a mile to a McDobalds to find a taxi. I said you're kidding, right? We started walking in the direction of where the McDonalds was supposed to be, you cannot see it from the stadium. I also got on the phone with a local cab company and that's when I finally got the whole sad story. We walked to a Gulf station and then had to walk down a side street about100 yards to finally see a single taxi. Amazingly enough we still got to the train station with 2 minutes to spare!

by Andycads on 8/15/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

The whole event from booking tickets (changing tickets as well) to end was easy. Booked tickets from uk (different website and account) had to change seats and online chat couldn't help more so not to cost me extra money to phone and change tickets, emails kept me updated on any changes and how to use the mobile tickets. The event was easy to and from get to on public transport and entrance to event was easy the place is amazing excellent venue with shops and food outlets to keep you busy before the game

    Expensive and Inconvenient, but Awesome!

by Rocketdoug on 7/17/16Gillette Stadium - Foxborough, MA

I've been a Patriots fan since the Boston Patriots days when they played in Harvard Stadium. Gillette is a nightmare. The parking is awful (and expensive), getting tickets is difficult (and expensive). A beer and a burger will cost at least $20. It pisses me off to know that they charge more for a single bottle of water than my wife pays for an entire case. Drunk fans are always getting into fights or puking all over the place, and the concession area looks like a packed stockyard during breaks, but if you're a true fan you MUST go at least once a year. If you're not a diehard fan, you're too wimpy to hold your own in a pushy crowd, or you have small children, take the money you would have spent on tickets, parking and concessions (a MINIMUM of $600 for a family of 4) and buy yourself a nice big screen TV.

    Awesome day

by Zukester on 12/23/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

All around great day. Got game tickets as a Christmas present for my kids. My daughter had never been to a NFL game before and is a HUGE Brady fan. She loved it. She lives in CA and was happy to finally be surrounded by Pats fans during a game.
