Charming and Funny
by Will on 4/27/24Orpheum Theater - New OrleansThis was my first experience with David Sedaris. I’ve not read his books nor watched his interviews. My girlfriend, however, has been a super fan of his since the 90’s. This trip to see him began as a gift to her, but ended up being just as much a gift to myself. Mr. Sedaris’ voice and manner of speaking are disarming and endearing. His sense of humor is both subtle and sharp, and he doesn’t shy away from the controversial or the offensive. He doesn’t use either of those things merely for comedic effect or a cheap laugh. He’s just refreshingly honest and open. He doesn’t soften his own edges or hide his own vulnerability. His essays took me back to my own childhood, and made me nostalgic for my own memories and experiences. Afterwards, he signed his books for over two hours until everyone who stood in line had a chance to meet him. The line wasn’t that long, but Mr. Sedaris took a very generous amount of time with every visitor, truly engaging with them and refusing to let them go until he had connected with them on some personal level. Those few minutes were the highlight of the evening. Cannot wait to get home and begin reading my first David Sedaris book.
