    More singing

by Lindasue on 5/25/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

The performers were incredible. When I bought tickets for a musical, I thought there would be more singing. Too much talking but great.

    Incredibly Boring

by Dr. J on 5/24/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

While I was not expecting anything on the same level as Hamilton, this play was absolutely boring. The performers did an outstanding job, considering what little depth they had to work with. There was an attempt to create a sense of anticipation of whether or not the Declaration of Independence would be signed by the deadline, July 4th, with all in agreement. No fireworks, just fizzle. I kept nodding off.

    A Pleasant Surprise!

by DAB on 5/24/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I wasn't sure what to expect from this musical. The first act didn’t have as much music...the dialog got a little boring...but then...I'm not a history enthusiast. Much more music in the second act. The women were amazingly talented! Incredible singing voices, and SO much script to memorize...it truly was delightful!

    What a night

by Steve on 5/23/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

This cast of all women was the most amazing display of talented performers I have ever seen in 40 years of going to the theater. I pray it comes to FRESNO where we can take our entire family to celebrate the story of the musical and the talent of these wonderful women.

A super fan of this show leaves a little disappointed

by 1776 super fan on 5/23/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I saw the movie of 1776 in the '70s as a 2nd grader living an hour from Philadelphia and immediately fell in love with it. I had even been on a field trip to Independence Hall, where most of this musical is set. I listened to the soundtrack so much I memorized all the songs, and over the years I've probably seen the play and movie maybe 20 times. I was super excited for this performance since it's the most "professional" I've seen, being a touring Broadway production, and also because of the diverse and female, trans, and non-binary cast. However, I was disappointed, mostly because of two things. 1)The choreography is lackluster. The movie and other stage productions have some delightful choreography sequences, especially in "But, Mr. Adams," and "He Plays the Violin," but this production did not take advantage of those opportunities. I've seen student productions that had better choreography than this one. 2) The John Adams character felt miscast. Adams is supposed to be forceful, even a bit blustery. Gisela Adams may be a fine actress, but her body language felt tentative and not appropriate for this character —less blustery and more blustering. Also, her singing voice tended to get swallowed up in the venue I was at. In contrast, Liz Mikel, who played Benjamin Franklin, was superb, and her voice carried. I saw an all-girl student production at the JCC in San Diego that carried this show off with aplomb, so I was really looking forward to another opportunity to see women embody these characters. Most of them were fine, but Adams is the cornerstone of the show and in almost every scene, so this miscasting, IMO, took some spark out of the show. One last thing — the image projected on the screen at the end of the show was a mystery to both me and my two companions. None of us could figure out what it was supposed to be. Looked like kegs of some sort. Was it supposed to be the kegs of saltpeter? Or kegs of Molasses referenced in "Molasses to Rum"? Whatever message it was supposed to be sending was lost on me and my two friends.

Musical numbers lacked catchy melody. didn't leave humming

by wow... well.... on 5/23/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Seriously... this show was terribly overpriced for the quality. The dramatic acting at times was moderately interesting. The songs were weak. Not gonna be humming any of them. The music was weak. The tongue in cheek humor lacked whit. The set was terribly boring. The cast lacked any memorable characters. The story was kinda interesting but really just seemed to highlight the end fighting during those long tough days. very forgettable performance. Sorry for such a poor review but I've seen Junior High Plays with better .... well.... better everything!

    Artistic, educational and fun

by Woody N on 5/22/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

The voices of the ensemble were incredible. This show has multiple stars, though you may have never heard of them. Fun for the family as well as for date night.

    Bring your daughters here

    by bostonfern on 5/20/23

Wonderful and invigorating play. This all-female cast playing powerful men brings huge energy and dynamics. It's rare to see women act with such power... from beginning to end. For women whose power that has been oppressed, it's exciting to see women who act with such power. The acting is excellent too.

    Highly entertaining

by Katerina S on 5/19/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

Better than expected. Music is not all that memorable, but the cast was outstanding. Love that most cast members have a solo, and they are all great singers.

    Really Boring

The acting didn’t save the boring story and the unmemorable songs. Walked out of the performance mid way.

    Disappointing Day

by KB on 5/18/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We sat near the middle of Row N. While we could see just fine, the terrible acoustics allowed us to know people were singing, but we couldnt understand the words at all. I wished I understood sign language ! Also, it took so long to hear even one song, I checked my program to see if we were watching a musical or not . I did appreciated the actors efforts and the montage of history near the end, but I wish I had saved my money. Very disappointing !!

    Verbatim from the original play

by Mjn on 5/17/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I really enjoyed that peek into American history. The gender switch worked except Rutledge and Dickinson. Those actresses had lovely voices but they didn’t have the necessary depth and richness of true baritones.

    Too Long

by Stephanie on 5/17/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Beautiful ensemble, beautiful voices. Too few songs, too much talking and the performance was WAY too long. People were leaving half way through the show. They could have cut at least 45 minutes off of it. I made myself stay until the end but was tempted the last hour and a half to leave.

    I was very disappointed

by Buddy on 5/17/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The characters should match the history, Benjamin, John and Thomas were white male. The performance was terrible and not the level of a Broadway show. If I knew that all the cast were female I would not have purchased the ticket.

    Amazing Voices!

by CJ on 5/17/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

What an evening! From the very start the cast poured their hearts and souls into the characters they portrayed! The songs were sung with very rich voices! We had an amazing time!

The all female cast wasn’t appealing to me. It couldn’t suspend my disbelief and get into it. It just didn’t work!

    Loved it!

by L. B. on 5/17/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Very powerful. LOVED the diverse talented cast. The video during The Egg made my daughter say "I've never felt so patriotic!". Molasses to Rum to Slaves was particularly powerful and well done. I wish there had been an actual window on the set for the opening number ("Somebody open up a window"). I think if you had never seen this before it might have been hard to understand the words and get some of the jokes, but still would have been overall enjoyable and impactful.

    Yeah No

by Tracy S on 5/16/23San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I mean No. It was a musical and there was barely any music or singing and when there was it was just meh. I mean we all know the story right? It's 1776. But it was convoluted at best. I had high hopes for this. I loved that it was all women playing the parts of our founding fathers. And mostly lesbians, trans etc folks. But that can't make up for a meh performance. Hubs and I left at intermission. I have NEVER done that at a concert, movie, musical, symphony etc. No wonder we got 2 emails offering GREAT TIXS AT A GREAT PRICE!! Should have known.
