About

What will it take to get two dozen powerfully passionate, exceedingly complicated, and all-too-human individuals to settle their differences, while they hold the very future of a nation in their hands? American Repertory Theater at Harvard University/Roundabout Theatre Company's new production of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, 1776, is a tuneful, witty, and constantly surprising reexamination of a pivotal moment in American history from directors Jeffrey L. Page (Violet) and Diane Paulus (Waitress). 1776 comes to Chicago with the celebrated Broadway cast that reflects multiple representations of race, gender, and ethnicity. You may never think about our country--who we are and why--the same way again.

The cast was very talented, the singing was great. I had a little trouble following the story at first, but it became clear as the show moved on. Thanks for a good time.

    Comforting and Surprising!

by Theater Lover on 3/14/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I’ve loved the story and music of 1776 for a long time, so I knew it would be a great show. The casting twist and the modern touches like the video montage were thrilling! The actor portraying Richard Henry Lee was probably my favorite—they were so sassy! Every actor was remarkable and well-cast. I would see this again, anytime, anywhere!

My personal friend from Dallas, Liz Mikel, made it extra special. Loved the beautifully maintained theater as well.

    Required Viewing

by MarcyJC on 3/13/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

From the pre-curtain acknowledgments to the final bow, this re-imagined 1776 performance exploded with powerful voices both celebratory and poignant. A must see for today’s Hamilton Era audiences, though the viewer will be advised not to expect to compare the two for their aims are different though lofty and challenging.

by Luanne on 3/11/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Took me a minute to get characters lined up in my head but this was a great performance! If in 1776 some the forefathers had stuck to their ideas of freedom for all-men of color and ladies how different would the trials of today be

This play does not warrant diversity

by Proud American on 3/11/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Disappointed that that the play was misrepresented by using an all female cast whether gender specific or some other form of gender ID. The play had many inaccuracies and made many assumption on what the writer wanted to convey. Finally the online descrition should be more specific as to the alterations that are made to history.
