About

What will it take to get two dozen powerfully passionate, exceedingly complicated, and all-too-human individuals to settle their differences, while they hold the very future of a nation in their hands? American Repertory Theater at Harvard University/Roundabout Theatre Company's new production of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, 1776, is a tuneful, witty, and constantly surprising reexamination of a pivotal moment in American history from directors Jeffrey L. Page (Violet) and Diane Paulus (Waitress). 1776 comes to Chicago with the celebrated Broadway cast that reflects multiple representations of race, gender, and ethnicity. You may never think about our country--who we are and why--the same way again.

    Good show /bad seats

by Ronnie on 3/11/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

We liked the new production of the show 1776. The humor was fun and the cast was talented. It definitely was an updated version. The all female cast blended in and the lines reflected the value of women . The portrayal of the slave issue was well done but the slave dance seemed a little out of place. Unfortunately, we paid full price for top price tickets and our view was obstructed by the speakers inside the proscenium. This is the first time I have used ticket master for tickets as I needed additional tickets for the show.

    Inspiring, Relevant 1776 Performance

by Will on 3/10/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I first experienced the musical 1776 on Broadway in 1970. I was thrilled to be in the audience for this 2023 production where the music and lyrics are as thrilling and the acting as strong as it was 53 years ago! The lighting, sound, and costumes were exciting and delightful! The all-female cast complimented, indeed underscored, the sentiment of democracy as a dynamic, forward-moving process, susceptible to human error, and still, urgently, worth fighting for!

    Not entertained

by Mark on 3/9/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

We didn’t enjoy this at all. There wasn’t any real entertainment value in the production. Felt more-so like an unabridged version of cspan that just kept dragging on. Also, there was a 30 minute period without any singing or dancing. That just doesn’t fit a musical. I wish I had my 2 hours back.

    Good voices and acting

by Farwalker on 3/9/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Ben Franklin was great. Thomas Jefferson was very good. John Adams grew on me and improved. The all female cast did not detract from the show.

    Better than Hamilton!

by CA on 3/7/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I loved Hamilton and Six. But this is now my favorite of the three. It is powerful, even moved me to tears a couple of times. It an awesome portrayal of our American history - it should be mandatory for all junior high school students as they study the Constitution. I strongly recommend and encourage everyone to see 1776!

    Disappointing

by Joe on 3/7/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Since the show featured a cast of women and non-binary folx, we anticipated the music and script was "refreshed" with a more contemporary bent. Sadly, this was not the case. While we were tempted to leave at intermission (as many around us did), we stayed out of respect for the cast. Many of them had excellent voices. The show itself just needed an update.

So great to see 1776 live!

by Mattkied on 3/7/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I love 1776 one of my favorite musicals and cherished this opportunity to see it live. Performances were great and staging creative. Only hang up was on some of the music direction-they updated some of the song arrangements and some of the updates were clunky. Also, some of the more complicated sections of the music were not conducted properly causing timing issues (i.e. ending section of cool cool considerate men, random new accapella sections of molasses to rum to slaves, etc). There was also a very out of tune trombone. Overall a must see!!

    More singing

by Joe Joe on 3/7/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I thought the dialogue between the characters was too long and more singing, humor or dancing would have taken this show to another level.

    EXCELLENT

by NATE on 3/7/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Like Hamilton, 1776 gave me a better understanding or depiction of that time. It had a whimsical approach to make it less threatening to process when it came to race. Also, show how women were the force in providing independence to this country, and having women play roles made it just as entertaining. Thank you

    Liberty and Justice for All?

by SDB on 3/6/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

1776 was very enlightening. I loved the experience of a diverse - all female cast. Most importantly, I appreciated learning about the birthing of the Declaration of Independence and how slavery was impacted by that document. American history books need to be rewritten to tell the WHOLE truth about America - not just "America the Beautiful. Talk about the ugly so that ignorance does not continue to perpetuate hate.

    1776 bust

by the chef on 3/5/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

The first act was good. The second act was very boring and anti climatic. Instead of some patriotic song after signing the Declaration of Independence the play ended. I would not recommend to anyone

    Great Piece of History

by Angel G on 3/5/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

What a wonderful production of 1776 with an ALL woman-cast. My six year old daughter and I - LOVED the performances of the actresses that played John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. If you love history as much as we do go see this wonderful play and performances! MUST SEE!!!!!

    Amazing! A Must see!

    by KC1756 on 3/4/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This musical was absolutely wonderful! The casting was gender expansive and it helped elevate the story for a modern age. I had a smile on my face and was in awe the entire production. The main actors who play Adams, Franklin, and Jefferson had such a wonderful chemistry. Rarely in such an ensemble cast do you feel every actor on stage has a chance to shine, but not in this case. Every character felt unique and independent. As soon as the show ended I asked my friend if we could see it again before it leaves. It was truly marvelous!

    Entertaining & Unique Revival

by DonnaO on 3/3/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

As a significant fan of 1776 (my favorite musical, that I have seen mutiple productions of including the original Broadway version and the movie more times than I care to count), I came to this production with a high bar for it to meet. And I was not disappinted. It took a while to get used to the different arrangements of some of the songs (presumably to accommodate voices that sang ranges other than the songs were written for), but the show rose to the challenge of maintaining the spirit of the original (& every other revival) while bringing a fresh take to it. It's a different type of musical, very few dance numbers & not the constant songs like you may be used to. Lots of drama (spoken as well as sung), plus a fair amount of humor (spoken not sung) which this production plays up more than most (presumably to appeal to a broader audience?). Cast was excellent, especially given that some from the Broadway production had moved onto other (& typically larger) roles. Run, don't walk to this production before the 2nd Continental Congress closes their session.....

    Too long

by Doc on 3/3/23CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I appreciated the work done, but it needed to be cut down. Females playing these characters were lost on me.
