About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

    Great show

by Mitch on 3/2/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

I attend very few shows like this but, ever since I discovered Diana Krall in the '90s I said I would definitely go see her if she performed reasonably close to my home. Greensboro is only and hour away and the Tanger Center is a fantastic venue for a show like this. Diana didn't disappoint and was every bit as good as I expected her to be. I would love to see her perform along with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.

    Relaxed Jazzy evening

by NCDude on 3/2/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Lovely performance by Diana. Only her and a piano. I was expecting a jazz ensamble group for accompaniment, but it turned out to be very upclose and personal evening with her interpretations on the piano and her sultry voice. Thank you for a nice and relaxed jazzy performance.

    Amazing show!

by Rosangela on 3/2/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Diana Krall is very friendly to her audience. But the main thing is that he puts on a show playing the piano and singing.

You've got to love a torch singer.

by Bill B. on 3/2/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

It goes without saying that Diana Krall is a rare talent. Her voice (contralto?) has a sultry quality that evokes a range of emotions. Tanger Center is excellent for any performance but especially for concerts where the music has subtle undertones. It was the perfect venue for Diana Krall's show. I wish she had played longer and also would have liked to she her perform "Almost Blue".

Disappointing in Greenville SC on February 26 2024

    by Agent Orange on 2/28/24

We saw Diana live in Spartanburg 15 or so years ago and she and her band were phenomenal. This time she surprisingly played solo the entire 100 minutes of her show. What happened to her band? They’d played with her on Saturday night in Knoxville and on Sunday night in Charlotte, but alas, not this Monday night. She took stage at 7:42, 12 minutes late and I loved her first song from Brigadoon, “Almost like Being in Love”. After that, the concert slide downhill, she never played a snappy fast song to snap my fingers too, everything was slower than usual, and she blended songs into medleys. She never played S’Wonderful or lots of her other well known hits. She did East of the Sun and West of the moon as her encore and in mid concert O Canada segueing into A Case of You. She also played L-O-V-E. My wife, the couple seated behind us and another couple seated beside us thought she might be impaired. While the concert was a sell out, or close to it, I saw seven or more couples leave after the first hour. There were some forgottten lyrics. She said that her famous drummer Jeff Hamilton was backstage, but he didn’t play or make an appearance. The strangest thing was her dialogue with the audience: she kept moving papers on her piano, claiming she had hundreds of songs, what should she play? She said this several times during the concert and people started shouting out things like Play Freebird! The concert was like being in her living room while everyone was on their fourth drink and she was piddling on the piano, experimenting with.pacing, new songs, and sometimes making up lyrics on the fly. I still enjoyed the concert but I missed the band and her more uptempo songs.

    Great Show

by Paul on 2/28/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

Diana Krall is a master musician, both with her vocals and piano. I especially enjoyed hearing some of her newer songs, as well as fresh arrangements of the standards she is known for. Her bassist and drummer were outstanding as well! Don't miss her when you have the chance!

    Wonderful Show!

by TPete on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

Diana struck up a relationship with her audience immediately. A true professional! I felt like I was in her living room watching her peel off the songs and throw the sheets on the floor. Such a Lovely Soothing voice that draws you in to her style. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening with Diana and her amazing accompaniment.

    Good, Not Great!

by LH on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I have been a fan of Diana Krall for several years. I love her voice, so I was thrilled when she was in concert in Knoxville. I got tickets and drug my husband with me. She is very good, but has a very dry personality. This makes for a few odd moments and lulls in the show. Her bass player & drummer were fantastic. I’m glad I went but I would not go again, once was enough! That said, I would still recommend seeing her if you’re a fan!

    Good but lacking

by Ktrek on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I never thought that Diana Krall would come to Knoxville, TN but she did. The show was scheduled for 7:30 but she wouldn't take the stage until close to 7:45 and she ended by 9:30. Her setlist was fine but there were moments when you couldn't understand what she was saying. She hardly interacted with the audience at all and kind of seemed like she was going through the motions and possibly had been drinking. Her accompanying bass player and drummer were very good. However, on one number either they were out of time with her or she was with them for about 30 seconds. It seemed out of character but stuff happens in live shows. Personally, I would have like to have seen Krall push the boundaries a little more instead of playing it safe but I guess at this stage of her career she's not interested in that so much as collecting a check. The house was only filled about 3/4 full so I doubt she'll be back again

    Excellent concert and venue

by Rsporsche on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

The Tennessee Theater was a great venue for Diana Krall. The concert was outstanding as were the three musicians. The bassist was very expressive and more than the usual background. The drummer created interesting spaces in between the rhythms Diana Krall was just her usual amazing

    Good but too mellow

by Drummer on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I love her music. But I don’t want to go out to a show to hear mellow wandering melodies. When she was doing the jazz standards and the American songbook , she was great. She should stop doing the other stuff. It puts us to sleep.
