About

Founded in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® was the first jazz festival in America, and has been host to numerous legendary  performances by iconic figures and contemporary geniuses. The festival continues to present musicians who follow the traditions and modern growth of New Orleans, swing, bebop and modal.  The event is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. and currently is held over the course of three days at two of Newport's historic landmarks: the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and Fort Adams State Park.

not what I expected from Newport!

by Cherbe on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

I sat about 30 rows from front center..great view but..Could hardly hear Chick Corea above the talking and instruments were not loud enough. Very low key artist but I have always loved his style piano. Second artist Gregory Porter...again not loud for a band..people were yelling to turn up volume...band sounded Jazz at times... but lyrics and singing more soul/commercial than Jazz....saxophone player was outstanding.. got there at 7:30pm left at 10pm..did not wait for last act to finish...

    Great venue, great artists

by SteveJN on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Porter,s singing was superb. Chick Corea as a warmup act was amazing. The sound was unbelievable even in the stands.

    Chic Corea was great

by Mfsnow on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

While the music was terrific and both acts are world class, we were very disappointed in how people in the audience talked as if the concert wasn't going on. The ushers need to keep people quiet and they themselves need to be quiet when bringing late arrivals to their seats. Perhaps only seat late arrivals in between songs/tunes so as not to disturb those of us that arrived on time!

    More Chick

by MaggiB on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Not enough of Chick Corea - too much Gregory Porter. Came to celebrate Chick's 75th birthday and wanted more of his, and his group's, fabulous music.

    Cash issue

by Suntush on 8/1/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

There were many vendors and music was great. Only real issue was that most vendors, food included only took cash. Fortunately had plenty on me but felt that this should be disclosed to those attending prior to the event.

    recommend with seating consideration

by ReboW on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

The set with Chick Corea, Christian McBride and Brian Blade was about 45 minutes leaving the bulk of the evening to Gregory Porter. Gregory Porter was fabulous as were his pianist, saxophonist and drummer, who were frequently given the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Newprot Jazz Fest has hit the pinacle

by NJFfan on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

George Wein and his team have done an amzaing job over the last several years turning the Newport Jazz Festival into the premier Jazz event in the world today. The sound system and staging at the Tennis Hall of Fame event on Friday night was perfect. The positioning of Chic Corea's piano, Brian Blade's drum set and Christian McBride in the center was perfect. The audience could see each musician amzaing technique as the trio wowed the audiance. Greg Porter's show was historic. His vocal and musical skills are second to none. The togetherness of his band was epic. The finess and power of the rythym section was world class. Latia's saxophone solo's and interludes where powerful. Good job George and Danny. Jazz is lucky to have you at the helm of one of the best summer concert events.

Underwhelming Friday Night @ Newport Jazz Fest

by TFBeaver on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Newport Jazz Festival has been one of our summer entertainment staples in RI for over 25 years. Friday night at the Tennis Hall of Fame is usually reserved for some of the more mainstream marquee performers (Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Dr. John, etc.). We were looking forward to some hot music from Chick Correa Trilogy only to be feted by a short set tune up for their Sat. And Sun. Performances at Fort Adams. An uninspiring performance. The main act on the card was Gregory Porter, powerful voice but an extremely disjointed set. Don't understand why he was on the card for the Jazz Festival.

    Newport night time JAZZZ

by Tbirdman on 8/1/16The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Nothing better then cool breezes and cool JAZZZ, under the roof at center court in Newport. Great venue for this type of event. The worst feature is paking but by arriving early , we got free on street spot with speedy exit from venue. The sets seemed short but in reality they were not. Chic Correa was great. My wife a student of piano enjoyed his stylings emmensely, and my sister-in-law, who knew him from years ago in Boston, got to personally meet him once again. However, we thought Gregory Porter was the real highlight. What a voice, what a group. Nonstop, a new jazz icon. All his band was the tops, especially the lady saxaphonist. You go girl. Thank for the great night.

    Absolutely Fabulous

by NewtonJazzFan1 on 8/12/15The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Both groups were wonderful. The exuberance and spontaneity of Jon Batiste's group and Chris Botti's drummer's solo were over the top.

    What a weekend!

by lindatkd on 8/11/15Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This was our first time attending the Newport Jazz Festival. I'd love to go again. We saw Michel Camilo with Conrad Herwig on Saturday and with Hiromi on Sunday- beautiful performances. Dr. John was a hoot! Loved Mike Stern.

    Location plus good Jazz= bliss

by alpfao on 8/7/15Fort Adams State Park - Newport

I like Cassandra Wilson. I like the ocean. Her performance was awfully short, but nice. Volume was good for outdoor concert. Glad to have like-minded fans around. No alcohol allowed. I think these two reasons and perhaps a few more, allowed the serious music fan not to be bothered by loud or drunken folks, and show offs. Not being a native east coast person, Newport was not easily accessible using a map. Since it is a resort town, asking locals may not be too helpful. Map your exits well. Brings quarters for toll bridges.

    Michel Camilo was my Favorite

by PhillySuzy on 8/7/15Fort Adams State Park - Newport

As a jazz musician myself, I enjoyed almost every artist I saw and I was there all three days. Highlights were Johnathan Blake with Chris Potter, Michel Camilo in both appearances (once with Herwig band doing Latin renditions of Horace Silver tunes) and when he played with Hiromi on the main stage - unbelievable! Bria Skonberg was wonderful too and brought some much needed original material to her sets (something other jazz singers can't seem to do). Can't forget get guitarist Pat Martino's organ trio either!! Worst performances? John Hollenbeck's band and singers doing old 60s/70s MOR tunes was absolutely awful and Cassandra Wilson phoned in her performance - bland, short and soulless. The festival should provide more shade tents!!!! The sun was relentless.

Reserved Seating - what a ripoff!

by JoanPell on 8/5/15Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Lets start with the positives: Fantastic music, great performances, best Lobster roll ever! I will definitely be back to the event! Negatives: we ended up at parking lot 4 which is quite a way from the event. At no time did any of the parking attendants clue us in that there is a shuttle that will take you there... So we went up and down the hills to reach the event. Signage directing you there was also quite limited so we went by the wear and tear in the lawn. Reserved seating - consists of a 24" x 24" very poor quality folding chair zip tied to the seat next to you so our arms were overlapping with our neighbors at ALL times.. Chairs were so flimsy that at 145 lbs I thought the legs were going to let go! Complete rip off! Go for the lawn seats and bring your own chair.
