About

Founded in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® was the first jazz festival in America, and has been host to numerous legendary  performances by iconic figures and contemporary geniuses. The festival continues to present musicians who follow the traditions and modern growth of New Orleans, swing, bebop and modal.  The event is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. and currently is held over the course of three days at two of Newport's historic landmarks: the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and Fort Adams State Park.

Not worth the effort. Most performances were mediocre. The jazz was too middle of the road, nothing exciting. Traffic in and out of the city is brutal. It took us three hours to get out of the city and on the highway. Missed performers I went to see because they were on a stage other than the main stage. I have been spoiled by the Saratoga Springs, NY Jazz festival. Newport Jazz Festival is off my list.

Jazz Fest was wonderful. If I had to give one suggestion it would be this. I know it appeared you were pleased that it was sold out on Saturday but everyone felt there were way to many people and it was too crowded. You could not walk around easily to the other stages, food or vendors. There are so many tents up now there is less grass for seating as well. Think about a few less ticket sales please. There were even people sitting in chairs on the paved walk way. That was a problem for emergency reasons.

    Jazz on the Water!

by TheWheel12 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

I went to the Newport Jazz Festival for the first time this year. It was an incredible experience and one that I will be repeating for years to come. The artist lineup was everything a jazz fan would want to hear. Joey Alexander, Chris Potter and his group, Jose James, Lizz Wright, Kamasi Washington, and so many more. The weather was good, (Hot on Saturday), but very good and mild on Sunday. The venue is set up with (3) stages and it is easy to go between venues to catch the acts you most want to see. I recommend this experience at least once to anyone calling themselves a fan of jazz.

    Great lineup!

by Rita4623 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This was my first time attending the fest. I sprung for the Jazz Club (tented area) tickets and was very pleased. The Jazz Club provided shelter, food and reserve seating. I floated from stage to stage and returned to the "Club" to hang out. The acts were wonderful...Joey Alexander was phenomenal as were Chick Corea, Nora Jones, Monty Alexander and Gregory Porter.

    Newport Jazz 7/30/2016

by MusicMama1 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The music was great, the venue was nice, the traffic was awful. There is only one way in and out of the park. If you plan to go next year, allow hours (yes hours plural) to get in and out.

    Edmar rules!!

by Brac123 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

We went on Sat...(got there rnd 10..) which is a recommend. Sat's lineup was great and went smoothly! One issue...WAY to crowded by 2-230...food vendor lines long and there were many shortages when u got to order...VERY crowded walkways (took 20mins to go 50 feet!!) They bragged about the fact it was the 1st sell out in a long time...need to cut sales back by 15-20%...made it miserable , @ times! Not for the claustrophobic!!!!

    EXCELLENT DAY

by LVCC2016 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Getting to Newport is a long drive but well worth it. I've been several times but this year was the most crowded. Good that I arrived early and got my favorite spot. The line up in all venues was super for a fan like me who enjoys the full range of jazz artists. My only disappointment was that Chick Corea, who was my main reason for coming, only played three pieces. Granted that he started late, but as one of the best known and respected artists and having Christian McBride with him, he should have been on stage longer. I will continue to attend.

Beautiful musical day by the bay

by Music199 on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

A beautiful - eventually after some early rain -- day to be outdoors in the sun listening to some excellent music. Because of the early poor weather, we arrived a bit late and missed early acts but caught pretty much all of Tierney Sutton's - a trip through the Joni Mitchell songbook -- and it was just wonderful. She has such a great voice and way of interpreting the Mitchell songs. Equally enjoyable were the contributions of her pianist and cellist whose playing blended seamlessly with her voice such that at times it was hard to tell whether the instruments were singing or her voice was playing. We caught a few other acts, most interesting of which was Eric Revis and Parallax. We've never experienced a trio headed up by the bassist, but he was fantastic and the music very unusual and inventive. We aren't that knowledgeable about jazz and maybe calling this experimental is not accurate, but that's how it seemed to us. And normally while we're not fans of extreme cutting edge jazz, we really liked this. Maybe most fun was the last act we saw, Galactic. Loud, lively, rhythmic New Orleans infused jazz/pop. The female vocalist, whose name we did not catch, was just amazing tremendous range, great scat, beautiful tone, and sufficient volume without any of the screaming/shouting that seems to pass for "great voice" these days.

I enjoyed the line-up of the festival last year!

by Anonymous on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This is an absolutely amazing setting for a music festival. I had a wonderful time last year and had enjoyed the diversity and line-up of artists way much better than this year. I love Hiromi's kind of music and personality. This year, the Saturday afternoon performance was really very disappointing. I was very disappointed by Chick Corea's very short performance. Also, it did not help that the audience was very nosy not focused on the show. Too many nosy people around, chatting not listening. I did not feel into it. Then, Norah Jones's style of music is not what I consider Jazz. I understand that others may have a different opinion. Hopefully, Gregory Porter's saved the afternoon and ended the afternoon in the spirit of the festival I think. I would have rated 4 or 5 stars the festival based on the experience I had last year. Also importantly, I did not feel safe and was looking for the emergency exits. I felt relieved when one organizer shared that there was one emergency exit on the right of the Fort Stage.

The performances of Chick Corea and Gregory Porter was absolutely amazing! The venue was great and the people were warm and friendly. I took delight in discussing our favorite Chick performances in the past with those sitting around me. It was a beautiful event! Can't wait 'til next year!

    Great venue but too crowded

by CRJazz on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The line up on Saturday was nothing less than spectacular. Joey Alexander was phenomenal. I loved the Hot Sardines. Chick Corea was smooth. Nora Jones stole the show. The multi stage concept was also great. However, the venue was sold out and it was way too crowded to be comfortable especially in the heat. The state police was present to open fire lanes due to the crowded conditions. People did not follow regulations for chair height and it was impossible to see if you sat on the floor. I love the Newport Jazz festival and have gone on multiple occasions, but after this past experience I will likely not return unless conditions improve.

by NatashaN on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Bad experience started with an hour long traffic jam in Newport to enter the parking lot. Most of the streets were closed by police and all the cars were channeled in on narrow street, so getting to the parking lot took us the whole hour. While a shuttle was arranged to take people from parking lot to the event, when we arrived at the location, there was no place to sit down. Because people are allowed to bring camping chairs, they occupy much more space than they actually need, and therefore if you arrive later in the day, there's nowhere to put your towel. Not only there were no spots where you can see the stage from (we were prepared for that), but there was no spot even behind the vendors. So we couldn't neither see, nor hear, which makes being there a little bit pointless. We ended up listening to Norah Jones standing in the walkway, where the firefighters were constantly asking us to move from, because you are not supposed to stand there (but again, there was NO other spot at all). Finally, leaving Newport was not easier - all the roads closed again, spent another 45 minutes trying to get to downtown Newport for dinner. If I paid more than the student ticket price, I would be outrageous. Currently, I'm just disappointed.

Galactic w/ Ms. Charm Taylor was AMAZING

by mleighton on 8/2/16Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Man, she's got a voice. And Galactic has a great Jazz/funk combo that is amazing live. We only were able to make the end of the day, but it was totally worth the couple hours we were there for this band alone. Beers are $8-9 and you're limited to the beer tent but it's on the water and you still have a good view. But we moved up for Galactic and it was magical.
