Florida Gators Men's Basketball History
The first tip-off for the Gators was in 1905, when C.J. McCoy was head coach of both the men's basketball and football programs at the school. The University of Florida was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. It wasn't until Florida built their current indoor sports facility, the O'Connell Center, in 1980, that the Gators played in their first NCAA tournament, in 1987.
Norm Sloan became the Gators' first full-time basketball coach in 1960 and made the team competitive for the first time since its founding. After six years, Sloan left the school but he returned in 1980 when the O'Connell Center opened. They made a run to the Sweet Sixteen during the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance in 1987.
The current head coach of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, Billy Donovan, coached the Gators from 1996 to 2015, and brought the program to new heights. He guided them to four Final Four appearances and two NCAA championships, in 2006 and 2007. Under Donovan, the Gators made seven straight NCAA tournaments starting in 1999.
More than two dozen Florida Gators — seven of whom are currently in the NBA — have gone on to become professional basketball players, including several NBA champions. These include three-time champion Udonis Haslem, Matt Bonner, Corey Brewer, David Lee, Marreese Speights and five-time All-Star Al Horford. The Gators have a long-running in-state rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles, and their annual contest is the only out-of-conference game for both of the two oldest college teams in the state.

Loved loved loved it. It's a must I go again it was great.
I love the new Exactec Arena. It will always be the O'Connell Center me , but whatever you call it, call it beautiful The Gators were also Spectacular!!
The venue handled an event like this very easy. Traffic in and out was easy, parking easy, we ate at the arena and generally had a great moment.
My tickets were easily obtained online. The venue matched my expectations. I was disappointed in the WVU loss, but the Gator fans were incredibly nice and did not tease. It was an EXCITING game and a pleasure to see the talent from the Big 12 and SEC.
It's always a good experience watching Florida basketball at the O'Connell Center.
The O'Connell Center was full of energy! It was great watching the Gators Men Basketball team win the first SEC game of the year.
I love going to the O'Connell center. I love being able to commune with other Gator fans and enjoy a great time with the band and the cheerleaders and the energy. The Gators won and Chiozza is coming into his own as a point guard. Egbunu had a great game too as did KeVaughn Allen. Loved it!
The expierence was great and the enviroment was good as well. I would highly reccomend going to a game at Florida.
Good game---Gators fell behind by too many---made a great comeback but FSU's Bacon was too tough down the stretch. FSU freshman are as good as advertised. Gators lose by two!!! Missed too many foul shots.
Really good game!! Love the energy in the stadium from both the fans and the teams
Great game. Amazing end of game play/basket by Gators!!
Gators played their best game of the season and gave BillyD his 500th career win. Go Gators!!!!!!
We love you Billy Donovan! Always great to be a Gator, even in a down season. We'll be back!
Gator basketball in person is always a fun event for Gator fans. There are no bad seats and one is able to see coach and team interactions not shown on TV.
Review title says it all. O'Connell Center never disappoints. Game can vary depending upon how teams play. In this case -- game was close, exciting -- a buzzer beater for a win for the Gators.
When I purchased the tickets, the seating chart did not give me the impression that I would be in the "nose bleed" section. I will be much more careful when booking tickets online in the future.
Michael Frazier's makes 2 free throws with 1.9 seconds left give the Gators the win.
AWESOME GAME :) !!!!!!!!!!!! TERRIFIC TIME AND TICKETS :) !!!!!!!!!!!!
The seat was good it was nice being able to pick the seat I wanted on Ticketmaster and getting it for face value was evening better I just wish we had won.
Not too big, not too small. Great game and entertainment in the Gators country.
