Florida Gators Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for the Gators was in 1915, when C. J. McCoy was head coach of both the men's basketball and football programs at the school. The University of Florida was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. It wasn't until after Florida built their current indoor sports facility, the O'Connell Center, in 1980, that the Gators played in their first NCAA tournament in 1987.

Under the Gators’ first full-time basketball coach Norm Sloan, Florida qualified for six consecutive postseason matchups, with three appearances in the NIT and March Madness tournaments apiece between 1984 and 1989. Sloan’s tenure also delivered a run to the Sweet Sixteen during the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 1987 and their first SEC regular season championship in 1989.

From 1996 to 2015, head coach Billy Donovan led the Gators to nine straight NCAA Tournaments starting in 1999, plus six regular season conference championships, four SEC tournament championships, four Final Four appearances and two NCAA championships, in 2006 and 2007. The Florida Gators men’s basketball team won their third national championship as well as their fifth SEC tournament championship in 2025.

More than two dozen Florida Gators have gone on to become professional basketball players in the NBA. The Gators have a long-running in-state rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles, and their annual contest is the only out-of-conference game for both of the two oldest college teams in the state.

  • Gators Stomp Vandy, Billy Donovan Court official!

by Beerman on 2/18/20Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Game was awesome, like that the arena serves alcohol and different fiod options. Seats were not good however, rails were right in view of the court, very distracting. Will sit elsewhere next time, either higher up in 200 sections or down below in 100s. The first 2-3 rows of 200s have a rail in your view of the game which is not mentioned in ticket purchase, should be noted as obstructed views.

  • O'dome - a great place for basketball

My first BB game in the O'dome was awesome! Great view of the court from all seats.

  • Auburn game

It's always a nice to see a basketball game! If anyone has the chance to go to a game go! When Florida plays a good opponent the atmosphere is much better! I waited to buy this ticket I got lucky and paid face value! The traffic is nothing like a football game and it's easy to get out and get home!

  • Great time - fun for the family!

by Gatorsam on 12/31/19Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 4 out of 5

I always enjoy going to UF Basketball as well as various events held at Exactech Arena. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the concessions aren't the same throughout. To get a simple hotdog you have to go to the other side just to get it - why can't all concession areas have the same items? It's tough when you have kids with you. All Event Staff are great!

  • Great venue except for the seating

by Tom on 12/18/19Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 4 out of 5

I've been going to the O'Dome for over 30 years. This arena is really really nice now compared to how it used to be. The one gripe I have is they didn't improve the seating. I like the chair backs now but they are really small. Also there is enough leg room for a small child. Grown adults will find the leg room extremely cramped. I'm 6.5 feet tall and thankfully did not have anyone sitting in front of me for the game I attended. I probably would not have been able to sit in my seat had someone been sitting in front of me because my knees were poking out halfway into the next row in front of me. My dad is 6 foot tall and he was extremely uncomfortable during the game as well due to the lack of leg room. If you get tickets here and are taller than ~5.5 feet tall, expect to be uncomfortable for about two hours during a game.

  • Awesome

  • Florida Gators v. Vanderbilt Commodores

by EEW on 2/17/19Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

My wife, who has a torn ACL, and I had a great time at this close basketball game that took place on February 13, 2019. The Gators stadium staff were very friendly and accommodating in providing a wheelchair for my wife and otherwise taking care of her.

  • Go Gators

by Coach on 1/15/19Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

  • Not enough

    by D. P. on 1/8/19Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Handicap parking was not enough. NO BATHROOMS 🚽 in the 200 section or concessions. They just remodeled this place for a ungodly $$ price & NO bathrooms. THAT’S NOT RIGHT😡 SHAME ON YOU😡

  • First Game

  • Reptile Rout of Baylor

by GDUNN on 1/30/18Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The remodeling of the arena is tremendous. Great view of the floor from all vantage spots. Pre-game music, dancing, cheerleading, half time show was very entertaining. Game was a blowout for the Gators. Hot shooting put Baylor away early. Full house provided plenty of noise for the gators.

  • Florida Basketball Game Experience.

This Venue is a great place to watch Basketball. We were sorry to see that so many people did not attend. even though the venue was almost sold out. There were many tickets up for resell, so next time we may check them out. Thanks for asking.

  • Go Gators!

by ProfessorNurse on 11/8/17Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center - GainesvilleRating: 4 out of 5

UF basketball head coach Mike White is off to a great start with this group of young men! We have some great shooters and everyone played unselfishly. Should be an awesome season. I love the renovated Exactech arena. The seats are very comfortable. Wish the food choices could be upgraded a bit. Otherwise the whole experience would be perfect. Looking forward to an exciting basketball season!
