Florida Gators Men's Basketball History
The first tip-off for the Gators was in 1905, when C.J. McCoy was head coach of both the men's basketball and football programs at the school. The University of Florida was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. It wasn't until Florida built their current indoor sports facility, the O'Connell Center, in 1980, that the Gators played in their first NCAA tournament, in 1987.
Norm Sloan became the Gators' first full-time basketball coach in 1960 and made the team competitive for the first time since its founding. After six years, Sloan left the school but he returned in 1980 when the O'Connell Center opened. They made a run to the Sweet Sixteen during the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance in 1987.
The current head coach of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, Billy Donovan, coached the Gators from 1996 to 2015, and brought the program to new heights. He guided them to four Final Four appearances and two NCAA championships, in 2006 and 2007. Under Donovan, the Gators made seven straight NCAA tournaments starting in 1999.
More than two dozen Florida Gators — seven of whom are currently in the NBA — have gone on to become professional basketball players, including several NBA champions. These include three-time champion Udonis Haslem, Matt Bonner, Corey Brewer, David Lee, Marreese Speights and five-time All-Star Al Horford. The Gators have a long-running in-state rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles, and their annual contest is the only out-of-conference game for both of the two oldest college teams in the state.

Great seats good game I like a close feel with players. and fans alike
Love the Gators and Billy Donovan. Just sorry they didn't win. Hate the Dazzlers lewd dancing. Love the announcer for the game. Love the pee wee players at half time.
Gators looked good. High shooting percentage. Used a lot of the bench. Crowd was a bit thin due to the timing, but was enthusiastic. Seats were decent, though a long way from the court. Good time.
Fun times with very passionate Gator fans. Very exciting game. Son in Pep Band so makes the whole experience even better!
Fun atmosphere , great for kids of all ages. Welcoming staff. Overall terrific. I would plan to eat before or after the game. Limited menu of " stuff"
Great game!!! Another Gators win!! We love Gators basketball games!
Amazing game, amazing atmosphere, amazing time and an amazing win! It's Great To Be a Florida Gator!
School spirit was at an all time high. Very noisy crowd. It felt like the Gators would win, even from the start.
I feel that more general admission seats were sold than actual available seats. We were there early and couldn't find 3 seats together. We seen many people standing along the walls on the second level. We eventually sat on the 3rd level on the stairs. The basketball game was Great!!
The game was great but there was no where for us to sit! We got there about 20 minutes early but there were not many open seats in the general admission section and those that were empty were being "saved"! There were about 50 of us standing through the entire game.
The energy in the O'Connell complex was unbelievable! Fans went crazy and the Gators played an outstanding game. The Gators showed just why they are currently ranked #1! GO GATORS
Had a wonderful time! Very kid friendly, entertaining and 100x better watching in person than watching the game on TV.
My daughter is a freshman at UF, and I purchased a pack of tickets to 3 games. I have had so much fun I have returned and bought tickets to two more games. Quick trip from Jax, and easy to get in, see the game, and get out. It is almost as much fun to watch the Rowdy Reptiles (student section) as it is the game.
Had a blast! Great game! Seats were up high but a great deal for the price!
moved here from Indiana - looking for a great basketball team to follow that's local. We found it! Affordable tickets for this game - sorry tickets for UK are so pricy.
It's great to be a Florida Gator. Great game, great crowd, great win. What more could I want?
Gator's Basketball Games are always fun! We love going to as many games as we can, short drive from the Jacksonville Area.
I found our seats at tip off and someone was sitting there so i sat below them. When the people to those seats came i walked to the usher to help us to our seats. After pointing in the general direction and then asking him to physically show me we came upon the people who we're in our seats. Turns out those people bought the same TICKETS FOR THE SAME SEATS. They then told us to sit wherever so we did that until we continued getting tossed from the seats until halftime. Then we stood all of halftime and into the 2nd half waiting for people to settle down to find a seat. Being the first experience for my son and I and we felt like we were kicked out of every seat until late in the 2nd half when we asked someone if the seats were taken and they looked at us like we were trying to move to better seats.
Excellent seats despite being in the last row. The seats were located about mid court and the site lines were excellent. I would recommend these seats and service to my friends.
Excellent game the seats in B2 were very good just above the student section Rowdy Reptiles - Go Gators!!!!
