About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    Haunting and mesmerizing

by Caliiope on 1/26/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

It is a crime that this beautiful show closed after such a short run. Sure there were a few changes that could have been made, but the show was lovely and lyrical. Sting's score is generous and bountiful, accessible without compromising. What could have brought in the crowds it deservered? Better marketing as the universal story it was? Who knows? Maybe it can have a second life in concert versions.

    Better than I thought

by FanGirlNJ on 1/25/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I was reluctant to see this show. We decided two day before going to get tickets. Glad we picked the Saturday show since Sunday was icy. It was much better than expected and was extremely glad I had the opportunity to see this show. I would definitely recommend this show but sadly it has closed. If you are able try and check out the taping in the Lincoln Center library.

The Last Ship with Sting -- terrific!

by rh24 on 1/25/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I consider myself lucky to have seen it during its short run and in its last week (with Sting in the role of Jackie White). Very poignant and the music is great. Michael Esper and Rachel Tucker are excellent in the lead roles as is the rest of the cast. Was hoping to hear more Geordie accents but the cast did not deliver on that count -- not even Sting who is a Geordie.

    Last Ship -- So Good

by NYCmackenzie on 1/25/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I wasn't expecting much, and isn't that often the way when you are about to see something magnificent? This play has so much greatness in it - the storyline, the music, the dancing, the realness of the actors, the sets, and the fact that this is a play that men can enjoy as much as women, because it is a man's story about his life and his father. I want to see it again and again, with or without Sting adding a punch to the cast. I think some early weak reviews did so much harm to this amazing show, but on the night I attended every audience member was on their feet immediately, giving it the enveloping applause it deserved. Well done, all. Bravo!

    Sting at his Best!

by Anonymous on 1/25/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Great Music, great cast. Special appearence of Sting does not shadow the cast.- in the contrary: he is a Team member. Can not understand that this Show has low sales. Of course, it is not Mainstream - and the hero does not get his woman at the end!

Shame it's leaving. Best Musical in years. Broadway fans didn't give this show a chance. Their loss.

    The Last Ship

by Kadykins on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Excellent creativity in every area, scenery, lighting, costuming, staging, choreography. Very talented ensemble cast. Excellent acting, singing, dancing! The music and lyrics were exquisite. I can't wait to see what Sting does next! The story just grabs your attention and doesn't let go. A true original that Broadway needs much more of. Would see it again in a minute!

    Excellent! Such Talents!

by FABDON on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

We loved THE LAST SHIP! Enjoyed the singing and dancing by all. Great to be able to hear the brogue and accents in the story telling songs. Heartfelt telling of one's progression of life with that Magdelene girl and the Father and the Son included! We play the CD in our home, car and heads! THANK YOU!

Such a shame to see it go!

by LittleMegGiry88 on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Having seen the show in November for Thanksgiving, I immediately booked a trip back to NYC to see it again in January, and I couldn't be more grateful that I got to go before it closed. It is such a phenomenal show and it's extremely unfortunate it is closing so soon. Sting has written a truly wonderful show with a remarkable score. And it's a wonderfully heartwarming story too. My fiancee and I were not the only ones in the audience who had come back for a repeat experience. Now we can only hope it will get some love come Tony season. Bon voyage, Last Ship!

Great story that doesn't resolve with easy answers

by CatLadyAustin on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I happen to love Celtic music, so the score was very enjoyable. And the choreography was perfect for this musical. While I enjoyed Sting (and he was very polished as both the singer and actor), it was the whole story that I loved. Too bad the promotion didn't focus on the relationship story-line. I especially liked that, in the end, the girl didn't go with the first boyfriend, but stayed with the guy who'd stood by her all those years. And the resolution of the storyline with the son and father was excellent too. There's lots of humor and the characters felt very real. It's too bad that this show is closing. Hopefully, it'll be turned into a touring show.

The Last Ship is a theatrical jewel!

by Aldonzinea on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

From the sweetly rollicking, rolling, nautical music, highly polished direction, exquisitely crafted book, and endlessly inventive and evocative stage design, to the outstanding vocal soloists, exquisite vocal harmonies, solid acting, superb instrumental accompaniment, and plentiful manly dancing, The Last Ship is a theatrical jewel. How lucky I am to have experienced it, and how unfortunate for anyone who misses it!

Best musical! Heart felt! Historical! True Blue!

by DeborahMS on 1/24/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The Last Ship is exhilarating. Transports audience to the, all so human, moments in time as Robert Frost's "The Road not Taken" touches. Yet, reveals compassion, passion, forgiveness & love with heart. Although the story takes place in a shipping community of a time past, the experience happens today, showing how vulnerable a community can be when defendant upon one resource : one industry. This community 'fights back,' with the help of their priest. First love & innocence. Life circumstance broke promises made. Love endures. Closure. Continuity. Resolve. Beauty of inner growth & community ...sigh. My absolute favorite musical in every way. True Blue! I wish I could go to the last show today with Sting.

    My Fourth Time

by SBtheGP on 1/23/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I've been going to musical theater for fifty-five years and have never particularly been a fan of Sting's music, but the storyline intrigued me and I got a half-price ticket to one of the previews. I've been back three more times, am going to the (unfortunately) final performance on Saturday and have become a fan of Sting's music...at least this music. Yes the book has holes in it, but who cares? It's an emotionally engaging evening with great music and great performances. Rachel Tucker, Collin Kelly-Sordelet and Fred Applegate alone are worth the price of admission but all of the performances are strong. This play and production deserved a much better fate.

    Eye-opening

by Crumpler on 1/23/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Music, costumes, set - amazing! Gave me the feel of a gritty industrial town in England and the hopelessness felt by the residents and workers. The singing by individuals and groups was some of the best I've heard and the dancing dis not seem out of place for these burly shipbuilders. All was coordinated perfectly with the searing story of lost work, wages and self-esteem and the reawakening of power when taking control of their own lives and building another ship. Sting has done a superb job of bringing this story to us all, portrayed by most excellent acting. First act was a little long; perhaps intermission could have come a little earlier in the script.

The best Musical Play I have seen in years!

by DAKJP on 1/23/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Never have I been so moved by a play/musical. A truly amazing musical: the acting, the singing, the music, the sets, the lighting design, the set design, the special effects, the costumes, and everything about the play could not have been better. I saw the show on Saturday, and it is now Friday, and I am still singing the songs to myself. The entire production was infectious, and I was lucky enough to see Sting perform in it, but he made sure he did not steal the show from any of the other characters. This Musical is truly a rare work of art, and I could see it over and over again. Loved it.
