About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    Stings ship

by Anonymous on 1/23/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The show was moving and very enjoyable! I wish it was having a longer run so I could have others see it. Sting was great but so were the other cast members! We loved it!

The musicality was Bigger than the ship!

by Issima on 1/23/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I went in with my ears filled with all the noise from the negative reviews and came out in tears because it was such a moving story interwoven with slightly familiar music and oldies. I wanted so many scenes to replay themselves because of the harmonies and boisterous, bawdy tempos. The only negative for me was that I missed seeing some of the cast when my eyes were on Sting, but who can blame me? It was fabulous! I wish I could see it again.

    Staying Power

by NYThel on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I am 80 years old, not exactly the Sting generation, but I heard him speak beautifully on a TV interview about his early years and I was moved. Then I heard music from the show and that cinched it. I bought tickets for my 30 year-old granddaughter and myself. We both tloved the play! The performances were marvelous (Rachel Tucker and Sally Ann Triplett come to mind), as were the sets and staging. Best of all were the music and the lyrics;I plan to buy a recording. My granddaughter and I feel so badly that The Last Ship will soon close and not be available to delight others. We don`t understand why word of mouth hasn`t been a saviour.

The Last Ship is a lasting memory!

by elcorg on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I'm soo very tired of listening to screeching female voices (yes, I didn't care for Wicked)! Sting has evolved into a modern-day musical creative genius along the likes of a Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story). What a wonderful experience to witness the perfect balance of acting, staging, music and lyric surrounding a real life storyline! The vocals and well placed harmonies (male and female) were very well done and brought the overall performance to an incredible level...a heavenly high! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!!

A Feast for all the senses. Sting, the musicians and all the cast was amazing...I was crying, smiling, singing with them all the time! I wish it never ends...I was deeply moved! Thank you so much!

The Last Ship was well made.

by Baiser on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I saw this musical "The Last Ship" because of how incredibly Sting performed the song "Show Some Respect" at the Thanksgiving Parade. His swagger and voice all balanced wonderfully with the choreography. This song came in the second act with a woman singing the lead and naturally this affected the choreography. Sting was somewhere in the back of the stage. I was hoping to see the magic Sting brought to this number once again; still the cast and the show were excellent so I won't hang on the shore of regretful glances.

    Don't Miss This!!!!

by MeanReds on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

As a Merchant Marine married to a Merchant Marine, and having been raised in a family were all the men either sailed or worked the yard, this show brought tears to my eyes. Although we sailed 30 years ago, these memories of sounds, and sights and the atmosphere of a ship yard never leaves one. I knew the characters. Sting got this right. Meg's looking out to sea and counting the ships spoke of her yearning for the return of her love that once was. One does not have to be a seaman to understand and relate to the loss of a love and the shock of their return. The ending of a way of life that lasted decades is common these days. Yet when it occurs, as it has for the most part with ship building in the US, that community bound together by their work struggles with and resists the change. Although "The Last Ship" speaks to a distinct audience, all can relate to it's themes. Thank you Sting and cast. You are wonderful. I would attend again.

The Last Ship is a show not to be missed!

by Anonymous on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Everything about this show is excellent. It really is a shame that the show has to close. The entire cast received a standing ovation from every member of the sold out performance. It is a story of relationships and life and my husband who does not like the theatre especially musicals enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend you try and see it before the show closes.

    Last Ship Surprises

by kcvidkid on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I don't know why I wasn't eager to see this. In fact, I never would have seen it if Sting had not joined the cast. But I'm glad I did! The Last Ship is in many ways a typical Broadway musical, particularly in the way it is structured. However, it is surprisingly emotional and uplifting. Sting was fine, but it was actually the young man in the lead who was fantastic. I don't understand why this isn't a huge hit. For me, the impression I had of it beforehand just didn't match what the show actually was.

    Worth it to see Sting

by KSundt on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I feel very sad writing this review. Sting is a wonderful performer, and it was fabulous to see him. Each performer is extremely talented with excellent voices and stage charisma. The set is magnificent-simple yet majestic. The theme song is both eerily light and musical and laden with grief and unlived potential. What was lacking, for me, was a cohesive story.

    Transparent emotions

by H101 on 1/22/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The crew, the voice, and thanks to Sting's amazing story. This show was far from what I could have imagined, the volume was powerful but not too loud, the precision and timing were natural and I can say that cause I have seen it 3 times in a week, at the third rows. I loved it. If only it could have played more. This will be a must have in bluray.

The Sting songs from long ago were unexpectedly incorporated into this play. It was wonderful. His part and character was well done. I felt as though I was in Newcastle along with him.

The Last Ship was an ensemble masterpiece!

by StarMark on 1/21/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The Last Ship, featuring the composer, Sting, was a brilliant ensemble tour-de-force. Everyone in this cast gave an unforgettable performance. A lot of the sold out crowd that was at the performance I attended was there to see Sting, but they were treated to a wonderfully written (Book and Score) and superbly acted masterpiece! My wife and I were immersed in director Joe Montello's atmospheric production, which included a very realistic hull of the ship that the crew were building. There were several outstanding performances. Rachel Tucker was brilliant as Meg Dawson, a barmaid in the pub where a lot of the musical's action takes place. Michael Esper brings grit and real life gusto to Gideon Fletcher, who left the dying shipbuilding town 15 years ago and has just returned for his estranged father's funeral. Sting is very believable as the fiery foreman of the yard Jackie White. The actor who almost stole the show, however, was the fabulous Fred Applegate as the local priest, Father O'Brien. I have read reviews that praised Sting's music (deservedly), but criticized John Logan and Brian Yorkey's book. I thought the story pulled me in right from the beginning. It was obviously a blue collar story about a dying industry, but it was also a story about a man coming to terms with his own feelings about his father. I thought Logan's and Yorkey's book, together with Sting's raucous and haunting score really engulfed the audience in this very memorable story. As you probably know by now, this show is closing on January 24th. Much too soon for this wonderful show. I am an avid theater goer and this show ranks among the best I have ever seen! When the cast started to come out for the curtain calls, the entire crowd rose into a well deserved standing ovation. We didn't wait for Sting or the other leads to come out. We were already standing. I only hope the producers release this on video because I really want to see it again! I think they pulled the plug on this show too early.

Excellent show. Only confusing was the CD they were selling as the original Broadway cast not have all the same songs as what the playbill had

    The Last Ship

by JMC71DJ on 1/21/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The show was outstanding. What a disappointment that it will be closing this coming weekend. The story was exceptional, the actors, singers and dancers superb, and Sting was marvelous. The stage set and music was fabulous. My forty-three old son introduced me to Sting and The Police, they were his first favorite group as a young teen. We both have shared a like for this wonderful performer, musician, singer, song writer and philanthropist. I feel this story would be great for a movie. Hope that would come to fruition. We attended the show on Sunday, Jan. 18. The weather was torrential rain the entire day and we were soaked just getting to the theater but it was all worth it in the end.

The Last Ship an incredible journey!

What a treat to see Sting preform in his musical! The rest of the cast was great! The set were really cool and I loved the imagery! We brought a friend with us who had never been to a Broadway show or live musical! She came away mesmerized! What a treat for her!
