The hip hop self-starters Macklemore & Ryan have gone far in a short time: they brought thrift stores to the masses with breakout No. 1 single “Thrift Shop,” released their debut album Heist to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, and came out in support of same-sex marriage with gay rights anthem “Same Love.” Combining Macklemore’s thoughtful, funny verses and Lewis’ expertly crafted productions, their unique take on hip hop has struck a major chord with audiences, but what ultimately makes the duo a success has been their ability to write some of the year’s catchiest hooks. As a performer, Macklemore radiates positive energy and delivers his rapid-fire lyrics with crystal clear precision – Lewis takes a supporting role, cueing the beats, hyping the crowd, and engaging in the occasional crowd surf. The pair are on tour in 2013 in support of their debut album, and tickets are in high demand thanks to their reputation for dynamic, must-see live shows.
The Seattle-based duo first joined forces in 2006 when Lewis became Macklemore’s promo photographer, but the focus quickly shifted to music with the release of The VS. series, which included The VS. EP in 2009 and The VS. Redux in 2010. Their 2013 debut The Heist took three years to write and record, and it shows – from the extensive list of collaborators to the appearance of the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the record oozes originality and craftsmanship. In addition to producing, recording, and mixing all of their recordings, Lewis also directs their music videos, including the video for No. 1 single “Can’t Hold Us,” an epic seven-minute-long mini-film that earned them an MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. As for the music’s point of view, Macklemore isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo of his chosen genre – from questioning the materialism of hip hop culture in “Thrift Shop” to lamenting homophobia among rappers in “Same Love,” these are songs that embrace diversity and endorse keeping an open mind.
The friggin best show i have EVER attended.super high energy, great dancing, just amazing!
I took my 16 year old son and his friend. They are big Macklemore fans. The concert could not have been any better. Macklemore is such a GREAT entertainer. It was Magic!!
This concert was the bomb dude !!!! Best night of my life.
A really energetic show with TONS of hilarious and personal moments. It was just one big party, as promised. We were at the very front so it was cool to experience that. It was my brother's first show, would definitely go again.
The show was really bad one of worst events I have been to the thing around 1 am the ticket says 8 pm
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were absolutely phenomenal on so many levels. Their set list was on point. Production was amazing. And the energy was second to none. If you have a chance to catch this show do it!
The concert was unforgettable! I was a little wary of it being in the coliseum but I ended up liking the venue more than most. Macklemore was energetic, fun, and talented. You could see how happy he was to be performing in the PNW and the energy the crowd brought made the concert even better. I've always liked Macklemore as an artist, but My respect and love for him continues to grow after seeing him live.An amazing guy in general, and an even more amazing performer.
Macklemore did a great job with interacting with us and put on a very good show. I was very pleased.
We waited for 3 hours to see Macklemore...so horrible!
Family friendly fun. took my son and he says it was the best day of his life! He put on a great show.
Easy access to get into the venue. Easy to find my seats. High prices for food and drinks as usual at events. Sound awesome and concert itself was out of this world.
Loved the show. Very entertaining. Dance Off was the best song. Loved how both albums were incorporated. Highly recommended to friends. Hope to see them again back in Portland!
Being a foster parent I feel so much better giving my kids involved in music and art events then anything else. We have several different ages in our home and three of my kids love Malcklemore ! They loved it so much it's our oldest Foster sons second time to see him and he wants to go again! Thanks Portland for a great production and hope too see you next year ! Aaron Broc & Kami Mom too! P.S. Congratulations on being a Dad❤️
The shoe was so great. The two performers that came in before him were so good and got everyone pumped for the show. Macklemore has so much energy when he performs! Although the performances were amazing, a fight broke out right next where I was and a group of drunk girls brought weed in and was smoking it. Security needed to do a better job controlling the fight and taking everyone that was involved out of the audience.
So much fun!!! Great experience and loved the positive emphasis.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been on my bucket list to see for a while now, and I have to say this concert was well worth every penny!!
Macklemore really knows how to put on a show. He had great stories leading up to the songs that kept the crowd entertained and then performed the songs flawlessly.
AMAZING AS ALWAYS! This was my second time seeing Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and it was just as good as the first time I saw them.
The best concert I've seen hands down especially for the price !! I would see him again.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis put on an amazing show. It started out great and got better and better as the evening went on. It was the best show in a small venue that I have ever seen. I would go again in a heartbeat. It was my daughter's first concert (13 yr old) and she absolutely loved it. They set the bar high for her! Thanks for an Amazing evening!
