About

The hip hop self-starters Macklemore & Ryan have gone far in a short time: they brought thrift stores to the masses with breakout No. 1 single “Thrift Shop,” released their debut album Heist to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, and came out in support of same-sex marriage with gay rights anthem “Same Love.” Combining Macklemore’s thoughtful, funny verses and Lewis’ expertly crafted productions, their unique take on hip hop has struck a major chord with audiences, but what ultimately makes the duo a success has been their ability to write some of the year’s catchiest hooks. As a performer, Macklemore radiates positive energy and delivers his rapid-fire lyrics with crystal clear precision – Lewis takes a supporting role, cueing the beats, hyping the crowd, and engaging in the occasional crowd surf. The pair are on tour in 2013 in support of their debut album, and tickets are in high demand thanks to their reputation for dynamic, must-see live shows.

The Seattle-based duo first joined forces in 2006 when Lewis became Macklemore’s promo photographer, but the focus quickly shifted to music with the release of The VS. series, which included The VS. EP in 2009 and The VS. Redux in 2010. Their 2013 debut The Heist took three years to write and record, and it shows – from the extensive list of collaborators to the appearance of the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the record oozes originality and craftsmanship. In addition to producing, recording, and mixing all of their recordings, Lewis also directs their music videos, including the video for No. 1 single “Can’t Hold Us,” an epic seven-minute-long mini-film that earned them an MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. As for the music’s point of view, Macklemore isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo of his chosen genre – from questioning the materialism of hip hop culture in “Thrift Shop” to lamenting homophobia among rappers in “Same Love,” these are songs that embrace diversity and endorse keeping an open mind.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are UNREAL.

by eClout on 8/13/13Shaw Conference Centre - Edmonton

This was probably the greatest concert I have ever been to. Although it was general admission in Edmonton, it made it that much more fun getting front row. I managed to get there and the show was INCREDIBLE. Genuinely talented, they know how to keep it interesting, they know how to work the crowd, and they know they're fans very well. Highly recommend this show. ALWAYS.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis = FANTASTIC

by djjazzyjeff on 8/9/13Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

What an amazing show from start to finish. Shad was a great opening act. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had me engaged from the moment they began their set, and had me dancing and singing along with them the entire time. I found Macklemore to be engaging, funny, and never missed a beat during the performance. I appreciated Macklemore sharing his struggles before "Starting Over", "Same Love" practically had me in tears, and the performance in "And We Danced" was high energy and fun. Thank you Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for sharing yourselves and your talent with Saskatoon. One of my favorite concerts ever!

    Incredible performance.

We all love the music, that's obvious. But the performance was spectacular, exceptional, incredible! When you fall in love with an artist or band or musician, it's found through live shows. I've been following Macklemore for the past year or so and he just continues to get better and better. I didn't see one face in the crowd not dancing and smiling. Everyone was having a blast, making new friends and enjoying/sharing the love of music. Not only was Macklemore and Ryan Lewis incredible, Shad set the bar high! He got the crowd moving and kept our energy at 100%. His freestyles were so dope and fresh. The whole night, even with the rain and puddles and ruined shoes, it was a night I will never forget. So thank you.

Can't wait to see macklemore and Ryan Lewis again!

by Stefanie1982 on 8/5/13TD Echo Beach - Toronto

Macklemore was so in tuned with his audience. His stories were hilarious, he speaks like a real person.,... Not like a celebrity. He performs as good live, as he does on his album. Ryan Lewis and macklemore have fantastic music, and I cannot wait to see him again some day. Looking forward for another album release one day!
