Young the giant.....amazing. Great live show, strong vocals, true to studio sound

I was extremely impressed with how much energy Young the Giant had! Sameer has stunning charisma, a phenomenal voice live and he's the best tambourine player I've ever seen. The band itself has brilliant stage presence and when they brought the Cello and the string quartet onto the stage, it was gorgeous! They also had some really nice lights going on on the stage, these beams, bulbs and colorful cubes! GroupLove was also super fun. I love how they had different singers for different songs, and I am amazed at Hannah's energy for being sick with a 100 degree Fahrenheit fever and no voice! Overall it was a great concert and I would definitely see Young the Giant again.

Venue was great. Sound quality was impeccable. Grouplove had a fantastic performance and Young the Giant was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to Philly. Attended the concert again in DC yesterday and once again the bands did not disappoint a bit! Check them out!

I now love Grouplove even more and am obsessed with this band! Fantastic energy and great show. I loved every minute. Young the Giant was awesome. I loved the sound the strings section brought to the live performance. This was my favorite show of the year and I've seen more than 50 bands since October!

Grouplove is something special. I will see them again on their headline tour. Still love YtG but they need a couple more upbeat songs (outside of My Body) if they want to keep a concert crowd entertained.

  • AWESOME show!!! They were great!

by Lahoorah on 3/12/12The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Highly recommend seeing these guys in concert. What a fun show. Group Love opened for them ... and they were awesome too. Definitely want to see them again when their new CD comes out in Spring.

  • Grouplove Steals the Show

    by HankB1 on 3/12/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

There is something to the opening chords of Grouplove's "Lovely Cup." It is airy, melodic and eventually outright joyous. It is built with a booming bass line (Sean Gadd.) Soon the rhythm guitar and vocals chime in nicely (Christian Zucconi and Hannah Harper.) Lead guitar/vocalist Andrew Wessen puts some energetic fills in just the right spots. And rail thin (and by appearance ill fitting) drummer Ryan Rabin fires through his kit with laser like precision. All the elements of energetic pop and rock play along wonderfully. It is a brilliant track to open a set with. It sets the tone. It puts a smile on your face. Each member has a turn to shine (as they did through their entire 40 minute set.) Some bands take a lifetime to figure out how best to open their sets. Some bands never make a record as strong as Grouplove's debut, Never Trust a Happy Song. Born in both NY (Harper and Zucconi and LA (the rest) with a stop over in an artists residency on the Isle of Crete, last night at Terminal 5 Grouplove announced its presence with authority. This isn't an Earth shattering revolution either. Grouplove is built from a simple, yet effective recipe for success. Think Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham circa 2012. Ashford and Simpson meets The Band. It's what Dave Matthews and Joan Osborne's kids' band might sound like if they formed a band. 2 guitars and a strong rhythm bass section. A man and woman with strong and distinctive voices (that match their personalities.) And an energy that is palpable. Their were times during the sold out show (most attendees were their for the opener) the band members looked at each other with immense smiles. Zucconi mentioned how just a few years prior they were playing to a 100 or so folks and living from/in their cars. Here, back in the City that started it all just 3 years ago, they ignited a large crowd with spectacular maturity. They played mostly from their LP save for covering Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody." That was both a nice touch and an effective follow up to their hit "Tongue Tied." That song, played on an Iphone ad over Christmas and then given ample radio play, had the potential to be a let down. How many times have you seen a band play the song they are known for and soon lose interest? Not last night. It had an added joy and pep lost in an ad shilling downloads. A reminder of just how powerful the live experience can be. When was the last time you left your feet and danced to a commercial? The set ended with the dark yet charming power ballad "Colours." It, like the songs before it, built to a wonderful climax of primal euphoria. The bar was set very high. Young the Giant never stood a chance. Oh, and Young the Giant headlined. That's not fair. The California band also has but one studio album (self titled,.) They have had more commercial success, led by their (3) alt radio "hits", "My Body." "Apartment." and "Cough Syrup." Led by vocalist/showman Sameer Gadhia they played what amounted to a slightly above average set. But it did not fully engage the crowd, or this reviewer. Their catalog is built of mostly soft guitar and/or slow moving frat rock hits. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. But Terminal 5, as mentioned in this space before, is not the most forgiving room. In fact, it is a rather cavernous sound killer. A friend mentioned "It is where good bands come to sound like SH&%." When the crowd senses another slow number they soon lose interest. When the song sounds real similar to the one prior things can get a touch boring. They would pick up things a bit from time to time, but then the infamous distortion created by Terminal 5's ill conceived speaker set up would bite back a bit. The songs were well crafted and pleasant. But you should not be overhearing conversations at a rock show. And you should definitely not be engaging in them. Perhaps a smaller venue would better suit this talented group? Perhaps a place with seats? Gadhia implored the cliche "Hello New York!" and "Let's Rock" throughout the show. But it felt forced when he would then launch into another moody vibe piece. There was a string quartet and other horns sprinkled in here and there. They were barely audible. And Gadhia used 2 mics throughout the set and each sounded identical. It gave him the look of someone trying real hard. Effort should be rewarded. But we are not handing out participation trophies. Don't be surprised if last nights playing order isn't reversed in the near future. And remember who told you first. For pictures and audio links please go to: guidetosomewhere.blogspot.com "My Body" The encore and highlight of the show. All things being equal Gadhia has a tremendous voice and this song is a rollicking good time. The only time during their set the entire crowd was engaged.

    AMAZING SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Young the Giant + Grouplove = AMAZING

    by Kurisu on 3/11/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Young the Giant definitely knows how to put on a quality live performance! i expected it to be a fun show, but I was still blown away at how amazing it was! Grouplove, the opening act, was the best possible way to start things off. Every song in their set was so vibrant and full of energy, I was in a good mood all throughout. I also love that every member takes lead vocal duty at least once, and that they switch up instruments among each other. It shows that all of them have serious musical talent. Young the Giant came on afterward, and immediately we got a taste of Sameer Gadhia's excellent skills as a frontman. I've basically had a vision of what would make a really great frontman, and he basically checked off each quality down the list. As a performer, there's almost none better today. His energy and passion filled the room as he swayed, shimmied, and bounced around, while beautifully singing his way through every song. He's also quite the avid tambourine man. The band played through the majority of their amazing album, as well as a whopping 3 new songs, all done so skillfully. During the show, they were joined by an extra drummer, as well as a string quartet for songs such as Cough Syrup. Both of my favorite songs, St. Walker and Apartment, were followed with extended jams, and were definitely my highlights of the night. My Body, the last song of the night, was clearly the most energy-filled song of the night, as it got everybody in the venue to jump and sing along. Sameer's crowdsurf during the final chorus was, while expected, epic nonetheless, especially considering I was in the front row and right by it. All in all, it was definitely one of the best concerts I have been to in a while, and that's saying something- I go to a lot of concerts, at least once or twice a month (this month I'll have done 4 total). If Young the Giant and/or Grouplove ever come to your area, I highly recommend seeing them before they sell out!

Young the Giant was superb! Venue is great for this kind of bands, sound was perfect, lights were good etcetc. And that all for a low ticket price. Have already my tickets for the concert in Central Park!

  • by Annie421 on 3/11/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Young the giant put on a great show. I find a lot of bands to not be so great live and it disappointing and thier value as a band is lowered in my mind; but young the giants is truly a great band both live and recorded. They deserve whatever new fame is coming for them in the future! Grouplove was also great live! In my oppinion they were much better live than they are recorded! :) Bottom line awesome show!

  • Unbelievable

    by Ashley123djejdjfje on 3/11/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show. Great song selection. Great energy. The only thing i didnt appreciate was all the young high schol kids there pushing and just being annoying overall. I would have had a better time had there been a more mature audience. Opening act was also amazing!!!!

  • by LaurenYTG on 3/11/12Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

literally the best concert i've ever been too. Grouplove and Young the Giant were AMAZING. what an unforgettable night. They both sounded great/maybe even better live then they do in their studio versions. GO SEE THEM!!!! you won't regret it
