About

There is a reason audiences fell in love with Yann Tiersen’s film soundtracks - his lush melodies sparking nostalgia and longing in a handful of lilting notes. With stripped-back versions of his moody, swooning piano pieces, field recordings, delirious violin and toy-piano whimsy, the multi-instrumentalist’s solo show will make the grand Concert Hall feel intimate and magical – like a show inside a vintage music box.

There’s more to Tiersen than the much-adored scores to Amélie (which was largely taken from his existing studio albums) and Good Bye, Lenin! Inspired by post-punk as well as French folk music and chamber pop, his distinctive style is realised through his genreless approach to composition and mastery of literally dozens of instruments. His new project, EUSA, lays field recordings from his native Breton coast over the twinkling, eloquent piano for which he’s most famous. It is all here in this dazzling live show, where his most beloved pieces will nestle up against some of his most personal work in years.

    Yann Tiersen is amazing live

I loved Yann Tiersen's performance. The songs he played on the violin were the most memorable and enjoyable!

    Better live than on CD

by Randerza on 5/2/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I'm already a Yann Tiersen fan, but was transfixed from beginning to end with the sheer amount of talent on stage. There must've been a hundred instruments bought on throughout the show, including a violin that Yann played so intensely at one moment that he snapped a string. The whole band just seems to gel so well, perfectly in sync with one another. The set list started out with tracks from Dust Lane (with a few interesting changes here and there), gradually progressing to the new tracks from Skyline. I'm not a huge fan of Skyline but the music was more punchy on stage and ended up being quite a crowd-pleaser. If I had choose one fault, it would be the overpowering synths, which got a little much at times.

it was terrible and noisy without anything that shines

Yann Tiersen was absolutely breathtaking from the moment that he stepped on stage until the moment that he left. He is an excellent performer and an even better musician. At this concert alone he played the violin, guitar, a twelve string guitar, a synthesizer, a keyboard, a mandolin, and an instrument that looked like a toy piano that he had to blow into to make it play. I would highly recommend him to anyone and look forward to seeing him again the newt time that he comes to New England.

    Phenomenal

by hijunglegym on 5/2/12Royale Boston - Boston

Yann Tiersen is a genius and his concert is an absolute audible display of that genius. No it is not the Amelie soundtrack, but in a way it was surprisingly better. He played at least a dozen instruments, including a violin solo that literally brought me to tears. Possibly the best concert I have ever witnessed.

    Brilliant

by youmethesea on 3/20/11Highline Ballroom - New York City

To everyone denouncing Yann's shows because they weren't what they expected: perhaps, before you buy tickets, you should look up show information. All of Yann's concerts have been advertised as part of his Dust Lane Tour, which should logically lead you to assume that he will be performing songs from his LATEST album called.... Dust Lane. It was not called the Amelie tour for a reason. And maybe, if you call yourselves fans, it is time for you to pick up some of his other, equally brilliant albums anyway. In any case, Yann and his band put on a show that is indescribable: infinite passion, talent, and beauty. For the first time in a long while, I felt like myself again. I've never attended a better show. Yann showed up on time, three minutes after the opening act, and played a ten minute encore that was absolutely phenomenal. Minutes after the show, he stepped out for a cigarette, and graciously took photos and met with fans (the few that didn't leave immediately). He is just the coolest, and most humble person ever. And his French accent is beautiful. As is he. One of the best experiences of my life.

    Eh...

He is extremely talented musically, but all of his sounds are meant for thematic purposes and would work much better on the screen. Stick to making soundtracks. Musically 9 out of 10. Entertainment-wise live: 4 out of 10

    Better live!

by armature on 3/14/11The Music Box - Hollywood

My girlfriend was the one initially interested in this show after being a fan of Yann's score for Amelie. What we experienced that night was far from what we were expecting and it was awesome. First, for the record, Breathe Owl Breathe was fantastic. Their quirky presentation, awkward delivery and compositional genius shined as the opening act and on the way home from the concert it was THEIR songs we were singing. Their raw talent was on full display and they did not disappoint. Yann and his band put on a spectacular show that, among other things, showed a violin can shine as the focal instrument of a rock song. Interestingly, after returning home from the concert I pulled up some music from both groups and compared the live to the recorded and I have to admit that Breathe Owl Breathe sounds great in both places, however their crowd interaction and stage presence manages to take their live sound and amplify the experience to something far beyond what their recorded music accomplishes. What was more interesting was the transition of Yann's music from recorded to live... His set was full of music from his most recently released CD however the live show was much more intense and raw. The live show felt much more like a rock show than the CD presents. Personally, I prefer the live music. In the end, a great show filled with musicians ending their tour on a very high note in a perfect venue to shine.

    Mind blowing, fantastic show!

by Irlandaise on 3/13/11The Music Box - Hollywood

With the exception of the horrific, room-clearing opening act (featuring a woman in a plush animal dog-hat barking in a high pitched voice) this show was AMAZING! Yann Tiersen is a brilliant musician with a powerful presence and energy - it's as incredible to watch him play as it is to hear him. I have wanted to see him for years, and am totally THRILLED that he came to LA! The Music Box theatre was the perfect intimate, surreal venue for his style and music.

Yann Tiersen & Breathe Owl Breathe are amazing!

by 22lalaland on 3/13/11The Music Box - Hollywood

It was the first time I have even heard of Breathe Owl Breathe, and let me say that I became an instant fan. They are cool, funny, and so good at interacting with the audience and making the show fun. As for Yann Tiersen, it was the first time I've seen him perform and all I can say is "WOW!"... so much talent bundled into one person! His violin skills are phenomenal. My jaw hit the floor :O

Great Show. I was far more familiar with Yann's more acoustic/classical stuff, and a few of my friends who also attended felt dissapointed that he didnt play more of that kind of thing. However, I was pleasently surprised to see this new synth-punk/noise music type of sound coming from him; i never heard that side of him & his band! Overall, great experience (and the opening band was so quirky & cute (for lack of better words). i really liked them!)

Yann Tiersen w/ Breathe Owl Breathe was AWESOME!

by Yoshikid on 3/13/11The Music Box - Hollywood

I had a great time! So much energy and talent! The opening band was very funny with their reasons why their songs were called "this" or "that." Also, Yann Tiersen's violin solo during sur le fil was absolutely amazing! I loved it! I'm really glad that he came to California, since last year or so, all of his tours were in Europe. Finally! I'm just glad that he came! :D

If you know and love Yann Tiersen for his folk compositions, don't expect to hear any of it in concert. What you will get is some standard rock with a lot of wailing and repetitive synth loops. No wonder so many people left midway through the show.

    Losing His Way

by BigMez on 3/13/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Expecting an evening of beautiful melodic instrumental music, we were instead treated to 90 minutes of 3rd rate post-rock versions of his music. If you're expecting to hear anything to sound like his solo albums and soundtracks you're going to be severely disappointed. The playfulness, the world music influence, and the very things that make Tiersen unique were absent. Instead he and his 4 member band wallowed in every stereotype of post-rock performing. The final effect was boring and sleep inducing. We just came away from the concert with a really bad vibe. Don't think I'll ever see Tiersen perform again.

Dearly fond of Tiersen's music after the live show

by ElenaE on 3/11/11The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

The event was memorable indeed, much stronger in person than listening to a recording, because you feel the force of the music so much more when you see him create it on stage. We even liked the opening band, whom I hadn't heard of before, they made a great show in the last part that we got to watch. The venue was a bit annoying - there are two addresses in SF that differ only by zip code, so make sure you go to the right one. Also, parking there is horrible since all the parking lots around close at 10 or 10:30, before the concert ends, so you must scavenge for street parking. It was worth it though!
