    Big Screen Wonka

by BonAnna on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What a great experience. Seeing the classic Willy Wonka on the big screen was amazing. The blue eyes and purple coat - colors were poppin'! Weird Al as the oompa loompas was a fabulous idea and he was the hit of the show. I don't know who Elle King or Fynn Winehard are so I would suggest other actors. All in all it was a great night.

    Willy Wonka gave me Willies

    by WillieJ53 on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Overall the show seemed poorly executed, clearly had sound issues as we could not hear the performers and saw one soloist pull the earphones from her ear. Some long gaps prior to small performances which added little value. Enjoyed Weird Al hi jinks

Willy Wonka Film with live singing perfomances!

by Dansmyrealtor on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

As a huge fan of the original 1970s Willy Wonka film with Gene Wilder I was excited to hear that the film would be shown and accompanied with live song and music. We think they did a good job, considering it was the first time being done, and the animated projections that were actually all upon the Hollywood bowl frame really made the experience! It was fun to watch the musical song numbers being performed, they we're done well and the accompanying dancers added a nice touch. We didn't think MC/host wasn't very impressive and felt they would do well with somebody who was more experienced or well-known. Overall it was great to watch and the special surprises and guest stars like Richard Kind as Grandpa Joe, Elle King as Veruca Salt and Ingrid Michaelson as Mrs. Bucket really made it worth the money we spent! I would go again and take friends and family with the hopes of it being a little more organized and tighten up! P.S "Weird Al" Yankovic as the Oompa Loompas had to be the best part!

Seemed the event was not rehearsed

by Oiram on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Even though the event had big stars, it seemed as they had not rehearsed. The Charlie character, Finn Wolfhard, was obviously there only for his fame because he didn't even know any songs at all. He came out and was just walking around the stage and had no clue of what he was doing. Thank goodness for John Stamos who came out to the audience and made everyone feel special. Mr. Exposito's singing " The Candy Man" was more like screaming and the incredible singers (Elle King/Ingrid Michelson) after that were having issues with their microphones since they continued to take them out of their ears and hold them in their hands. The band seemed off tune and name violinist was just going crazy on stage as if she was following a tune, but she wasn't. The pianist at the beginning was amazing and adorable. She was really talented and just was really good. The dancers were good but just unneccessary and just weird with a guy holding a golden ticket in a suit. Weird Al is just weird Al. That was expected. It was just totally bizarre. I spent 200 per ticket and I thought it was a waste of money.

    A candy-coated mess

by SplendidConfusion on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a renowned classic loved by families for decades and this live-to-film adaptation was so poorly cobbled together. The live performances were lackluster (save for Ingrid Michaelson) and some talent even forgot the lyrics to the songs. The film stopped down at random points to incorporate odd, new, songs/sequences that weren't altogether compelling. I was really really disappointed to have spent the money I did on and experience I could've better enjoyed at home with the DVD.

    Once in A Lifetime Celebration

by Maxpiper on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The old Willy Wonka movie...? On the big screen? At the bowl?? How could this possibly be worth over a hundred bucks? Well, if you're like me, and this is your favorite movie of all time, then you would have loved it! Singers on stage, singing the songs. Special candy effects projected all over the bowl. Scratch and sniff golden tickets. Weird Al Yankovic in psychedelic suits! And costumed oompa loompa dancers running amok! Who wouldn't love that?! It was a strange and wonderful once in a lifetime gathering of people who love Wonka. Many in costumes, and all with huge grins on their faces.

Willy Wonka at the Hollywood Bowl = train wreck

    by Sophie00 on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We purchased rather up-close seats to watch the live-to-film production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and were left sorely disappointed. The actors/singers seemed unsure of their performances throughout the show and everyone seemed a bit confused. Honestly, sort of a disaster and we left early as we couldn't really handle their unprofessionalism despite such A-list actors and singers.

Willy Wonka Live to Film - parts of it were good

by WindyDindy on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I wasn't thrilled. There seemed to be a lot of microphone glitches and the choreography wasn't great. I thought John Stamos, Weird Al, and Ellie King did a good job with there songs. I liked all the SHAG decorations on the bowl walls. The smelling ticket was kind of a flop. The violin playing went on too long. The piano player was great, but not sure of the connection to the movie. The intermission seemed unnecessary. Overall, not worth the money we paid for the tickets and I wouldn't go again. The event was not sold out. I have a feeling it will be a one time thing.

    Great for all ages

Classic movie and great stage show, my kids ages 10 and 14, loved the Hollywood Bowl. Aside from the parking, everything was wonderful.

    Such a great idea!

by StephKF on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

There were a few too many musical breaks, but I’m sure it was to ensure that people got their money’s worth. The tickets were VERY expensive; half as much might have sold it out. The projections on the facade were super cool, and the outside attractions were great! Lots of fun for the family!

    Unrehearsed and forgettable...

by Shgfriends on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have attended many of these events and this one was a Trainwreck from beginning to end...seemed as if dancers learned their numbers right before hitting the stage... The movie kept coming on and off...the conductor kept looking from stage right to stage left because he never knew where anyone was coming from...long awkward pauses as if performers were never cued and ready to come on stage...I will definitely think twice before attending one of these events again!

What an endearing movie and family event

    by Nat225 on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

My nieces and nephews absolutely loved the show and agreed that the extra special effects projected on stage definitely added to the presentation of the movie. My aunt, cousin, and I felt like the kid in us was awaken on Saturday. Also, John Stamos as Willy Wonka was perfection and who can forget Werid Al’s outfits! It was truly a wonderful Saturday night.

    Interesting

    by GIANNA369 on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Not great, it just wasn't put together well. I had high hopes for the show, but it did not deliver. The best part was the end when they all played the drums together. Def not worth the almost $250 per ticket I paid.

Really unorganized... Jon Stamos was not good as willy wonka... random people on stage that literally made no sense to the story or movie. Long pauses in between acts. It looked like they never rehearsed.

    A unique presentation

by Venturasenior on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Since I had never been to a live film event before, I was not sure what to expect. But to my surprise I really enjoyed it. And my two grand kids loved it as they were very familiar with Willie Wonka.

Willy Wonka Live - I NEED MORE!

by CindyandLeia on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was by far, one of the most entertaining events I've been to. Ever. The animation on the building, the lights, the music, the sound quality, the actors, everyone and everything from beginning to end was absolutely stunning. I would've gone a second time had I had the opportunity. It was beautifully done.

    willie wonka stupendous

by lLovedance on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Super entertaining. Staging and especially lighting arcing around the bowl was brilliant. The juxtaposition of the movie and the stage players was amazing. Weird Al was wonderful, loved his singing style and his many jackets. The movie, of course, was perfect, yummy candy and a bunch of spoiled brats, excepting Charlie, a generous and thoughtful boy who had bought a chocolate bar for his grandpa and had gotten a winning ticket. Had a great time, would highly recommend, and would suggest that this be shown again.

Great Time at a Great Venue!

    by Alfredisgr8 on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was AMAZING! It was a great show at a beautiful venue! I honestly didn't know what the show was going to be--I thought it would be a short show of the songs sung by the stars billed. Instead, we got to watch the entire movie (which was GREAT, since I haven't seen it in YEARS) which was then interspersed with live performances of the musical numbers. Now, I was excited to see Weird Al--when I saw the lineup and saw he was doing the oompa loompa bits, I was instantly hooked. In my mind, I was really going to see Weird Al do my favorite bits from the movie. Also, John Stamos has a stage presence I was like, "okay, it'll be cool to see him, too." But WOW I was BLOWN AWAY by the entire show! John Stamos did a great job singing a technically difficult song with the right heart and emotion to do Gene Wilder proud. Richard Kind knocked "I've Got a Golden Ticket" out of the park--I'm a big Richard Kind fan and that song is also a great one! Weird Al was, of course, awesome; he brought the oompa loompa songs to life with his usual frenetic energy. But to me, the STAR of this performance was Giancarlo Esposito's version of the Candyman. WOW! Just an AMAZING performance, such showmanship, I was just blown away! I would pay money for a copy of Giancarlo Esposito singing that song! Also, the venue is AMAZING! I love the Hollywood Bowl--it's beautiful, it's got great food and nice places to walk around before the show. I am always looking to see what shows the Bowl has during the season because it's just a great venue and I love seeing live shows under the night sky. The shuttle service to and from the venue is THE WAY TO GO--no self parking, no uber, no buses. Overall, it was an amazing night, and I would recommend this show to anyone should it come into town again.

    Willy Wonka was great.

by GeneWilderLover on 11/7/17Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The event itself was great. The music was good. The venue vendors weren't so great. If you can't give a cup of ice, instead of lying about it, why don't you just say that you're not allowed to.
