  • Guitar Mastery

by StinkyKitty on 10/1/12Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Willy was phenomenal! He has some sort of amazing kung fu moves going on the guitar. This is the second time that I've seen him, and his mastery of finger picking and other techniques does not cease to amaze me. He's not only talented, but intelligent and super funny!

  • A true original

Willy Porter is a modern day Paul Simon. A great storyteller and songwriter, only with monster guitar skills to go along with it. I love his sense of lyricism and his ability to celebrate the beauty of everyday life. This is my 2nd time seeing him, both in intimate venues, which is the best way to enjoy live music. He is engaging and personable throughout the show, and offers up something from each part of his career, as well as some surprise covers, in this case a Peter Gabriel song. This show ended with a song that transformed into a cool performance art piece with him adding sounds to a MIDI looped track, and layering them one on top of the other until they reached a crescendo of beautiful chaos. After the show he made himself available for pictures and autographs. I would definitely see him perform again.

  • Willy Porter guitarist and lyrisist extrodinaire

    by RedRunner6651 on 11/21/11Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

If you're someone who enjoys acoustical settings and especially if you're a guitarist or other musician, what is not to like about a Willie Porter concert? He made it sound as if there were 2 or 3 other guitars playing as well as eloquently folded in lyrics that expressed some of the ironies of life and touched on some of our contemporary frustrations. Example is "How to Rob a Bank". The music allows us to laugh at ourselves and at the ironies of our modern society. He followed with more serious selections such as "Rita" which really display his awesome strumming and rhythm skills. Toward the end was the popular, humorous selection "Jesus On the Grille". Unfortunately, a patron who appeared to have had to much to drink vocally took exception to the piece as disrespectful to the Lord, far from the intent of the selection. Another fan was trying to clap to the beat of the music and was not only too loud but off the beat as well. So my only criticism of the evening was environmental, that is, alcohol sales taking place a solid hour before the concert began. BTW, it appeared that those involved in the 2 incidents above were either warned or asked to leave. Bottom line-wonderful performance and supportive behavior by the vast majority, distractive behavior by a few. We earnestly hope Wille wants to come back to Portland!

  • willy porter is da' man!

Love him. Love how he puts his entire self into his music. First group was good also. Played a tad too long and words were hard to decipher.

  • Willy Porter was an A+

Great show. Willy is a born entertainer, both musically and personality-wise. Songs were current and fun. Warm up act: Dave and Mandy were great. Look forward to Willy's return to Portland.

  • Fully Human

by Heartwoman on 11/15/11Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

What a joy is Willy Porter. Saw him at the Sister Folk Festival and came to Portland from Bend to see him again -- a bit nervous he wouldn't be able to match his amazing performances in Sisters. We were not disappointed. Willy is a bubbling bursting of life, music and creativity. He is like an alien being in his uninhibited presence, and then I think that's what fully human can look like. An inspiration -- funny, touching, sensuous, honest, kind, silly, sad and compassionate. Yup, love you, Willy.

  • Willy's free

    by firefly2 on 11/15/11Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Willy free thinking lyrics, guitar artistry and movement on stage ranks him high on the acts that have passed through the Aladdin this year. He stays out of the box and sideways in performance style. "Loose" would describe his stage presence.

Another fantastic showing by Willy. Super glad to see the show in a much more intimate venue. Can't wait until the nest show. Thanks again, Scott

Willy always puts on an excellent show.. I wonder why more people don't know about him. The Aladdin is an awesome venue.. can't even compare to the Rosegarden (BOOOO). Back to WP.. excellent performer.. gets the crowd involved.. I can't wait for him to come again next year. We'll be back.. and are forever fans!
