WILCO IN CONCERT:

Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.

new venue is a great option

by alu on 10/18/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

As someone who goes to a lot of live music I've been to a lot of venues. Well acquainted with Terragram and Another Planet the opening of the Bellwether had me curious. Over the 29 years Wilco has been around I have seen them in a good number of venues. When it was announced the Wilco would play the Bellwether as part of the fall '23 tour dates it was a show I was anxious to see. Love the wide open space, most of the design and flow of the Bellwether and walking into a nice new, clean venue was great. Appreciate the number of places to grab food and drinks and there are a great number of stalls in the nice bathrooms Love that you can move around from the main floor to the balcony. Love the view from the Virginian and that you can get some great bites and drinks there. Add on price for The Looking Glass Lounge was pretty steep so I didn't bite and check that out. Wish the main floor was sloped. For the first time in the place Wilco's house sound was pretty good and the crowd energy was great but Wilco's audio was more dialed in at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel the previous week. Hopefully Wilco will return to The Bellwether and sound will be more optimal on a repeat visit. Nice to have an option to see Wilco in both a seated and a new standing venue in LA. Will return to The Bellwether for other bands and would be happy to see Wilco here again.

    Obstructed View for Front-Row Seats

    by WilcoFan4Years on 10/18/23Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Wilco was outstanding - as always. Absolutely great show. Had front-row seats. The front of the stage at ground/seat level was lined by large speakers that partially obstructed the view of the performers. Even when standing. The tickets, which were top-priced, did not list "partial-view". The speakers were literally five feet from the front-row seats. I measured 130db at one point. Come on Berkeley Greek!?! Think of you audience. And Ticketmaster, please disclose "partial view"when applicable.

    Wilco reigns o’er me, revisited

by Hankster on 10/17/23Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Tweedy & Co. continue to roll, as one of the truly great American treasures of the touring realm. Mixing the new songs from ‘Cousin’ with ole favorites, the band is akin to yer well-worn jeans, or fave Harborcoat; they warm you with familiar lyrics + hummable melodies. The long-time fans, as well as newbies, reflected the joy abounding through the sounds at the Greek, a circulatory love-fest. The Nels Cline guitar progressions/explorations during “Impossible Germany” were peak Greek sonic highs. Wilco’s “Shot in the Arm” (for the) “Heavy Metal Drummer” kept the beat bouncing, as audience assisted. Great Tweedy songs, played to perfection. Near the end, Jeff saluted the area for “creating the rock concert”—a culmination of rock excellence.

    Impossible Cline

    by Criti-California on 10/17/23Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Wilco brought the stylistic folk-metal vibe to the Greek. I say metal because drummer Glen Kotche brought what sounded equal parts Metal and country playing. Wilco and Tweedy paid homage for the musical history of the setting in their jam band approach for the set while still lamenting the tie die assault the SF Bay had on Jeff’s son causing a lament of “look what you dirty hippies did to my son”. Nels Cline never disappoints and his adaptation of the epic “Impossible Germany” solo part is something to be examined. Sound was perfect and all the new material played felt other worldly for them and left me with the impression that this band is really undergoing yet another evolution.

    Wilco loves you baby

by Mendo Mom on 10/17/23Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

What an incredible show, they played all of Wilcos greatest hits!! I was in the 4th row and view was so great. I’m so glad I made the 4 hour drive south to see them. Thanks Jeff Tweedy and the boys for an awesome night. The only negative thing was No Chardonnay and the food and drinks were way overpriced. Next time I’ll eat before the show.

    Not my favorite Wilco gig

by Dadrock.co on 10/16/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

I've probably seen Wilco a dozen times. Seeing them at the Bellweather - a standing room only rock club - was probably the most intimate settting I've seen them in years. So that was cool. However it felt like the setlist should reflect the venue and ROCK more. The first half of the set was heavy with mid-tempo tracks that didn't really get the crowd moving. Things started to get more interesting for the last third or so of the show - Impossible Germany was an epic Wilco jam; Jesus, Etc is always a crowd pleaser. It just felt like they should factor the setting of the concert when formulating the setlist. For example, hearing a song like Cruel Country at the SB Bowl would fit better than the Bellweather. Also, to be fair, I'm getting old...my days seeing bands in these G/A standing venues may be numbered. I'm always down to (dad)rock but sometimes you just want to take a seat.

    great band terrible venue

by hummingbird on 10/15/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

Wilco is great, they could play in a dumpster and be good. The Bellwether is just a box with bad sound, terrible viewability throughout the room and awful access via parking, public transport, or even ride share drop off. I won't see a show there again. But I will definitely see Wilco again (and again)

    Wilco + Bellwether = Excellent

by GeorgeJ on 10/14/23The Bellwether - Los Angeles

Wilco continue to combine great songwriting with outstanding musical performances. This new album is one of their best. The setlist also drew heavily from their classic, A Ghost Is Born, and thrived on the brilliant soloists. For my first time at the Bellwether, I was pleasantly surprised. The sound and lighting were flawless. There are plenty of friendly servers to supply drinks from their (limited) menu. Everything is clean and well laid-out, including the restrooms. I am grateful for the chance to see Wilco in such an intimate venue, and look forward to returning.

Great venue! Been there twice now. Like the upstairs lounge and bar area, easy parking and even though sold out wasn’t overcrowded. Up close and personal experience!

Outstanding musicians and a great concert

by BB on 10/4/23Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center - Albuquerque

We had not attended a concert at the Kiva in the ABQ Convention Center and didn’t know what to expect for acoustics and being able to see the performance area. We were pleasantly impressed with the venue at the Kiva. Good visibility, great acoustics, comfortable seating and easy to get around. It was also easy to park and leave after the concert. The concert itself was excellent! Jeff Tweedie and the rest of the band are exceptional musicians and played a mix of new songs and old standbys. It was two hours of good music and showmanship. The audience recognized that we had an incredible talent performing and responded accordingly with respectful encouragement. Overall it was an excellent evening of enjoyable performances and well mannered concert attendees.
