WILCO IN CONCERT:

Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.

    Catalog of songs was amazing

by jenh on 7/4/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Really enjoyed the concert. The Red Rock venue is a breathtaking place to see a show and Wilco rocked out. They played a good mix of songs from all of their albums. Can't wait to see them again.

Opening of the show was mellow, but the double encore was amazing! Made the entire show worthwhile.

    Best Wilco show ever!!!

by Zigsrig on 7/4/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

I've gone to ever Wilco tour since "Being There" and last night's show was the best one I've seen since! Outstanding! Even though we had to park a mile away it was worth it. They played songs from their entire catalog and the show was nearly three hours long. You always get your money's worth at a Wilco show! Wilco loves you baby!!!

The Wilco show was amazing... Mind bowing!! Jeff Tweedy is such an amazing entertainer and John Stirratt's solo blew every one away. The two encore's were definitely appreciated! We didn't want the night to end!!

    red rocks

by 100bandsb419 on 7/4/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Jeff tweety proves once again that his esoteric lyrics and songwriting are unparalleled in rock music. Every song had some form of delight. The ampitheater is probably the best outdoor music place on the globe but having been to so many at that venue I can start with a level playing field. There were two rockin lead guitars often dueling for attention and the talent was obvious. Nils was particularly querky but at the same time awesome. The crowd seemed somewhat subdued at first but after a few strategic hooks by the keyboard player (who also doubled as the second lead guitar), no on was able to stay seated. (except of course, the shroom eaters who were not sure where they were) There were several jumps in time from 1994 to the present and even a mention of a new album but it was not shamelessly promoted and if you knew the recording you sang along. All in all, quite enjoyable and captured me as a huge fan even though going in I was only a casual observer. I will relisten to many songs with renewed rapture!

    Strong effort

by YoDiddly on 7/4/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Wilco isn't one of these acts that comes out for 90 minutes and then knock off. Jeff Tweedy and company play for a full three hours and they obviously enjoy their work. Nice blend of material from their latest release plus an excellent overview of their older material.

Great night at Red Rocks. Okkervil opened strong. Would like to see them in a smaller venue though. Wilco was tight from start thru second encore. Great show!

A fantastic set! Okkervil River hit hard and sounded great, then Wilco came out and played for nearly 2 and a half hours!

My first time seeing them. They were great!

by pfelser on 7/1/09The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Wow! What an incredibly talented band. I hopped on the bandwagon a little late. But I was really excited to see these guys for the first time. And they did not disappoint. Jeff was really engaged with the crowd. Nels Cline was absolutely amazing on guitar. The entire band was so tight throughout the entire show, thrilling the crowd with a number of songs from their earlier albums. Truly impressive to see a band of such professional musicians.
