Whoopi Goldberg on Tour

For all her achievements in theater, movies and television, Whoopi Goldberg has never lost her reverence for the connections she forges with audiences at her reliably outrageous stand-up performances.

Her appearance in November, 2019 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City marked another milestone for a performer who first came to wider attention with Whoopi Goldberg, the one-woman stage show she brought to Broadway with the help of director Mike Nichols in 1984. The acclaim for her skills drew the notice of Steven Spielberg, who cast her in the lead role of The Color Purple. Goldberg's Academy Award nomination led to her successful run in a huge variety of dramas and comedies, including such smash hits as Ghost in 1990 and Sister Act two years later.

Her forays into television include her Emmy-winning run as executive producer and resident "center square" personality on her revival of the game show Hollywood Squares. Never afraid to share her views, Goldberg continues to elicit laughs and provoke thoughts as the moderator of ABC's The View.

In March of 2019, she appeared at New York's Beacon Theatre as cohost for Love Rocks NYC, the star-studded annual benefit for the nonprofit organization God's Love We Deliver.

Whoopi Goldberg Background

Born and raised in New York, Whoopi Goldberg caught the performing bug at an early age. Her first audiences were the relatives who gave Goldberg her distinctive nickname, comparing the aspiring comedian to a whoopee cushion.

Her years studying comedy and theater in California and New York led to the development of the characters who filled her first stage hit, which was named The Spook Show before she and director Mike Nichols brought it to Broadway as Whoopi Goldberg in 1984. In 1985, she earned an Academy Award nomination for her first major screen role, in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. That launched a movie career that has included such beloved films as Ghost, Sister Act and The Lion King.

Among her television credits are her groundbreaking talk show The Whoopi Goldberg Show and the Emmy-nominated NBC sitcom Whoopi. Her Emmy-winning revival of Hollywood Squares ran from 1998 to 2004. In 2007, she joined Barbara Walters on ABC's The View as the show's new moderator.

One of America's most decorated performers, Goldberg is among the few to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Her other honors include two Golden Globes, a Drama Desk Award, two American Comedy Awards, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

She was wonderfully funny. She does not tell jokes, she tells stories. Wonderfully funny stories about her life that you can relate to in your life. They may not be exactly the same but you know someone that is like the people she talks about and sometime you see yourself in her.

  • Whoopi was great, down to earth and honest

I'm very glad I went to her show. It was a great pick me up and just what I needed. As far as the time she spent answering questions, I didn't mind this because it gave me an opportunity to see how she interacted with people on a one on one basis without performing. My favorite part was - When Whoopi decribed how the f word was a better choice to use rather than saying something or someone is stupid. You can't smile when you say stupid :-)

  • Ms Whoopi is da Bomb!!

She is and has always been a great entertainer. It is a testament to her greatness that she attracts such a diverse crowd, young, old, all races and nationalities, gay, straight; etc. She is a national treasure and so LOVED!!!

Whoopi's still got it! Very funny routine...Q&A session was problem for me. People don't "listen". Everybody trying to get handshakes, pics and etc. when she tells you up front that it's something she can't do.

She is amazing! This was the most diverse audience I have seen in a long time. Black, white, gay, straight, young, old. It was a privilege to be there. I appreciate her openness with humor. She has a true gift.

Phenomenal woman. I went because I relate to Whoopi on every level - intellectual, life, cultural consciousness, and vibration. Excellent venue...my first, but not last, visit.

  • Whoopi ... hmmm

by UlyBro on 9/24/14Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

Did not know what to expect. Going in I though Whoopi would provide some polished stand-up comedy routine, she did not. She mentioned that she was not a stand-up comedian. So as I settled into the event I thought that she would provide some thought provoking yet light hearted discussion on politics or social events, etc. She did not. I felt that she fumbled around on and although some of her stuff was funny it was hard to enjoy the entire event. I really did not like that she simply relied on audience questions for about 1/3 of the event.

I like Whoopie, but she used too much profanity. I won't go see her again in concert, but will continue to enjoy her on the view, etc.

  • Whoopi

by LindaTena on 9/24/14Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Whoopi performance was excellent and she kept her show 100 real. The show started on time which is always a great thang. I liked the way that she conducted a question and answer section after her show. What I really enjoyed is how she personally acknowledged the elderly people in her audience and she even took the time to sign autographs for others.

  • Greatest Stand Up

by tate1955 on 9/23/14Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Whoopi's performance was the funniest comedy that I have ever attended. I see why she makes the big bucks unlike some of her colleagues.

  • Whoopi Goldberg in Atlanta

by FaithSays on 9/23/14Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Whoopi Goldberg was awesome, entertaining and honest. I laughed the night away. The question and answer session was wonderful and unexpected, but it was funny too. She welcomed us into her world and made us feel at home. She was caring and understanding to those who didn't quite understand her humor as well. Great show Whoopi.

Been a long time since I laughed so hard. Whoopi was warm and personable. A very diverse audience could relate to her. She'd be my most favorite person to have lunch with. I've been a fan for years and I'm so grateful for the chance to see her live. She is an amazing performer, required no props, fancy lighting or multiple costume changes. Yet the audience was totally captivated.

Fantastic doesn't do this justice! Loved the Centre (first time) and loved everything about the show. I would go to this Centre anytime..much better than going into downtown Atlanta!

  • Witty and Honest, great stories and jokes

by TRHandDGH on 9/23/14Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We have not seen Whoopi for over 20 years, and she was as sharp, witty, and yes "honest" as always. During the Q&A one patron took her to task for one joke, but she explained her position well. Everyone loved the show. The only issue was that there were big signs outside the doors saying "performer wants no guns" and hence we went thru airport-like screening. I do not blame Whoopi, I blame the new gun law in GA that made these signs even necessary. I have attended other similar recent events at Cobb and no such signs. Should be standard practice, not set by each performer.
