About

Whoopi Goldberg on Tour

For all her achievements in theater, movies and television, Whoopi Goldberg has never lost her reverence for the connections she forges with audiences at her reliably outrageous stand-up performances.

Her appearance in November, 2019 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City marked another milestone for a performer who first came to wider attention with Whoopi Goldberg, the one-woman stage show she brought to Broadway with the help of director Mike Nichols in 1984. The acclaim for her skills drew the notice of Steven Spielberg, who cast her in the lead role of The Color Purple. Goldberg's Academy Award nomination led to her successful run in a huge variety of dramas and comedies, including such smash hits as Ghost in 1990 and Sister Act two years later.

Her forays into television include her Emmy-winning run as executive producer and resident "center square" personality on her revival of the game show Hollywood Squares. Never afraid to share her views, Goldberg continues to elicit laughs and provoke thoughts as the moderator of ABC's The View.

In March of 2019, she appeared at New York's Beacon Theatre as cohost for Love Rocks NYC, the star-studded annual benefit for the nonprofit organization God's Love We Deliver.

Whoopi Goldberg Background

Born and raised in New York, Whoopi Goldberg caught the performing bug at an early age. Her first audiences were the relatives who gave Goldberg her distinctive nickname, comparing the aspiring comedian to a whoopee cushion.

Her years studying comedy and theater in California and New York led to the development of the characters who filled her first stage hit, which was named The Spook Show before she and director Mike Nichols brought it to Broadway as Whoopi Goldberg in 1984. In 1985, she earned an Academy Award nomination for her first major screen role, in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. That launched a movie career that has included such beloved films as Ghost, Sister Act and The Lion King.

Among her television credits are her groundbreaking talk show The Whoopi Goldberg Show and the Emmy-nominated NBC sitcom Whoopi. Her Emmy-winning revival of Hollywood Squares ran from 1998 to 2004. In 2007, she joined Barbara Walters on ABC's The View as the show's new moderator.

One of America's most decorated performers, Goldberg is among the few to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Her other honors include two Golden Globes, a Drama Desk Award, two American Comedy Awards, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

She was not very funny. Q & A at the end of the show? Really! She was not prepared to entertain.

Whoopi was amazingly funny! She was so hilarious she had me laughing so hard, my stomach muscles hurt and brought tears in my eyes. It felt good to laugh like that again. Whoopi has a way about her that when she voices her opinion, I don't feel offended. She is so honest and frank with her opinions and I highly respect her for that. I also respect Whoopi for always being herself and never out to try to impress anyone. She is so humble about all her accomplishments and awards. Whoopi is on the top of my list of favorite people. Whoopi can return to Grand Rapids, MI and I will go see her again!

  • Whoopi was sensational

Laughter was heard from her first joke to her last joke. Even the Q&A was funny at times and serious when needed.

  • Whoopi!

Although many stories were reruns, that would only be from watching her on The View. Here, at least, we could hear her talk unimpeded by censors or time. It was interesting to watch her work the material and the crowd. She explained why she doesn't do her original characters any longer. This was an older, wiser Whoopi, now able to give her perspective on life at 56, yet still able to relate back to her childhood - certainly almost everyone in the audience could relate to her stories. Graphic, but observations that were spot-on. It was like being with an old friend, not an other-worldly celeb. Thanks, Whoopi.

Whoopi was great, her act was right on! However the venue could have been better. From the side where I was sitting the sound was not good at all, as there was a echo. The question and answer part of the show should be completely eliminated. She had great energy going then you took all of that and changed the whole format and it sucked the energy right out of the room! VERY BAD IDEA! Also it was very very evident that she was not comfortable with many of the questions. When ever you have a open mike you make sure that the questions are screened before hand.

  • Whoopi was funny and real

Whoopi was funny and real, It is not family material so be prepared just like she said when she came out it is not Sister act or the View 18+ I would see her again if it was local but wouldn't travel a long distance to see her. Her material is who she is not something made up.Did not like the half hour of audience asking her questions at the end I would rather of heard a half hour more of her material.

  • Whoopi was funny from the second the show started!

I haven't been in tears over laughter in a long time. I was in tears for about 45 minutes straight over laughing so hard. My wife was emotional when Whoopi first came on stage because Whoopi has been an icon in the comedy business for a long time.

  • Pure Whoopi

We loved the show. It was a bit more blue than I thought she would be, however, she came across as the 'star' she truly is! We would see her again in a minute!

  • Whoopi G was fantastic

The show was extremely good. Whoopi was very funny, but she also had several messages to give to the audience. She had a Q and A session after her show. Very Good Show!!!

  • Fabulous Whoopi

    by Dougie479 on 3/11/12Gilda's Laughfest - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

Very funny ......this woman talks about everything......warns everyone up front that this is an adult show. No topic is off limits, and all are hilarious. Very enjoyable evening. But, the end was badly handled. Never give a microphone to a Grand Rapids audience. Terrible, off topic questions by the audience.

Because I love Whoopi and have for years, I would recommend friends go and see her sometime in their life. Maybe not this particular event only because I didn't feel I received my monies worth. Whoopi was funny, but her material could have been more current and not so directed toward woman and their personals. What was the Q&A all about? I didn't pay for others to ask her to join them after the show or to ask to take a picture with her, etc. I was surprised and just expected more from my beloved Whoopi.

  • Whoopi was amazing

She is as funny and relevant as ever. I am so glad we had the chance to see her live and in person! If you get the chance do not pass it up. I laughed non-stop from start to finish!

I took my mom to see Whoopi as a birthday present. We both LOVED it. Whoopi's observations are timely and relatable. I can't speak for the men, but any woman would LOVE this show!!! I was crying at one point from laughing so hard! Whoopi has been entertaining us on TV and at the movies for decades, getting to see her in person is even better! If Whoopi comes to your town, don't hesitate to get tickets!

So great to see Whoopie share in only a way she can. Spotted her having dinner and playing the slots. Enjoying the casino amenities with the rest of us. Very cool, indeed.

Whoopi was in good spirit, but the material was primarily bathroom humor, with few humerous observations or stories. Her intent to shock the audience suceeded, not bothering me but 45 minutes of menstruation, bikini waxing and bowel movements seemed quite lazy. She covered a couple of the topics twice, with little difference. After 60 minutes on stage, she switched to 20 minutes of Q & A from the audience, which was not well planned or particularly interesting. It seemed like filler so the show wouldn't end at 60 minutes.
