About

In his 1942 essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus wrote that "All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant's revolving door." 15 years later Richard Wayne Penniman wrote "Wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boom", an undeniably powerful vocalization that on any given Wednesdayin any given situation, civilized or otherwise, is still fully capable of setting somebody's stuff aflame. Over ten years and seven long players into their career, White Denim are still in the relentless pursuit of a thread - in other words, a wick.

The Austin, Texas band have carefully and continuously studied the greatest records ever made, but they write songs just dumb enough to drink, dance, and fight to. Theirs is a music that aims for the whole body, while equally satisfying the mind. While it has morphed, expanded, and even burst apart, White Denim's sincere and human drive and ability to spark true rock & roll exhilaration have been unerring constants of the band's 10-year existence.

"White Denim are one of the best live bands you will ever see if you live to be a million. That's not excitable hyperbole, merely a bald statement of undeniable fact..." -- Time Out

"The last great rock & roll band!" -- The Guardian

Just don't bring the energy live

by awinsto5 on 9/13/18house of blues - Chicago

I hate to have to leave anything less than 4 or 5 stars, and I rarely do. I wanted so much to like these guys live as much as I do on studio recordings. But in person, their sound is muddy, and they are not able to capture any crowd energy. What's more, after listening and watching closely, I'm fairly certain that they used a rhythm guitar loop on occasion, and possibly even background vocal loops. They have talent, it's just disorganized and misdirected.

    White Denim always rocks!

    by oiseau777 on 7/27/16The Hollow - Albany

Great set, non stop music. really tight performance. After seeing White Denim six times this was the first time with their new line up. Very interesting to see how they did the old songs without two guitars.

    A great time

by mercolino on 7/24/16The Stone Pony - Asbury Park

This was the second time I saw White Denim on this tour. Once in Philadelphia in April and this show at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. First of all let me say, I love this band, I love their music, I have all their albums and have been into them for a few years now. I was a little disappointed at this show, however. The opening act (Gods) was a bit unoriginal and although musically they were solid, they didn't belong on the same bill as White Denim. So this started the night out on the wrong foot for me. In April, White Denim had a second guitar player and a different drummer. While the drummer change didn't seem to make a difference, the lack of the second guitar player really did. The band also seemed like they were a whole lot less energetic than they were in April and this show sounded like a cover band of the show I saw in Philadelphia. Everyone has an off day, oh well. Now all this being said, I would still go and see White Denim again, second guitar player or not. As far as the Stone Pony being so exalted, on par with other places of similar character, it is only just average at best. There are worse places to go, but then again, there definitely are better. Given another act that I like coming to play there, I would probably skip it for another venue unless I had some other reason to be down there.

    Not the same WD

by Tgaito on 4/25/16The Sinclair - Cambridge

Went into the show with a tiny bit of hesitation due to the recent lineup change and unfortunately my fears came true. The guys just didn't have the energy I saw in thier last 3 outings. James seemed like he was going through the motions and the new guitar player isn't even close to holding the stage prescence and his guitar chops pale im comparison to Austins. Maybe James and Steve are still trying to get over Austin and Josh splitting; I don't know. What I do know is that the White Denim who puts on THE most energetic and guitar noodly amazement was not present @ this show.

    Very talented musicians!

by MsDolly10 on 9/17/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Very good show! White Denim are very talented musicians and I saw them for the very first time. Unfortunately they had to stop only after playing for 1/2 hour because the fire alarm was someway somehow triggered and all the people had to leave the venue first. People were let in again after the fire fighters had checked the complete venue.

    White Denim infectious energy

by JBHNYC on 9/15/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Terrific show at a very small venue. I had no idea that these guys were so tight. Their lead singer James Petralli is incredibly talented.

    Greatly exceeded expectations!

by BRENTTD on 2/28/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

I've only been into White Denim for a few years, but having seen them live...all of the cds now open up quite a bit. My wife and friends see alot of shows regularily and have been concert-goers since the 1970s. White Denim is one of the most impressive, dynamic, satisfying events I have ever witnessed. I am most often friendly and favorable to the bands I see but this is the first time i've ever been moved to provide feedback. This band has yet to surpass the cult following and they very much deserve to. Hopefully seeing them live will turn more people on to thier cds. Fans of art/progressive rock, southern jam bands and ridiculously tight musicmanship will not be disappointed.

    White Denim, Me Likey

by WalksTop on 4/20/12The Basement - Columbus

White Denim is amazing. They are captivating on stage, and their skills are out of this world! Great to see them live... I would LOVE to see them at a music festival. That to me would be the perfect setting to see them and really enjoy it. It was pretty loud for this small of a venue. The mixing seemed a little off... the balance was iffy. But bottom line, I would see them again in a heartbeat!

by CaityRiot on 4/19/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Played an awesome 2hr show. Saw them perform at Bowery ballroom, which is a bad ass venue. It's a smaller venue so the acoustics are amazing.
