Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale

Each winter, the best players in golf descend upon the Grand Canyon State to participate in the legendary Phoenix Open. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is conducted on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, which opened in 1987 specifically to host this event. The Phoenix Open is famous for its rowdy setting, and for being the most widely attended event on the PGA Tour. The 2020 edition, taking place from January 30 to February 2, coincides with the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series from January 29 to February 1, featuring such acts as Miranda Lambert, G-Eazy, Dierks Bentley and Kygo.

Waste Management Phoenix Open History

The first Arizona Open was held at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1932, and then off and on until the mid 1940s. Bob Goldwater Sr. helped keep the tournament alive after it was discontinued from 1936 to 1938, and the 1939 tournament, which featured Byron Nelson defeating Ben Hogan by 12 strokes, was the turning point that made what was by then known as the Phoenix Open into a must-see attraction on the PGA Tour. Some of the greatest legends in golf have made their mark in the Phoenix Open. Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia and Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson have all won three times at the event. Other notable winners include Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh, and 2016 and 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Since 1973, the Phoenix Open has coincided with Super Bowl weekend, leading to some scheduling quirks when nearby Tempe or Glendale hosts the big game. The scheduling conflict has also affected its coverage, leading to a unique agreement where NBC airs the tournament when CBS airs the Super Bowl, and CBS airs the Honda Classic in years where NBC airs the Winter Olympics. The 1976 edition, in which Bob Gilder won his first PGA tournament, was watched by over 22 million people as the lead-out program to Super Bowl X on CBS. In 1997, only a few months before wowing the world at the Masters, Tiger Woods hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. In 2019, Rickie Fowler won by two strokes over South African Branden Grace.

    What a venue!

    by t00muchtr0uble on 2/4/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

Easy in and out. Great course and LOTS of places to view great golf being played, but hands down, 16 is where the action is, and no, drinking was not a part of the draw for us. Everyone around us (in the bleachers by the green) was respectful.

    Great experience

by Pactola on 2/4/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

Great Experience. Just a few things; did not like the crowd behavior on #16 or the spectators smoking along the course. Next year skip the planes with banners. Very noisy!!

    party

by Ordy on 2/4/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

The golf course is great for being able to see different shots from one spot . They keep adding more spots for drinkers and then it seems like they are only going after the partiers and not people who care about the game of golf. I would recommend that you see it at least once but if you don't like fighting crowds then do not try to follow the big name golfers.

Our first visit to a Professional Golf Tournament! It is a beautiful course and the weather was amazing. Everyone was friendly from the bus driver to the ground keepers! Very walkable and great views of the players. Certainly be on our calendar for next year!

    Golf Tournament was Crazy fun

    by Wilson01 on 2/13/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

The best spectator golf tournament! The players are amazing. The fans are wild. The people watching is fantastic. You can't get any better than the TPC for watching professional golfers. and on such a pristine course. Saturday was a record setting day with over 204,000 people but there is plenty of lawn space to watch the tournament We have been to the tournament before many times, and would definitely go again

    Phoenix Open

by Katluver on 2/9/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

One of the best golfing venues I have attended. Excellent grandstands, food, and bathroom facilities. Viewings of greens are easily accessible, even on the infamous 16th hole. Great shuttle service. Lots of fun.

    Waste Management Phoenix Open

    by Kimog9011 on 2/8/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

First time attending this event. TV does not do it justice. It was a blast, spent two of our three days camped out on the 16th hole. Bring lots of money for beer! Over 200k people on Saturday but around 60k on Sunday. Friday was busy as well but not bad. Great organization, easy free parking, good food and drink, plenty of available bathrooms. We'd recommend this tournament to anyone who likes both golf and partying. AZ weather was perfect!

    Volunteer worker screws up

by FlashTwo on 2/8/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

Everything else went well and it is a fun event to attend. But, in the play-offs an overzealous volunteer closed the number 17 crossing while players were still on the number 10 green. He refused, with police back-up to open it. So we moved to try to get someplace else. Only to find that he did give in to the crowd chanting and opened it up. By the time we got back and to the front, he closed it right in front of us again. First bad decision was to close it early and not let the crowd through but then to re-open it didn't make sense. We missed the final hole. I think he might have been getting instructions from a field marshal who is the one who screwed it up.

    Too much drunken debauchery

by Halac on 2/8/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

I'm sure this event is fun for the college crowd and men who enjoy scantily clad women, which actually I enjoy, as well. However, there were just too many people at the event and far too many of them were drunken idiots. I took my wife, who is from Thailand, and she was shocked at the behavior of the crowd. It was like being at a frat party. I was embarrassed it was so bad. On top of the huge crowd and drunkenness, it was difficult to find any comfortable vantage points. We spent the entire time walking from hole to hole which was OK, but, never really saw much action. My main goal was to get out of there early enough not to have deal with the masses. After experiencing this debacle, I will stick to watching golf on the TV in the future. Let the idiots waste their time and money.

A great party but not for the serious golfer

by blazebutane on 2/7/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

As a person who loves the game and attends tournaments for another chance to be out on the course & watch the pros, this one was way too crowded. Attended on the busiest day (Saturday) which didn't help matters. All the concession stands were over-crowded, lines at least 30 minutes long. Many rowdy drunk attendees, not sure how the pros kept their concentration. Most of the top names not there, I've heard in part because of the disrespect in the crowd. Waited 40 minutes in line just to get back onto bus back to parking lot. No signage in lots so hundreds of people walking around trying to find their car. All that being said, it's a big fun party for anyone looking to pick up a date. I am glad that the organizers are able to make lots of money. Just wish there was a way to separate the extreme party from the game so we could all enjoy the day.

    Must Love Crowds

by NickNol on 2/7/17TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

This is a beautiful course and there lots of room to roam around. Also, if you're not following the leaders, it is possible to see some good golf but the overall vibe of the place is a "frat party". I would estimate a good 50% of the people are not there to see golf but to be at a large event. With over 200,000 people there, you end up squished together trying to watch a putt where some shirtless drunk guy is yelling obscenities at the players and girls are almost falling over in high heel platforms with a drink in each hand. So, if that all sounds good to you, I'd recommend the WM Open.
