Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale

Each winter, the best players in golf descend upon the Grand Canyon State to participate in the legendary Phoenix Open. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is conducted on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, which opened in 1987 specifically to host this event. The Phoenix Open is famous for its rowdy setting, and for being the most widely attended event on the PGA Tour. The 2020 edition, taking place from January 30 to February 2, coincides with the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series from January 29 to February 1, featuring such acts as Miranda Lambert, G-Eazy, Dierks Bentley and Kygo.

Waste Management Phoenix Open History

The first Arizona Open was held at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1932, and then off and on until the mid 1940s. Bob Goldwater Sr. helped keep the tournament alive after it was discontinued from 1936 to 1938, and the 1939 tournament, which featured Byron Nelson defeating Ben Hogan by 12 strokes, was the turning point that made what was by then known as the Phoenix Open into a must-see attraction on the PGA Tour. Some of the greatest legends in golf have made their mark in the Phoenix Open. Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia and Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson have all won three times at the event. Other notable winners include Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh, and 2016 and 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Since 1973, the Phoenix Open has coincided with Super Bowl weekend, leading to some scheduling quirks when nearby Tempe or Glendale hosts the big game. The scheduling conflict has also affected its coverage, leading to a unique agreement where NBC airs the tournament when CBS airs the Super Bowl, and CBS airs the Honda Classic in years where NBC airs the Winter Olympics. The 1976 edition, in which Bob Gilder won his first PGA tournament, was watched by over 22 million people as the lead-out program to Super Bowl X on CBS. In 1997, only a few months before wowing the world at the Masters, Tiger Woods hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. In 2019, Rickie Fowler won by two strokes over South African Branden Grace.

    Second round action

    by GolffanAtic22 on 2/5/12TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

Went with a friend that was recovering from surgery. The only comment was that there were not enough rest areas to catch his breath ie benches. The facility was well organized and had ample help around. The area around the 16th hole had run out of hot dogs and brats. All in all a great experience along with the ability to get close to the Players.

I was able to go to the golf tournament on 2 different days. I would recommend going during the pro am rather than a tournament day. The pros are more willing to give autographs and the crowds are much smaller. Then again if you are there for the crowd and the loud 16th hole you can't get that unless you go during the tournament.

    Truely an amazing experience!!

by gabisland on 2/5/12TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

We were amazed that this tournament was so well organized and moved thousands of people around the course. The way the course is designed, with lots of hills around the fairways and greens, it is possible to see all the action, either close up along the ropes or standing up on a hill. The volunteers were knowledgable and very friendly. Sitting in the bleachers at the 16th hole if totally a fun experience. We had a blast and will definately go again next year.

Great event, shuttle service was the worst

    by shoeex1 on 2/4/12TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

First time at this event. Fun venue, easy to watch the players up close. Crowds weren't bad on Thursday. Food and drink all cost $7, not allowed to carry in food. What was really disappointing was that having been to the Tucson TPC last year and Barrett Jackson this year with timely return shuttles to your car we walked out of this event to stand in line and were told it would be an hour and forty-five minutes before we would step on a bus!!! This is very poor planning and execution. The only negative of the whole event. We ended up walking back to our car (along with many others), about a 50 minute fast paced walk from the golf course to our car at WestWorld.

    Tournament vs. Birdsnest

by Steph7 on 3/1/10Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale - Scottsdale

The tournament was amazing! The set-up was incredible! I can't believe how well it was organized. Nor can I believe how much fun it was. The birdsnest was the not well planned. As soon as I walked in I remarked to my friends "this is a disaster waiting to happen." Approximately 15 cops surrounded a person that had most likely been punched. We couldn't get in to the birdsnet as both entrances were packed with more people than the entry could hold. Getting a beer took 25 minutes. We finally got in and had an amazing time. O.A.R put on an incredible performance! We were finally able to get a drink and enjoy ourselves. However if you had to go to the bathroom you had to hold tight or head for the bathrooms. Seems simple, right? No! The fire marshal would not allow anyone to re-enter even though you had a ticket in hand. The event was clearly oversold.

The young players are ciming on strong!

by stephrob on 3/1/10Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale - Scottsdale

The lead switched many times, but the young players like Yang and Fowler showed their skills and Mahan's win should be the start of a string of wins.

Watching all the players come thru the 16th hole!

by TASA on 3/1/10Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale - Scottsdale

It's was our first time attending an event like this, so we didn't know what to expect, etc. We got there at 8:00 am in the morning, went to the 16th hole and sat front row. We stood the whole time and the group of guys that were next to us had been attending for 3 years. It was so exciting to watch all the players come thru the 16th hole and cheer them on...It was a great experience, a great day, had so much fun! We are going back next year and making it a tradition! Loved it! My favorite moment was when I caught Ricky Barnes's golf ball on the 16th hole and my boyfriend caught Phil Mickelson's golf ball! Great Souvenirs that we will always remember! I love Ricky Barnes and I'm such a big fan, so to catch that golf ball was a dream come true! My boyfriend was thrilled to catch Phil's because he is a Phil Bigtime Fan! So we were both so excited the whole day!

    OH MY GOD!!!!!!

by BlueBeard on 2/28/10Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale - Scottsdale

I have never been to a golf event that I have had so much fun. There are more smoking hot women here than any one place I have ever been. WOW!!! You will need to use the Vegas rules. "What you do here needs to stay here".

    #16 is amazing

by pmbs on 2/26/10Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale - Scottsdale

beautiful course and fairly easy to maneuver. loved seeing the 16th hole since it is certainly a different atmosphere and setup. much better than the Accenture which is so hilly.
