Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale

Each winter, the best players in golf descend upon the Grand Canyon State to participate in the legendary Phoenix Open. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is conducted on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, which opened in 1987 specifically to host this event. The Phoenix Open is famous for its rowdy setting, and for being the most widely attended event on the PGA Tour. The 2020 edition, taking place from January 30 to February 2, coincides with the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series from January 29 to February 1, featuring such acts as Miranda Lambert, G-Eazy, Dierks Bentley and Kygo.

Waste Management Phoenix Open History

The first Arizona Open was held at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1932, and then off and on until the mid 1940s. Bob Goldwater Sr. helped keep the tournament alive after it was discontinued from 1936 to 1938, and the 1939 tournament, which featured Byron Nelson defeating Ben Hogan by 12 strokes, was the turning point that made what was by then known as the Phoenix Open into a must-see attraction on the PGA Tour. Some of the greatest legends in golf have made their mark in the Phoenix Open. Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia and Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson have all won three times at the event. Other notable winners include Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh, and 2016 and 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Since 1973, the Phoenix Open has coincided with Super Bowl weekend, leading to some scheduling quirks when nearby Tempe or Glendale hosts the big game. The scheduling conflict has also affected its coverage, leading to a unique agreement where NBC airs the tournament when CBS airs the Super Bowl, and CBS airs the Honda Classic in years where NBC airs the Winter Olympics. The 1976 edition, in which Bob Gilder won his first PGA tournament, was watched by over 22 million people as the lead-out program to Super Bowl X on CBS. In 1997, only a few months before wowing the world at the Masters, Tiger Woods hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. In 2019, Rickie Fowler won by two strokes over South African Branden Grace.

    Early is better

by Lcwilson on 2/7/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

We got to the event early & saw the big players tee off which was brilliant. Then the day went downhill from there. We went to actually watch golf. Unfortunately many people were there to drink & be seen, I would never go on a Saturday again. They were drunk, rowdy & foul mouthed. Totally spoiled the day for us, in the end we left early.

Scottsdale can't handle that many people

by MrTarget on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

I attended the event on Saturday. There were no enough toilets, concessions, or places just to get something to drink in the desert on a hot day! Each year these planners DO NOT PLAN! Will I go next year? Yeah, I like golf. And I will complain next year too since they will do nothing to help the crowds. BUT parking was a lot better this year. Thank you.

    The Coachella of the PGA....

by DaRicker on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

If you like a party atmosphere with a little golf mixed in it, you can go to Top Golf or here at the WM Phoenix Open--wait, you can actually do both, since TG is right down the street! Have fun!

So oversold and unorganized - Don’t waste your $$$

    by MarthaWashington53578 on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

We traveled from out of town to enjoy what sounded like a fun day outdoors - watching golf, throwing a few back, and sampling some Phoenix eats. What we found was an event that was so oversold - we had to walk for over an hour to even enter the event. We thought the line was maybe just backed up from security... WRONG! It was shoulder to shoulder people from where our Lyft dropped is off until we finally found a small square of grass to sit down. Extremely long lines for food, drink, and bathroom. Not nearly enough port-a-potties, no organization of food or beer lines, not enough people selling wrist bands for booze. I understand waiting in line at big events but this was on another level. Way too many people in the space and all I kept thinking was how would we get out of there alive if something scary happened. Bottom line- wouldn’t waste my money again. Definitely need to cap ticket sales for Saturdays in the future.... it shouldn’t just be about how much money they can make - the sponsors need to consider the fan experience as well!!

Security people not trained- ruined my day

by Anonymous on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

I was not allowwd to bring in my tablet to take pictures even though it states clearly in the security section of the rules that it should have been allowed. I tried telling them this but they just did not get it. We are talking about an iPad mini, not much larger than a phone. Ruined my day. Paid full price for a ticket to the pro am day. Drove from out of town. Paid for hotel. And got no photos.

    Drunkenness

by Robertzz on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

An awesome event but there were way too many drunken spectators. On the 10th fairway the drunks were annoying but you could ignore them because of the open area. On Sunday I sat on the 16th and that was a huge mistake. I sat from 9-3 watching play but numerous college age spectators stood drinking during that same time. They were foul mouthed and several jeered the players. This was the first time that I attended the open and I will return one more year. If I witness the same drunkenness again then I will never return. But, I will never sit at 16 again

    What an event!

by KATinKY on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

This was our first trip to the WMPO and I can tell you it won't be our last. Despite the large crowds, the venue does an excellent job accommodating the masses. From the ease of entry to the large number and variety of concessions to restrooms to open first come bleacher seating. And if you are fortunate enough to find yourself on hole 16 be prepared for a one of a kind golf experience! This event is a bucket list item for any golf fan.

Waste Management was a waste of money

    by Golfergirl32 on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

As an avid golf fan, I was appalled to see the attire and etiquette of this event. On top of that waiting for a drink too 40 minutes and getting a wristband was just as bad. There needs to be more staffing and security to help aide where the holes are in this event.

Incredible Way to See the Golfers!

by KakiT on 2/6/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

We really enjoyed the WM Phoenix Open tournament. While it takes some 'getting used to' when you hear fans BOO the golfers when they make bad shots, overall, it was a great venue to see the world's top golfers. The grounds are beautiful and the food and drinks were reasonable.

The greatest people watching Show on Earth, just also happens to be a golf tournament. Despite the hundreds of thousands people in attendance the venue was extremely well organized.

    Open

by LJBJJ on 2/5/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

If you don't like crowds this probably isn't for you. Especially on Sat. with all the drunk kids. I would suggest going on any of the other days when you don't have to wait in line for everything. I don't think they have enough bathrooms or concessions, but what event does. The weather is usually marvelous and its great to be outdoors.

    World's Largest Frat Party

    by Chuckles206 on 2/5/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

If you want a college party vibe w/out the trashy downside. This is the event for you. I'm older and brought my teen durning the morning rounds, then we played golf in the afternoon. The real crazy happens later. Perfect for family days and hot nights. Everybody should do this at least one time. Great Buddy's Trip weekend. Would be very cool to co-host an LPGA event on other course at the same time. When the golf fans want a break from the madness they could watch the skill players on the other side.

    Great Event!!

    by DVGx2 on 2/5/18TPC Scottsdale - Scottsdale

Attended the Waste Management Phoenix Open (The People's Open) on Thursday and had the time of our lives. Each year is better than the one before and this year is no exception. 104,000 + people, great weather and great golf, what more is there. The tournament does a wonderful job of making the experience one of a life time. It is something that truly should be experienced if you are a sports fan. Even if golf is not your thing, the event is worth spending a day enjoying the weather and the atmosphere. Only thing that could make this better is Tiger being there, although if he were to show up not sure how they would handle the crowd! Highly recommended.

This is a must see. (I don’t even like golf.) I thoroughly enjoyed the people. Lots of volunteers. Everyone was friendly. Extremely well organized. I highly recommend it.
