Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • Ok

    by M. G. on 11/19/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

The game was good. Life long DC sports fan & native. Odd thing happened to me that's never happened before at the arena. A gentleman who seemed to be an usher, head maybe came directly to the row I was in and ask to see my ticket, no problem, part of his job duties I suppose. Odd thing was he did not show any intrest in seeing anyone else's ticket in my row until i asked, "just my ticket you want to see?". Then he nervously somewhat reluctantly checked the other few people in the row, awkward experience, especially for the price.

  • Fun evening

    by Shorty01! on 11/18/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

We were visiting the US from the UK and had never been to a basketball game before, so we thought we would give it a go. We had great fun watching the game. The hot dogs were tasty, but expensive, and the cans of beer were huge (and also expensive). Definitely a fun thing to do on a visit to DC, especially as the stadium is centrallly located in DC and was easy to walk to from our hotel at Thomas Circle.

  • Refreshments

by GG on 11/7/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

We had a good time at the game however the cost of the food was ridiculously expensive. 2 sandwiches/2 drinks/2french fries and the cost for all of was $67.00. Just too expensive to eat at the Capital One Arena.

by DJ no Disc Jockey on 10/29/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Went out with the fellas and enjoyed a nail biter. Beal hit a game winner. There was a little rowdy entertainment in the seating area too lol

  • Great time!

by Tra on 10/25/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first NBA game! I'm so happy I went on opening night. I love that we were able to enter the doors for Capital One cardholders because the other line was long and that line was so quick and we received a gift upon entering. The Wizards towels that we received were so cute! The only disappointment was the food. We ate at DC District. I got a burger that was cold (the cheese wouldn't melt) and my husband had chicken strips that didn't look like chicken at all. Lesson learned for next time.

  • Washington Wizards NBA Opening Night

by Ernesto on 10/24/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Overall, it was a great experience checking at the event site with the Ticketmaster app. Arena security personnel needs to be more communicative about event entrance guidance, and give clear instructions to patrons before the event access time which was an hour prior to it. The attitude of one of the guards was very rude and very aggressive once we open the door and asked some questions regarding correct event entrance. This happened about an hour and a half from the event starting time, and did not represented any threats or disruption at the event entrance. But besides that, we enjoyed the game and using the app was very easy to use with no hiccups.

  • No thanks

by Trudy on 4/11/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

    1. Capital One refused to accept my printed ticket. I stood in three long lines with the paper ticket that no one accepted. My cell was cracked so I had to print the ticket. 2. They would not let me in to see the game with my purse. I was told nothing about my purse being too big. Thank God I am sixty six and had to walk six blocks back to the parking spot to put my purse in the trunk. 3. The people who should have been helping me were very ruled and nasty. After putting my purse in the trunk and walking back to the Arena, I got in another line to go to the box office to get a ticket. The first thing the clerk asked for was my identification which I left at the car in my trunk.

  • Excellent

by Sandi on 4/5/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I had a great time, and my daughter and her fiancé joined me this time, so that made things better.

  • Good

by Harpreet on 4/4/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Event was really good and fun. The parking was hard to find so better Parking can make the future events fun. The parking lot next to stadium had a sign that $20 event Parking but parking meter did not collect money in advance and made everyone wait at the end that caused Hugh delay getting out of the garage.
