Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • First PRO Game with the Kids.

by Brian C on 12/30/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience, parking was close and easy, entry to the arena was pretty quick and painless. Found our seats quickly and enjoyed the pregame DJ and warm ups. Game was great, traffic was traffic, a lot more traffic after the game than before it. Had a great experience.

  • NBA at its best

by KT on 12/16/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The only down side to our trip is the control on bag sizes (yes they send you a text to inform you) you can take in so when the chap at the entrance says to my wife that bag is just (and i mean just - I wasn't convinced) to big you need to take bag around the corner to the lockers and the for the pleasure of leaving it in a locker it will cost you $14 - easy money or what. That said the rest of the evening was brilliant the entertainment was the great, the game brilliant (Clippers win)

  • Wizards vs Nets

by Lee Luv on 12/15/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My 1st NBA game in a long, long, long time! Hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed the game, the atmosphere, just being at an event after dealing with pandemic for years.

  • Went with my 20-year-old daughter for a Wizards-Nets game.

by Cheese on 12/15/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my daughter's first NBA game. She had a great time. Not only did she enjoy the basketball but really got a kick out of all the entertaintment, including the music, the dancing, the fan-cam and the competitions. There was never a dull moment. Coming from the UK, she was also impressed with how friendly the staff was. This included when we arrived for the game, when we looked for our seats, when we bought food and drink at halftime and when we left the arena and the staff thanked us for coming. A very nice experience. (The only downside was how the Wizards played and lost).

  • It's good to arrive at the car half an hour earlier

by Lin on 12/15/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The live music was not enough to excite the audience (at least I was not driven up) and there was only one appearance of the cheerleaders, so the interaction was a bit disappointing, not as perfect as expected

  • Other than the ghetto people behind me smelling like weed I

    by Luis r on 12/13/22Rating: 5 out of 5

Great time if it wasn’t for the ghetto people behind me

  • Family Experience

by G Johnson on 12/13/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We decided to attend a Wizards game as a family outing and it was an amazing experience. The game was fun for me and my sons but the energy, music, and crowd participation made it enjoyable for my wife (not a sports fan). The concession prices are higher now than I recall but overpriced stadium food is part of the experience. Overall, 10 out of 10 recommend!!!

  • So loud

by Old person I guess on 12/13/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Speakers were blaring - especially at the beginning of the game. Take it down a notch. It really takes away from the athletes.

  • More basketball, less noise

by Marc on 12/13/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoy watching the basketball but the stadium is too noisy.

  • Fake noise at NBA games

by NBA fan on 12/7/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The events crew tries a little too hard asking the audience to “GET LOUD”. Bless their hearts. The DJ blasts music that goes up to eleven. When the music pauses, though, you can tell that the crowd is barely cheering. Then the DJ has to cover up the silence with more noise. I believe the NBA should abandon this approach. You can’t keep using this Showtime/I’m So Excited model. It hasn’t worked since the early 90s. Please turn down the volume and bring new entertainment such as rappers or local dancers. The product is still good; the game is fine. Also, I believe the hosts (people on the mic) have true talent. Please just give them a new script.

  • Overall Good Experience

by Chicagoan on 12/1/22Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed. Never been to stadium before First time. Did not appear to be a “bad seat” in the stadium. Saw A-Rod enjoying the game with the Owner. Food was good. Music/Hype was a bit drab. Clean stadium.
