Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

Game was great. Dont eat verizon center hotdogs though, unless you want to spent the rest of your night on the toilet.

    Pistons @ Wizards 11/14

    by WizFan09 on 11/15/09Verizon Center - Washington

AWESOME! (other than the Wiz dropping another one) The online transaction and e-ticket were great! Absolutely no hassle getting through the turnstyles or into the "Phone Booth." The seats were excellent - very close to 200 level concessions and restrooms. I will definitely use this service again (hopefully see the Wizards win next time)!

The in-game fan experience at Wizards games is getting worse and worse. The dance routines are lame, the "games" are stale, and the refreshments are still, for the most part, disgusting and overpriced. While the on-court product has seen some improvement, I wouldn't shell out big bucks for a game.

    Awesome time

Easy to get to. GREAT game. Something different we decided to do on a Saturday night. Will most definitely (if the price is right) do this again.

    24/7 Practice for the Wizards

by Kiani on 11/15/09Verizon Center - Washington

After last nights game there should be a mandate for the Wizards to practice seven days a week. Go ahead and let them observe the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas only. My eyes used to stay directly on the court during any live game, but I found myself people watching much more than usual. Also, next time I order tickets from Ticketmaster, I will ensure that opt for "printable" tickets or "Next day delivery." I paid extra for two to three day delivery and they barely made it on time. (Nail biting situation since I was planning this as a surprise for my baby sister's birthday.

by lmgbme on 11/9/09Verizon Center - Washington

Nice afternoon with my dad who reminded me, and rightfully so, that Washington teams should be viewed with low expectations. The Wizards lived up to them! Had a great time with dad!

    Fun Game!

    by 2DLZ on 11/5/09Verizon Center - Washington

I would rate this event a "5-star" event BUT the Wizards did not win so I can only give it a 4. We enjoyed all the festivities during the game! I was finally able to grab a cannon-ball t-shirt! The food selection has gotten waaaay better! I was able to top off my chicken fingers with a donut. LOL. The seats appeared to be wider as well.....or was it the 25 pounds I just lost. Either way, the seats are roomy.

    Sorry

by Anonymous on 11/5/09Verizon Center - Washington

The Wizards game wasn't filled and yet there were people in the 400s section. Why can't the security move the people in those sections down and give them a chance at a good game. Ooops, its the Wizards.........they didn't get started to play until the 3rd quarter.

great Wizards win on Halloween-a special night!

by wizbanger on 11/3/09Verizon Center - Washington

First home game in a long time for Gilbert Arenas and he looked like he can return to All Star status again. Andre Blatch is going to be a load for other teams to handle if he 'brings it' every night like he has already this season. The Wizards also have a much deeper team this year, shown by the fact that they easily beat NJ without Antwan Jamison and Caron Butler, both of whom are of All Star caliber like Gilbert. Add in the fact that it was Halloween night with many people dressed up and it truly was one of the most enjoyable and encouraging openers the Wizards have played in a long, long time.

    Great Performance

    by 1wzfn on 11/2/09Verizon Center - Washington

The wizards were awesome!!!!!! Now the crowd was another story We had to listen to a dude give an explanation on the economic value of the seats to his wining girlfriend who complained constantly about her far away seats.Great bargain anyway but the seats could use more leg room!! Overall excellent experience
