Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

Awesome Opener for the Wiz Kids!

    by jaybee24 on 11/2/09Verizon Center - Washington

The Wizards opener vs the Nets was great. The halftime was very lame. On the big opening night there should have been a spectacular halftime show. There was free candy all night in stations around the arena hallways. What a nice treat on Halloween!

    Wizards Worked Their Magic

    by Univgirl50 on 11/2/09Verizon Center - Washington

The Wizards definitely looked good Saturday night. Although Butler and Jamison didn't play, Arenas, Blatch, Stevenson, McGhee and Miller kept the Wizards above water. As a matter of fact, every player contributed to the success of the Wizards Saturday night; however, I was very much impressed with Blatch. Can you believe he scored over 30 points? I knew Arenas would bring the heat, but Blatch surprised me by bringing some heat of his own. Keep up the good work. With a totally healthy team, there will be no stopping the Wizards. Now if something can be done about the Redskins. Ugh!!

    wizards vs. nets

by peterpeterpumpkineater on 11/2/09Verizon Center - Washington

I went to the game with some of my high school friends. The seating (thought near the top) still let us have a good view of all the game. I enjoyed seeing gilbert arenas.

    Intimate NBA for Reasonable Money

by 3rdNBAGame on 10/12/09Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center - Richmond

Wonderful to be able to provide an experience for children in a town without a professional team, for extremely reasonable cost. May the Wizards always feel at home in Richmond.

by speakdaone on 10/10/09Verizon Center - Washington

The game was unbelievable!! It is amazing how big and fast NBA players are. The seats we had gave us a true experience. While visiting DC to see family, I decide to take my son and father in law. The were very happy with the event!

    No Defense

    by jams777 on 10/10/09Verizon Center - Washington

I was unable to understand the game announcer on who scored, player introduction, etc. Fans did not know who the players are without a game roster sheet. Autria did a very good job. Glenn and Dave are who? (right before the game on the big screen)

by Guanglei on 10/10/09Verizon Center - Washington

It is the first time for me to watch NBA in the US. I had a dream to watch it ten years ago, now it comes true! Although Washington Wizards failed, the game is really exciting!

by B1GD0G on 10/8/09Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center - Richmond

This was an amazing night. The Game itself was great, but the tickets and seats were out of this world. I couldn't have imagined that the choice of seats would be that great. If the Wizards play here again I will definitly be in attendance again!!!!!!

    Wizards vs Grizzlies @ Richmond

by UnhappyFan2 on 10/7/09Alltel Pavilion at the Siegel Center - Richmond

Glad I paid only $10 for the game, I would be asking for $$$ back if I paid full price. Also, the will call service was just plain unreal....spent 20 minutes in one of three lines with a few other 100s folks. I would not use will call at this location again.
