Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • Good game

    by Jopatricia48 on 1/2/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great, but the concert wasn't that much, it felt rushed and the acoustics wasn't the best for the singers, herding everyone to that one section was crazy also. Next time if you are going to include a concert, make sure it's kids friendly, both singers Johnny Gill and Tank sings "adult" songs.

  • Wizards for the Win

This was my first NBA game in probably over 35 years. I remember them being kind of boring when I was a kid. Well my 14 year old son was interested in seeing a game so we went to the Wizards vs. the Milwaukee Bucks the day after Christmas. Well it wound up being amazing! Everyone had a great time. The game was fast-paced and close so it was exciting for the whole game. And the Wizards won. Can't beat that! I will definitely be going to more games this season.

What a great Wizards game! It was a highlight for our son's Christmas! Especially since the Wizards won. And, to top it off...Matthew Dellavedova missed 2 free throws in a row, and we all got FREE Chick-Fil-A sandwiches! Thanks Dellavedova!!!!

  • Great win for the Wizards!

    by 1basketballfan on 12/21/16Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Wizards were behind most of the game but charged ahead in the final quarter. Fantastic game. Decibel level in the arena remains the worst part of the experience.

  • Amazing

Game was amazing; everything was awesome from the venue to the entertainment on court.

  • Not children friendly

by NOTFORTHECOMMONFAN on 12/14/16Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I invested $300+ (Section 200 / Front Row / Center Court / great place to see the whole game)to take my two sons (9 and 13) to the game. After parking and concessions I was near $400 for the evening. The doors opened at 6:00 for a 7:00 tip off. We arrived right at 6:00 so the boys could go see the players up close and try to get an autograph. I cannot overstate how disappointed I was when I was told that they were not allowed into the 100 section, much less near the floor where warmups were taking place, because we had not purchased 100 level seats. Even though I advised the usher that I would not go down, I was unable to convince her that it was very, very important to the boy to try to get autographs from their favorite players. This is another example of pro sports becoming an event that wrought with exclusivity and completely absent of friendliness to the regular fan. A HUGE disappointment. Also, I emailed the Wizards the next day and have yet to hear back from them. I do not recommend attending a Wizards game or, if this is NBA policy, any NBA game. Leave it to the elites and corporate types.

  • Where are the loyal fans

    by 247truthteller on 12/1/16Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

OK so I will start by saying that my seats in section 117 were really good. I was glad to have a nice view of the game and feel involved in the action between both teams. With that being said I am not a resident of the DC area and was only visiting family for the Thanksgiving Holiday and it seemed at least half of the arena was supporting the opposing team! My section was decked out in head to toe in Black and Gray (The opposing SPURS team colors) even the little children had on SPURS Jerseys (pretty funny I might add) Being a Seattle resident for years we are very loyal to our teams even now I am sitting here waiving my 12th man flag LOL I was just a little surprised at an arena where more people cheer for the opposition than the home team. The wizards seem like a team that either doesn't practice regularly together or many team members lack confidence, often missing easy shots when they are literally right underneath the basket, missing 2nd attempts at shots when they had the opportunity to finish the play, Not able to read each other on the floor, forget about a sneak pass to the wide open player in the corner, he wouldn't catch the ball or seem to have any idea where the ball came from or why someone threw it to him. I enjoyed myself but come on Wizards, practice and work as a team! Wizards fans support your team!!!

  • Not adequate entertainment for the cost

by Anonymous on 11/29/16Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

Just moved to DC from San Antonio area and I love pro basketball but will not be back again unless the entertainment is better pre game and during the half. What an embarrassment to bring my whole family over the Thanksgiving holiday to this event, even the co host's of the basketball game were not great. The blow up mascot deflated during its dance and the rented sumo wrestlers suits for half time were not entertaining. Someone needs to visit other pro basketball stadiums and up their game for the DC area. We ate in the fine dining room upstairs and the fish taco's I ordered were cold. No wonder this eating area was not even half way filled, for the price I paid that should not have happened. Such a disappointment all around for the money we paid to go to this event! And to think my husband and I possibly were going to buy season tickets before we moved here. Glad we tried it out first! Mu husband and I were also disappointed in the music as most all other arena's have rocking D.J.'s that get the crowd into it! Mascot was also lame.

  • Good game

Had a good time watching the Wizards-Spurs game Saturday night. Seats were pretty good, and we were close to concessions and bathrooms.

I brought my boys to celebrate my son birthday, we had an awesome time. The first thing my middle son said was way to go mom on the seats.

It was the first NBA game that I attended and it was great. Great presence of the Wizard's fans against the Cavs for the Veteran's Day.

  • Fun outing, great seats

    by bill21730 on 11/16/16Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Good time at the Verizon Center. I sprung for Club Level seats as both my son and I wanted a relaxing experience. Close by the seats were concessions and restrooms with no wait at either. Seats and sight lines were very nice. Good experience!

Nice seating area close from Atlanta bench but seat itself was terrible.
