Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • Great game, venue, people are so nice!

We always have a blast at the wizards game. Every single employee is friendly and helpful. I got a coke for my son, and it was $9. For no reason, the manager told me it was free and to have a good night. Our seats, even though high up, provide a great view of the entire court. My boys got to see Curry play although KD was hurt. We cheered for our Wizards though, and they won! They beat GSW. Great venue. Parking is easy in the building, no need to even walk outside (which is great as it was raining and the state of the union was happening blocks away at the same time.) So easy to get to it from Baltimore. And we ate at Bar Louie's also right in the building.

  • Unforgettable

This event was one of the best events I've ever attended. My seat was behind courtside and came with VIP perks like food and beverage before and during the game. The game itself was amazing. The wizards and Cavaliers went into overtime twice. They were matching each other point for point.

  • Amazing King James and his MerryMen!!!!!

    by Ham88 on 2/9/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Cavaliers vs Wizards!!!!! Instant NBA Classic! I wanted to see the Cavaliers in person for the first time. I am a believer in King James23 and Kyrie Irvin! Both NBA superstars. The game was a nail biter all the way thru with back and forth buckets between the two sides! Don't get me wrong I love my hometown Wizards but I truly love the Cavaliers as well!

  • BEST GAME OF THE YEAR

    by Jls1294 on 2/9/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We may have lost the game in OT, but DC was put on the map thanks to the Wallstar, Real Deal Beal & can't forget about Ottomatic

  • Will be a great atmosphere if Wizards win

    by xrayman1 on 2/9/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Verizon Center will be a hopping place if Wizards have finally hit their stride. This game was playoff caliber as good as any in the league and with a supporting crowd as good as any in the league. However, many of the lower bowl seats were empty until the second quarter. The late comers may be a reflection of the early start time of 7PM. Might be too early for the late commuting DC crowd. Given the horrible Washington DC traffic, a later start time might have more people in their seats at the start of the game.

  • Poor customer Care

Great seats, friendly crowd, lots of crown-involved events and a great game. We were so close that we can see and even here all the action on the court. The concession stands were also very close.
