Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • Enjoyable playoff game

by Tconnort on 4/29/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyable playoff game that was close enough to be interesting. Didn't get a tshirt or anything but they were doing meals for $5 which was relatively good value.

  • Good but a hiccup

by Tatormp on 4/13/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

We initially knew that we had to have the credit card used to purchase the tickets and an ID, but thought that was to pickup tickets at will call. What it was actually needed for was to slide the card and the tickets would be printed at the gate with the taker. Our problem was the machine decided to stop working and would not allow the tickets to be reprinted, so we ended up having to get back out of line, go to the ticket window to get the tickets reprinted and then return to the line. The game was great. Though we were only a few rows from the top, the view was good. We could see the whole game without issue.

Had a great time at the Wizards game! The organizers tried their best to hype the crowd and keep ppl engaged. I wish there would have been more giveaways espec since it was "fan appreciation night."

My son and I had a fantastic time at the Miami Washington Game. The staff was super friendly and helpful! Not police-like as I have experienced elsewhere. Also, there was so much thought put into every second. Fun galore! Kudos Y'all!

  • Philippians 3:13 Let it go, look before you

    by rtjs63 on 3/12/17in portland - DundalkRating: 5 out of 5

I like the style of the wizards play lately, create dust and don't look back. the wizards are in a tight zone at this present time and no team can place a strong hold on them. the 'key' relentless scoring and defense. it looks to me that the wizards render a team in a paralyzing state late in games to secure victory. when they stop displaying those winning factors that's when the wizards let these team off the hook.' keep taking the N.B.A. by storm'.

  • Wizards were amazing !!!!

The game was wonderful. The Last minutes victory won't be forgotten

  • Wizards for the Win

    by AMF921 on 3/9/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Seems kind of silly to review the Washington Wizards game. Either you're interested in going to an NBA game or you're not. That being said I had a great time! The Wizards are doing well this year and this particular game against the Orlando Magic was really exciting. The Wizards were behind the entire game. Sometimes by as much as 15 points and then pulled it out in the final seconds to win the game by only one point. Can't beat that for excitement!

  • Awesome Wizards Game

  • Fun time but victory would have made it better!

by LennyLevy on 3/8/17Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

It was fun to see a live professional basketball game and get to root for our home team Wizards. They played well but ultimately lost a close one. Even though they have a very strong home record, they shouldn't lose at home. But we're glad we went, this was our third game this season. Oh, last season you had about 3 hard ciders, this season you only have Stella Artois Cidre, my least favorite hard cider. Next season, offer at least one more.

  • Great game, great seats

Wizards 112-Warriors 108 Best NBA game I've been to since the Bullets championship days. Atmosphere was fantastic. Sure there were a lot of fans representing the Warriors but the Wizards fans drowned them out in the end. Two teams battled back and forth in the 4th quarter. I couldn't have asked for anything better.
