Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • lame dc fans

by Bwasserman on 4/30/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

I'm not going to another wizards playoff game! The stadium was only 2/3 full at halftime. The pulsating music and gag over hyped production was forced to try to provide enough energy to get the team over the finish line. Beal/Wall did their part no body else really showed up other than Ty Lawson. DC sports fan suck. I did like the ticketmaster app and then being handed a paper copy to find our seats. Oh and the food is awful at Cap One Arena...at least the beer was cold. signed...unhappy fan!

  • The Wizards Never Fail

Listen...if you haven’t been to a Wizards game what are you waiting for. Electric atmosphere, good food and beautiful people. I’ve gone to two games since moving to the area. Parking is good for Capital One Arena and you’re going to see a team that gives you 100% effort. And the fans in the stands...LOL! Amazing commentary. Ticketmaster is the best for tickets. Hey...get up and go!

Staff is always rude and DC venues what it was called Verizon center a capital one arena Funny because it doesn’t take much to say hello thank you for coming or just being pleasant

  • This is a playoff team?

    by CasualFan1234 on 4/10/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

First, the good: even though it was a late season game against a non-playoff bound team, there were a lot of people in the arena, so that was nice. There was good energy around, as well. This was my seven-year-old's first basketball game so all that made it very nice. But, and this has nothing to do with the venue, the Wizards lost, convincingly, to the last place team in the entire league. They led for about 2 minutes throughout the game, and never by more than five points. It was pathetic. I laughed out loud when a Wizard was rejected while trying to dunk. Good luck in the playoffs, boys.

It seems as they were lack of motivation throughout the game with some players. Maybe they just getting ready for the playoff

  • Wiz Game

    by BigD10 on 4/9/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

In the 400's sections the seats are a little to high and to crapped to really enjoy the game. My son was a little disappointed.

  • JOHN WALL PLEASE COME BACK QUICK!!!

    by LilBits1 on 3/26/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was very exciting and I really wish we would have won. Me and my fiancé had awesome seat directly behind the team as always! We really miss John Wall and can’t wait for his return. I represent his jersey every time I come to a game. One of the greatest point guards in the league!

  • A fun evening

by LennyLevy on 3/21/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

My wife and I have attended several WIzards' games in the past. When we realized the season was winding down, we decided to attend a game. It was a fun evening. The highlight was the Wizards won, but the game was fun to watch, they had several on court events that kept the excitement going. The only problem was we sat on the side behind the team benches and most of the non-game events were focused more towards the other side of the court than our side. We'll be back next season.

  • Decent Event

    by MemphisMan18 on 3/16/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Capital One Arena is a decent place to see a game. Most seat have a good site lines and are decently comfortable. I was lucking enough to get an aisle which is recommended. As always, concession prices are normally high. I found the food better than most NBA arenas. The Wizards organization does a good job entertaining. The game play was decent. Good event to catch if you are visiting DC.

  • by Veesmart on 3/15/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Really great game! Wizards vs Heat. I was able to get seated quickly and enjoy the game without any chaos.

  • 50mins of action squeezed into 3hrs

    by Chadders5 on 3/9/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

As a visitor from the uk who played basketball at school I was really looking forward to seeing it played at the highest level. Finding the stadium was fine, getting my ticket took a little working out but fine. Finding my section and seat was ok. View from the seat block 400 seat b3 was high up but could see the action really well so good so far. The problem comes with the lack of atmosphere as your so high up it doesn't really transfer. The stopping and starting of the game for time outs and the long breaks after each quarter made the whole thing an experience rather than an event. The entertainment in the breaks consisted of bit of cheer leading and local charity stuff. The atmosphere improved with only five minutes of the game left so maybe it should be 10 mins each way. All in all can now say I've been to an NBA game but would pay $60 again.

  • Awesome Game
