Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • A Good Night Out in DC

    by F. on 2/6/20Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were good, the services were excellent inside the arena. Only issue came after the game, we couldn't find a suitable place to eat in the vicinity after the game. Maybe we didn't do our homework, or some of the nearby places should advertise more loudly.

  • Popcorn refills

by Popcorn Man on 1/13/20Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I attended the game on Monday, January 6, 2020. I was delighted to find out that Capital One Arena gave free refills with a purchase of popcorn. This was heaven for me. I'm a popcorn fanatic, free refills yes!!! But all was not what it seemed. Between the third and fourth quarter of the game I went to get my refill. I sat in section 112 and my original purchase of popcorn was done just outside this section. When I got to the concession stand outside section 112 they were all out popcorn and told me to walk to section 104. I walked to section 104 and they were all out of popcorn too. The staff at the concession stand told me that section 102 would have some popcorn. I walked there to find they did have popcorn but the line was about 20 people deep. To recap, I walked to three concession stands looking for a popcorn refill. When I finally found a concession stand that had popcorn it had a very long line. I politely went up to a staff member at the counter for my refill. A gentleman said they do give re-fills but I would have to wait in line. I told him this was not the information previously provided to me. I also told him my story about how far I walked. This meant nothing to him because he told me to get in line. The disappointing thing about the gentleman’s attitude was all he had to do was turn around and hand me a pre-loaded bag of popcorn that was within arm’s reach of him. It would have taken about one minute of his time. Since I was tired and hungry from walking to several stations I did not want to wait in line for a free refill of popcorn. I came to watch a basketball game not score a free popcorn refill. Again, the only reason I by-passed the line was because the nice ladies at section 112's concession stand specifically told people wanting re-fills not to get in line and to come around the line to get a refill. I spent about $500 that evening between tickets and food. The lack of customer service from one gentleman at a concession stand put a sour taste in my mouth. There was no consistency in process and bad attitudes. I would have a hard time telling my friends that an evening at Capital One Arena is great. I find myself telling this story more than any fun that I had watching the game. Here is my suggestion. Make more popcorn just before the end of the third quarter. Then people like me will not have to walk over 10 sections to get a popcorn refill. Plus, communicate to all staff what the policy so there is consistency. Popcorn Man.

    by K. J. on 1/2/20Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I was a little late, but all the staff was nice. And they noticed my birthday headband and every employee I walked by told me happy birthday. Which was super nice. I got a order of fries, they were good too. And to make it better the Wizards won.
