Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

  • Concert after game bc was a complete bust

by Cheryl on 12/6/21Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Game was fine even though the Wizards lost But the promised concert by Ludacris afterwards did not happen for me and my guest. There were not enough seats for all of the people who wanted to go to the concert first of all. Second of all, those sitting on a floor in an aisle, I still wanted to listen to the music but the sound quality was so bad that I left after the first song as Ludacris vocals were not audible

  • Great home game experience

by FP on 12/6/21Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This event was awesome, everything was really great. The only thing lacking was the audio experience. Especially during the after game concert. Besides that everything was splendid.

  • This Hardwood HAD NOT!

by Discombobulating on 12/6/21Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The Wizards gave one of their less competitive efforts this season and the game was essentially over by halftime! Most fans remained just for the postgame entertainment provided by Ludacris but that was disastrous as well, due to the malfunctioning sound system. I had surprised my Autistic son with what i thought would be a memorable night. Unfortunately it is one to forget!

Great game and atmosphere. I had a blast even though my team didn't win.

  • Awful seating

    by S on 11/25/21Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

No control over who sits where, the security are only willing to show you where to sit but do not care about who sits in the seats

  • Fun

by Tiffany on 11/10/21Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been to the Capital One Arena a few times but this time was the best. Parking was super close. I got in and got out very easy. The line was quick. I like that everyone has to wear a mask. The restrooms were clean. The bartenders at D.C. Cocktails were awesome to talk to and drinks were very good and strong for a sports arena. They informed us about the Capital One 10% discount. So that was awesome. We went to the food area and tried the cheese fries and Italian sausage. It was soooo good. It was the best Italian sausage I’ve ever had. Maybe it was because we had the munchies but it was so good I looked up the name when I got home. It’s called Logan’s Sausage Co. Man, I’m getting that shipped to my house. I’m 90 minutes away from that sausage, I gotta do what I gotta do! Anyway last but not least, the Wizards beat the Bucks. The game was awesome. Bradley Beal was looking like A.I in his prime tonight. If someone placed a bet the Wizards would win, got some awesome underdog money. It was a good game. My seats were near a fun family so it was a cool night. I’d definitely return for another event. Tip: Arrive 1 hour early, that’s why my experience was probably too damn good to be true LOL
